From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hello, welcome to your Counter Vandalism Unit Academy page! Every person I instruct will have their own page on which I will give them support and tasks for them to complete. Please make sure you have this page added to your watchlist. Your academy page has been specifically designed according to you and what you have requested instruction in - for that reason, please be as specific as possible when under my instruction, so that I know the best ways to help you (and do not be afraid to let me know if you think something isn't working). If you have any general queries about anti-vandalism (or anything else), you are more than welcome to raise them with me at User talk:Cassiopeia/CVUA/ArnabSaha.

Make sure you read through Wikipedia:Vandalism as that's the knowledge which most of the questions I ask you and tasks you do will revolve around.

How to use this page

This page will be built up over your time in the Academy, with new sections being added as you complete old ones. Each section will end with a task, written in bold type - this might just ask a question, or it might require you to go and do something. You can answer a question by typing the answer below the task; if you have to do something, you will need to provide diffs to demonstrate that you have completed the task. Some sections will have more than one task, sometimes additional tasks may be added to a section as you complete them. Please always sign your responses to tasks as you would on a talk page.

Once you graduate I will copy this page into your userspace so you have a record of your training and a reference for the future.

Twinkle Twinkle is a very useful tool when performing maintenance functions around Wikipedia. Please have a read through WP:TWINKLE.

Good faith and vandalism

[edit]

When patrolling for vandalism, you may often come across edits which are unhelpful, but not vandalism - these are good faith edits. It is important to recognise the difference between a vandalism edit and a good faith edit, especially because Twinkle gives you the option of labelling edits you revert as such. Please read WP:AGF, WP:VANDALISM and WP:NOT VANDALISM before completing the following tasks.

Please explain below the difference between a good faith edit and a vandalism edit, and how you would tell them apart.

Answer: A good faith edit is something that is done to help and the support the motive of the project. Most of the edits are AGF. Now if we see good faith but unhelpful edits, its like adding something good in the article but without any source. Or something that the contributor might think is correct, but it doesnt fulfill wikipedia policies and guidelines. I can or cant be disruptive. One example- East Bengal FC. Here the contributor added things which doesnt help the article to be a good article. Vandalsim is different from good faith. These are done to damage the motive of the project or to insult, demean any organisation, personality etc. Example- In the Bradner, Ohio article (link provided below) the user changed the name of the settlement in the infobox. Thus, adding incorrect data in the article. Other example is the East Bengal FC article only. See. Here the user changed the name, added rival club slogans, logos etc. This article saw vandlism like this multiple time. the same had happened with the rival club article. All These are vandalism.

checkYThe key here is intention. As long as a user intends to help Wikipedia, but the edits are might be disruptive, they are still considered a "good faith" editor and should be dealt with differently from a vandal. Vandalism is a deliberate attempt to harm Wikipedia. Just because an edit adds incorrect or unsourced information does not necessarily mean a user is a vandal; they key is their intention. A non constructive edit is a little different from disruptive. A disruptive edit could be adding info without source (place unsourced warning message on editor's talk page), bold phrases which not adhere to MOS:BOLD guidelines and etc. However, non-constructive would have the indication (not always though) of doing something once should not do. Looking into the editors' contribution log history is a good way to find out. Editor might edit adds incorrect or unsourced information and this does not necessarily mean a user is a vandal; the key is their "intention". Cassiopeia(talk) 05:14, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

Please find three examples of good faith but unhelpful edits, and three examples of vandalism. You don't need to revert the example you find, and I am happy for you to use previous undos in your edit history if you wish.
Good faith

Cassiopeia I have 1 doubt. In Kadambini Ganguly source was not removed. The IP user added "Kadambini started her education at Banga Mahila Vidyalaya holding the hand of Dwarkanath and his friend Kadambini's paternal brother Manmohan. While in Bhagalpur, Kadambini spoke pure Bengali. He was never seen using Bengali in any letter. Kadambini, however, did not know cooking very well. Here he learned some Bengali cooking techniques from his companions. Dwarkanath's first wife passed away when Kadambini came to this country from Bhagalpur.Dwarkanath's spoken language was Bengali. However, before coming to this country, he had mastered the common Bengali language." this part. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ArnabSaha (talkcontribs) 18:37, August 2, 2020 (UTC)
ArnabSaha, Ok I see from previous edits - it is unsourced. Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~).. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:50, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
Cassiopeia I was having internet issues, thats why i saved it immediately without signing and completing my answer. So, i was saying that the IP user added that part based on an ongoing bengali TV serial on Kadambini. So, the IP user might be correct and added in good faith, but since its unsourced, and the version also had some spelling, punctuation and issues, i reverted it. And no source was removed.
Yes, I am ready to move to the next level.❯❯❯   S A H A 09:28, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
ArnabSaha, If an editor adding unsouced content as long as it is not considered vandalism as per WP:V then it is not a vandalism act. We could remove it and place unsourced message (in Assignment 2 and 3) on the editor's talk page. If editor keep on adding unsouced content after many times receiving warning messages, then we would placed disruptive warning message and would report the editor to WP:ANI. Also editor is allowed to removed unsourced content unless especially the leave a edit summary to justify the removal. However, if an editor removed sourced content especially without justification then it is a vandalism act. If the editor stated the content is not as per source (false info) we need to check the content claimed as per source before we act. Thank you.09:40, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

Warning and reporting

[edit]

When you use Twinkle to warn a user, you have a number of options to choose from: you can select the kind of warning (for different offences), and the level of warning (from 1 to 4, for increasing severity). Knowing which warning to issue and what level is very important. Further information can be found at WP:WARN and WP:UWUL.

Please answer the following questions
(1) Why do we warn users?
  • Answer: We warn user when they involve in harming the motive of the project like disruptive editing, vandalism, personal attacks etc., so that they don't repeat the same. (Example) Here the IP user removed the dissolved date from the club article, which is disruptive, thats why I warned him.
checkY. If this edit made by the IP editor is correct info then remove the info and we place the "unsourced" template on the editor talk page but if the info is false/intentionally introduce false info then the edit is considered a vandalism edit and a vandalism warning template should be placed instead. The purpose to warn user is to "educate" the editors on constructive editing, especially those who are new to Wikipedia and to "deter" them of such actions with stronger warnings leads up to a block. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:37, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

(2) When would a 4im warning be appropriate?
  • Answer: Unlike the mutli-level warning, 4im warning is a first and last warning. Using this would be appropriate when an user is vandal, causes disruption badly, assuming bad faith etc. (basically, the negative things to impact the motive of the project), also with a bad past-record.
checkY. 4im is only for widespread and particularly egregious vandalism and for use lower warning for less egregious vandalism. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:37, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

(3) Should you substitute a template when you place it on a user talk page, and how do you do it?
  • Answer: Yes, warning templates always needs to be substituted to make it standalone, so that it doesnt get changed or updated, when the source/main template code is changed. Templates can be substituted using {{subst:xyz template}} code. Also, I generally use twinkle for warnings (except when I use huggle).
checkY. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:37, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

(4) What should you do if a user who has received a level 4 or 4im warning vandalises again?
checkY. Or we could manually report it at AIV. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:37, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

(5) Please give examples and please do the substitution (using {{Tlsubst|''name of template''}}) of three different warnings with three different levels (not different levels of the same warning and excluding the test edit warning levels referred to below), that you might need to use while recent changes patrolling and explain what they are used for.

Information icon Hello, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that you recently added commentary to an article. While Wikipedia welcomes editors' opinions on an article and how it could be changed, these comments are more appropriate for the article's accompanying talk page. If you post your comments there, other editors working on the same article will notice and respond to them, and your comments will not disrupt the flow of the article. However, keep in mind that even on the talk page of an article, you should limit your discussion to improving the article. Article talk pages are not the place to discuss opinions of the subject of articles, nor are such pages a forum. Thank you.

Information icon Please refrain from making unconstructive edits to Wikipedia. Your edits appear to constitute vandalism and have been reverted. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Repeated vandalism may result in the loss of editing privileges. Thank you.

Tools

[edit]

Wikipedia:Recent changes patrol#Tools includes a list of tools and resources for those who want to fight vandalism with a more systematic and efficient approach.

What you have been doing so far is named the old school approach. As well as manually going through Special:RecentChanges, it includes undos, "last clean version" restores, and manually warning users.

There are a large number of tool which assist users in the fight against vandalism. They range from tools which help filter and detect vandalism to tools which will revert, warn and report users.

Twinkle

[edit]

Twinkle, as you know, is very useful. It provides three types of rollback functions (vandalism, normal and AGF) as well as an easy previous version restore function (for when there are a number of different editors vandalising in a row). Other functions include a full library of speedy deletion functions, and user warnings. It also has a function to propose and nominate pages for deletion, to request page protection to report users to WP:AIV, WP:UAA, WP:SPI, and other administrative noticeboards.

User creation log

[edit]

In my early days of fighting vandalism on Wikipedia, one of the strategies I would use to find vandalism was to patrol the account creation log. This is located at Special:Log/newusers, and it logs every time a new user account is created on Wikipedia. You'll notice that new accounts with no contributions so far will have a red "contribs" links, whereas new accounts with some contributions will have blue "contribs" links. One great way not only to find vandalism, but welcome new users to Wikipedia is to check the blue contribs links that come in.

Rollback

[edit]

See rollback, this user right introduces an easy rollback button (which with one click reverts an editor's contributions). I'll let you know when I think you're ready to apply for the rollback user right.

Huggle

[edit]

Huggle is also an application you download to your computer which presents you diffs (orders them on the likelihood of being unconstructive edits and on the editor's recent history) from users not on its whitelist. It allows you to revert vandalism, warn and reports users in one click. The rollback permission is required to use Huggle.

Make sure you keep in mind that some edits that seem like vandalism can be test edits. This happens when a new user is experimenting and makes accidental unconstructive edits. Generally, these should be treated with good faith, especially if it is their first time, and warned gently. The following templates are used for test edits: {{subst:uw-test1}}, {{subst:uw-test2}} and {{subst:uw-test3}}.

I just wanted to make sure you know about Special:RecentChanges, if you use the diff link in a different window or tab you can check a number of revisions much more easily. If you enable Hovercards in the Hover section of your preferences, you can view the diff by just hovering over it. Alternately, you can press control-F or command-F and search for "tag:". some edits get tagged for possible vandalism or section blanking.

Find and revert some vandalism. Warn each user appropriately, using the correct kind of warning and level. Please include at least two test edits and at least two appropriate reports to AIV. For each revert and warning please fill in a line on the table below
# Type Diff of your revert Your comment - If you report to AIV please include the diff CASS' Comment
Example 1 Vandalism ( report to AIV) [1] Already had up to level 4 warnings today on this article from other users, so straight to AIV My report to AIV Thankfully they were very rapidly blocked by the admin [2] Later, the admin hid the edits made by this editor - see User Contributions so my diff in 3rd column no longer works unfortunately - see also admins deletion log [3]
Example 2 WP:NPOV [4] Added their own opinion "...well known for causing trouble" about a protest group, this editor already had level 1 NPOV warning today, so I gave a level 2 {{subst:uw-npov2}}.
1 Test edit Civil Services Examination (India) Nothing more to say, its clearly an editing test. Warned IP with editingtest1. User talk:2409:4043:2C82:B9DD:C66E:1380:5D11:93E1 checkY. Good. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:40, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
2 Test edit UEFA Team of the Year The IP did some test in the table. Reverted and warned editingtest1 User talk:120.29.113.187 ☒N. This is the fourth edit the editor made - seehere-1. If you see the 3rd edit here-2, the editor show their know how to edit as well as they placed a summary edit which clearly their fourth edit is not "to test" if they can actually make an edit in Wikipedia. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:40, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
3 Vandalism ( report to AIV) Indian Ordnance Factories Service See #7 for more details. After the warning, checked IP contributions and found did the same with many other articles. the IP did this multiple times and it seems like the IP is associated with the website. So, reported to AIV. User talk:122.173.23.195 checkY. Well-done. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:40, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
4 Vandalism ( report to AIV) East Bengal F.C. See #12. Still violated MOS:IS . So, had no other option than reporting to AIV. The user doesn't seem to listen. Here is the report diff. ☒N violation of MOS is not a vandalism. report was not successful. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:40, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
5 WP:NPOV Kolkata Derby The 2 clubs merged into one. But one of the club's fans can digest the fact and trying to show/prove it as an investment. So, its npov and addition of false info. Also gave npov1 warning here User talk:2409:4061:2082:7115:8BEF:307A:2EAE:458 ☒N I would take it either as unsourced or vandalism (false info). Cassiopeia(talk) 08:40, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
6 WP:NPOV Sealdah The IP added comments which seems like just blaming the concerned authorities for removal of tracks and bad planning. added npov1 warning User talk:2409:4060:316:779a:912f:4926:b57a:119a checkY. Cassiopeia(talk) 02:25, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
7 WP:SPAM Civil Services Examination (India) Added promotional links in the article. And other articles also. Indian Engineering Services. Thus gave advert level 1 and spam level 2 checkY. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:40, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
8 Talking on the article Alive (2020 film) Adding own opinion/movie review in the article, so undid the edit. Warned using huggle. User talk:2001:48F8:3004:7B4:708D:C517:1744:83B2 checkY. Cassiopeia(talk) 02:25, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
9 Unsourced Indian Super League Another club is supposed to join the league, but it's not official yet. So, reverted it and warned the user with unsourced1. User talk:TabahiKaBhagwan checkY. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:40, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
10 Factual error ATK (football club) Intentionally adding wrong stuff, and vandalising. The club has been dissolved, still changing the verbs to present tense. gave a level 2 warning. User talk:112.79.118.39 checkY. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:40, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
11 Blanking WP:TRANS Repeated blanking of pages. Already got 2 warnings, still did the same. So, gave 4im warning. User talk:173.176.9.151 checkY. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:40, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
12 Manual of style East Bengal F.C. Added things not as per MoS and going against GA criteria. The article is a GAN. Warned him last month, then personally attacked me, so got blocked. Added same mistake things, so gave final warning. User talk:Coderdaddy1369 checkY. Pls provide the hist diff of the personal attack as state above. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:40, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
13 COPYVIO President of South Africa Blatant copyvio done by the user. Copy-pasted the constitution of the country. Reverted the pending edits and requested for revdel. Also warned the user. User talk:2409:4052:221A:5426:0:0:93B:40B1 (Me, Blablubbs and Chlod were chatting in Wikipedia:Discord when this happened. So, actions were taken individually, but it was a collective thing) I am somewhat perplex. I would not see the edit since it was revel and your copyvio message was removed by Blablubbs - see here stating warning the wrong user. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:40, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
14 Vandalism ATK (football club) Intentional vandalism by IPs. User talk:2409:4060:415:324B:E163:C5D6:D34B:C15E. Gave a IP welcome + warning. checkY I didnt see a warning. In most cases, if the vandalism is severe, we don place welcome message. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:40, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
15 Vandalism Amazon Prime IP only for vandalism. reached max warning thus automatically reported via huggle. I also clicked revert, and another user did at the same time. report diff checkY.

hi Cassiopeia. i want to add one more thing. all the wikimedia websites are down for last few days in India, no idea why. which is affecting my overall contribution. see this map. cant even use huggle. the issue doesnt seem to solve. ❯❯❯   S A H A 16:01, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
ArnabSaha Thank you for informing. No Worries. I could access Wikipedia and Huggle early this week but I could not access many other websites for 4 days as well. And all of the sudden, the issues solved themselves. When you have finished your assignment, then ping me. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 06:24, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

Hello Cassiopeia. I have almost completed the assignment, but still two left. Is it possible to carry it forward to the next assignment? Things aren't going right since then. Still have the same issues. Couldn't use huggle. I did the assignment mainly through pending changes. ❯❯❯   S A H A 05:45, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

ArnabSaha, See review above and notes below. I like the fact that you look into different type of warning in your answers for you may learn most instead just stick to the one you familiar. I know that NPOV and talking in the article is particular hard to find, so when you find them, pls place your answer in the table and ping me.
Cassiopeia Thanks. Some points- 2) yeah, i should have checked the contributions. I saw that in pending changes, and just reverted and warned.
5) These things are happening since January and since I contribute in the Indian football articles mainly, i have seen this from the beginning. A lot of meats, socks, vandals related to this.
13) In this, we both mistakenly reported another IP, as the 2 IPs were very similar. ❯❯❯   S A H A 16:03, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

Notes (1) Test edit means "the editor trying to make an edit to make sure they could actually make an edit in Wikipedia. However, since this is the editor first edit, we could place test edit message to educate and lead the editor to their sandbox to practice their edits. Sometimes an editor makes a test edit, say remove or adding an alphabet to a word in the page, or putting "hi/hello" on the page on their first edit and then revert their own edit on their second edit - see example for self revert test edit - here user self revert their edit after testing on the first edit. (2) If an editor remove unsourced content, leave it and do nothing as content should support by source(s) - see WP:PROVEIT. (3) Even thought vandalism message and tool in English Wikipedia is considered a "flexible system" where we would place the level as we see vandal fighters see fix, for vandal that is not that serious and not prolific, we still use level 1 first and increase the level on subsequent vandal edit of the same nature. Some admin will not block editors if warning messages are not enough.

Shared IP tagging

[edit]

There are a number of IP user talk page templates which show helpful information to IP users and those wishing to warn or block them. There is a list of these templates

  • {{Shared IP}} - For general shared IP addresses.
  • {{ISP}} - A modified version specifically for use with ISP organizations.
  • {{Shared IP edu}} - A modified version specifically for use with educational institutions.
  • {{Shared IP gov}} - A modified version specifically for use with government agencies.
  • {{Shared IP corp}} - A modified version specifically for use with businesses.
  • {{Shared IP address (public)}} - A modified version specifically for use with public terminals such as in libraries, etc.
  • {{Mobile IP}} - A modified version specifically for use with a mobile device's IP.
  • {{Dynamic IP}} - A modified version specifically for use with dynamic IPs.
  • {{Static IP}} - A modified version specifically for use with static IPs which may be used by more than one person.

Each of these templates take two parameters, one is the organisation to which the IP address is registered (which can be found out using the links at the bottom of the IP's contribution page. The other is for the host name (which is optional) and can also be found out from the links at the bottom of the IP's contribution page.

Also, given that different people use the IP address, older messages are sometimes refused so as to not confuse the current user of the IP. Generally any messages for the last one-two months are removed, collapsed, or archived. The templates available for this include:

NOTE: All of the templates in this section are not substituted (so don't use "subst:").

Hi ArnabSaha, Posted Assignment 4 above. No exercises for this assignment but only some reading material. Once you have done reading, pls let me know so I would post Assignment 5 for you. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia(talk) 08:41, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

Dealing with difficult users

[edit]

Harassment and trolling

[edit]
Occasionally, some vandals will not appreciate your good work and try to harass or troll you. In these situations, you must remain calm and ignore them. If they engage in harassment or personal attacks, you should not engage with them and leave a note at WP:ANI. If they vandalise your user page or user talk page, simply remove the vandalism without interacting with them. Please read WP:DENY.
Why do we deny recognition to trolls and vandals?

Answer: We deny recognition to trolls and vandals because it acts like food for them. I have seen people posting screenshots after vandalising wikipedia in FB groups (Indian football related) and others join after that. That screenshot acted as food. So, we should cut the food supply.

checkY The main point/goal of the trolls is that they want attention We dont feed them and dont get mad by denying them the recognition that they seek is critical to countering them ( (as you termed it "the food" which if we dont "feed" them then we dont give them the attention they want). How can you tell between a good faith user asking why you reverted their edit, and a troll trying to harass you?

Answer: A user asking questions AGF, ask politely, without any rage, maintain civility. Eg- User talk:ArnabSaha/Archive 10#I want to know the reason for deleting my edits. here the user wasn't aware of the MOS:IS thing, so he asked me. Even when I was new, I was unaware of this thing, and did the same thing. This is AGF user. Whereas the other guy would mainly ask in a bad manner, as if I have committed a sin. Start with personal attacks. Eg- User talk:ArnabSaha/Archive 9#Message from 83.131.67.91 here the IP was a vandal (later range-blocked). The guy with other IPs used to vandalise Indian football related articles and whenever something happened against his supported club, called the contributor "monster", "ban him" etc.

checkY. First of all, this hist diff User talk:ArnabSaha/Archive 9#Message from 83.131.67.91 you provided, didnt give me the info I need to review what you trying to info me, use this type of hist diff instead - see here-1 instead and provide here-2 and here-3 hist diffs to support your claim " called the contributor "monster", "ban him"". As for your answer, do note sometimes good faith editor do get upset when we reverted their edit and place a warning message and convey their message which might not be pleasant for your standard. Many times troll might not use personal attacks but being rude, condescending, put down, name calling and etc. To check on the editors past edits/talk page would help and it is important; however, the bottom line is that trolls want to annoy you and good faith editors annoyed at you and that is the subtle different. Emergencies

[edit]

I hope this never happens, but as you participate in counter-vandalism on Wikipedia, it is possible that you may come across a threat of physical harm. In the past, we have had vandals submit death threats in Wikipedia articles, as well as possible suicide notes. The problem is, Wikipedia editors don't have the proper training to evaluate whether these threats are credible in most cases.

Fortunately, there's a guideline for cases like this. Please read Wikipedia:Responding to threats of harm carefully and respond to the questions below.

Who should you contact when you encounter a threat of harm on Wikipedia? What details should you include in your message?

Answer: I should do these:

  1. Never ignoring them
  2. Emailing to Wikimedia Foundation
  3. After email, contacting admins via email, IRC. Also we have WP:Discord, which can also be used.

I should include the page link or diff link.

checkY. All threats are to be notified by email to emergency@wikimedia.org or if email is enables in your user account simply click on Special:EmailUser/Emergency. Cassiopeia(talk) 04:01, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

What should you do if an edit looks like a threat of harm, but you suspect it may just be an empty threat (i.e. someone joking around)?

Answer: Still notify the Wikimedia foundation, as they will evaluate the level of threat.

checkY. Send email to emergency@wikimedia.org. Cassiopeia(talk) 04:01, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

Protection and speedy deletion

[edit]

Protecting and deleting pages are two additional measures that can be used to prevent and deal with vandalism. Only an administrator can protect or delete pages; however, anyone can nominate a page for deletion or request protection. If you have Twinkle installed, you can use the Twinkle menu to request page protection or speedy deletion (the RPP or CSD options).

Protection

[edit]

Please read the protection policy.

1. In what circumstances should a page be semi-protected?

Answer: When any page is being vandalised/disrupted mainly by IPs and newly registered users (not autoconfirmed).

checkY}. Cassiopeia(talk) 02:24, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

2. In what circumstances should a page be pending changes level 1 protected?

Answer: When there's high vandalism/disruption rate, that can't be handled by PC reviewers.

checkY. The key is low volumn but persistent over time. Cassiopeia(talk) 02:24, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

3. In what circumstances should a page be fully protected?

Answer: Whenever no other protection levels work, or there's huge content dispute/conflicts among editors the page is fully protected, to help settle the issues. It acts as page stabiliser. During this time, only admins can edit the page.

checkY. However, full protection is rare. Cassiopeia(talk) 02:24, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

4. In what circumstances should a page be creation protected ("salted")?

Answer: Suppose a topic isn't notable enough to have a Wikipedia article. But, the people involved with it, constantly keep creating the article even after deletion and warnings. Then the page is salted to prevent further creation.

checkY. Cassiopeia(talk) 02:24, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

5. In what circumstances should a talk page be semi-protected?

Answer: Incase there's high vandalism/disruption rate in a talkpage. Suppose there's a critical discussion going on regarding a topic in the talkpage. And some users or a group intentionally disrupt it and influence people against or for it. All the time its not possible to block them and we don't know, who will come next. So, in those cases, talkpages should be protected

checkY. Cassiopeia(talk) 02:24, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

6. Correctly request the protection of three page (pending, semi or full); post the diff of your request (from WP:RPP) below.

Answer i: Mohun Bagan A.C.

ArnabSaha I dont see the protection tag on March 31 or April 1, 2021 nor the one on April 5, 2021 - see here. It is important not to editing waring - see WP:EW and WP:3rr for you will be blocked. Any content dispute, pls invite the invovled editor(s) to the talk page and discuss civilly and seek an agreement resolution. Pls answer the question again and pls provide "recent edit"

Speedy deletion

[edit]

Please read WP:CSD.

1. In what circumstances should a page be speedy deleted, very briefly no need to go through the criteria? Answer: a page be speedy deleted whenever its the extreme case like huge COPYVIO, clear promotion/advertisement of a company or person, blank and pointless articles etc. The articles, which don't have any basic encyclopedic value and thus don't require any discussion/consensus for the next step (deletion).

ArnabSaha you need to go through all the CSD and pls write the answers in your own words as always. Cassiopeia(talk) 02:24, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
Answer again:

2. Correctly tag four pages for speedy deletion (1 promo, 1 copyvio and 2 can be for any of the criteria) and post the diff and the criteria you requested it be deleted under below. For COPYVIO pls check the text vs the source by using Earwig Copy detector. Please provide reasons of your nominations.

Answer i: आईएफए शील्ड it was tagged only A3 previously, and I added A2 as its a foreign language.

ArnabSaha, Good to know you started to continue the program again. Pls see the comments above. You need to "ready undertand WP:CSD, WP:COPYVIO and WP:RPP guidelines well and how to apply them. Besides counter vandalism, the above 3 topics are very important part of this program. Pls see below notes for more information.
Cassiopeia Can drafts be tagged for CSD?  Saha ❯❯❯ Stay safe  07:48, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
ArnabSaha, CSD G (G1 to G13) actorly can be applied to draft space but please "only" nominate G11 and G12 for this program. However, CSD A category can "NOT" be apply in draft page. Do spend some time to read [[WP:CSD], WP:COPYVIO, WP:RPP and the notes below prior nomination. Cassiopeia(talk) 07:59, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

Notes:

A7 & A9 - WP:Credible claim of significance - If the subject content do have such claim, then it is not a A7 even the article at the stage is not notable. Choose other method. (1) after a WP:BEFORE and found no independent reliable sources to support the notability requirements, then nominated for WP:AFD, or R2 to draft space if no sources are provided. If it is a WP:BLP without source, then WP:BLPPROD or R2. There are other alternatives which we will discuss on the next assignment.

G11 (promo) - What constitute a G11? At times it is hard to define. Although if a article is blatantly promote or adversities about the subject then it is a G11. Sometimes, the it is a little subtle and that would be a judgement call. As a rule of thumb, if article about an entertainers (actor/singer/DJ/artist and etc) in dept of how hard they work, how motivated they are, using all the puffery/flowery languages and especially the subject does not meet notability guidelines. For a corporation, we would see they list down all they product/services, their directors/key person in the company, they mission, their client, they are the influencer in their industrial, all the words/phrased to enhance/market the company and no substantial info that is supported by independent reliable sources.

G12 (copyvio) -

Copyright violation addresses the use of original expression without permission of the holder which is a violation of laws even the credit is given to the source. For articles, the Copyright Law gives the copyright protection to the “original works of authorship fixed in in a tangible medium of expression” in the newspaper, magazine and freelance article at the moment of their creation, for the life of the creator plus 70 years after, and 95 years for corporation publication or 120 years from date of creation, whichever is shorter.

A “fact” is not considered an original work of authorship; but how the ways facts are recorded where the style of the writing, choice and/or arrangement of words are copyrightable. An infringement of copyright is committed when a person uses the “exact words /almost exact words in a consecutive manner” of the author/holder. To note, as a guideline, a few words copies from the original works and an idea of expression such as "weather the storm", 'crossing the Rubicon" "as dead as a doornail" and etc. proper nouns, document/event/treaty/person/title/ names are generally acceptable and so is a direct quote of speech. However, any longer phrases which would be expression in a number of ways are copyright protected. To use one of two short sentences on a large article generally is ok but it will considered infringement if the edit entry is consists of big percentage of the original work and yet for some (such as newspaper/press/journalism that takes their work very seriously - anything more than 4 exact consecutively words would considered copyvio). To avoid copyright infringement, one needs uses his/her own words to convey the source’s information. Paraphrasing could minimise the the copyright violation; however, "threshold" ultimately, court judgement would determined the if copyright violation has been made.

Copyvio for texts or images shared the same notion that it is not a copyvio if the verbatim texts or images are taken from free licence and Public domain sites/specific page/image. Always check the "original source" even if in WikiCommon the editor who upload the image claim taken from a PD site, we need to check the link provided and if the site indicate the image taken from another source, then we check the source. For texts, we need to check the sites if it is a PD, sometimes the disclaimer of PD is not on the page, but on the home page or "about" page or FAQ page. Secondly, for older article (no in NPP Feed), any copyvio texts found, we will revdel it as it is almost always it is not the first versions. If a small amount of verbatim texts found in NPP Feed articles, we would revdel them; but large amount of verbatim texts we will tag G12.

Please read WP:COPYVIO and WP:G12 from Special:NewPagesFeed (New Page Patrol or Article for Creation section). You can use Earwig's Copyvio Detector tool to check if an article is in violation of COPYVIO.

Lastly, here are a few examples where the German car maker Audi was sued for copyright breach.

1. Audi infringed copyright violation over Eminem’s song “Lose Yourself” in their commercial advertising. [5]

2. Audi was fined US $ 965,000 over copyright infringement for using 10 words from Brian Andreas’s story of “Angel of Mercy” - [6]

I think I just had a wake-up call, and it was disguised as a car, and it was screaming at me not to get too comfortable and fall asleep and miss my life. (Audi commercial) Some people don’t know that there are angels whose only job is to make sure you don’t get too comfortable & fall asleep & miss your life.(Brian Andreas’ print)
