CVUA

[edit]

Hello, welcome to your Counter Vandalism Unit Academy page! Every person I instruct will have their own page on which I will give them support and tasks for them to complete. Please make sure you have this page added to your watchlist. Your academy page has been specifically designed according to you and what you have requested instruction in - for that reason, please be as specific as possible when under my instruction, so that I know the best ways to help you (and do not be afraid to let me know if you think something isn't working). If you have any general queries about anti-vandalism (or anything else), you are more than welcome to raise them with me at User talk:Cassiopeia/CVUA/Karnataka.

Make sure you read through Wikipedia:Vandalism as that's the knowledge which most of the questions I ask you and tasks you do will revolve around.

How to use this page

This page will be built up over your time in the Academy, with new sections being added as you complete old ones. Each section will end with a task, written in bold type - this might just ask a question, or it might require you to go and do something. You can answer a question by typing the answer below the task; if you have to do something, you will need to provide diffs to demonstrate that you have completed the task. Some sections will have more than one task, sometimes additional tasks may be added to a section as you complete them. Please always sign your responses to tasks as you would on a talk page.

Once you graduate I will copy this page into your userspace so you have a record of your training and a reference for the future.

Twinkle Twinkle is a very useful tool when performing maintenance functions around Wikipedia. Please have a read through WP:TWINKLE.

Enable Twinkle (if haven't already) and leave a note here to let me know that you have enabled it.

Good faith and vandalism

[edit]

When patrolling for vandalism, you may often come across edits which are unhelpful, but not vandalism - these are good faith edits. It is important to recognise the difference between a vandalism edit and a good faith edit, especially because Twinkle gives you the option of labelling edits you revert as such. Please read WP:AGF and WP:NOT VANDALISM before completing the following tasks.

Please explain below the difference between a good faith edit and a vandalism edit, and how you would tell them apart.

Answer: A good faith edit is an edit with the intent to improve the encyclopedia for example adding information to a template infobox. However sometimes a user may not have used the correct name for the information which resulted in breaking the template - this is still a good faith edit because the intent was to improve the encyclopedia. A vandalism edit is however an attempt to vandalise the encyclopedia, for example deliberately adding obviously incorrect information to mislead readers. Karnataka talk 19:15, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

checkY A good faith edit is the one made when the user is not aware that they are doing wrong. These edits are generally performed by newcomers who do not fully understand Wikipedia's culture and guidelines and hence end up making unconstructive and unhelpful edits. However, the intention towards a good faith edits is never towards malice. For instance, if a user adds an improperly cited information to an article, that can be construed to be made in good faith. On the contrary, vandalism edits are a result of deliberate and malicious attempt towards damaging Wikipedia. For example, adding offensive content to articles, or blanking pages could be treated as vandalism. If we are not sure about the edit nature, We can also look their contribution log and the editor talk page to see if there is a pattern of vandalism in the past to determine the recent edits. To differentiate the good faith and vandalism edit is the "intention" of the editor. If an editor intends to help Wikipedia, and the edit is considered disruptive, they are still considered a "good faith" editor especially the new editor does not aware their edits are disruptive. Vandalism is a "deliberate attempt" to harm Wikipedia. Editor might edit adds incorrect or unsourced information and this does not necessarily mean a user is a vandal; the key is their "intention"

(Note 1: If unsourced edits and disruptive are not vandalism edits. we could place a warning unsourced and disruptive messages on the editor talk page respectively; However, if the editor continued adding unsourced / disruptive edits many times after received many warning messages, the editor could be reported and a short term blocking from edit might be deemed appropriate as per admin see fit). Warning and reporting

[edit]

When you use Twinkle to warn a user, you have a number of options to choose from: you can select the kind of warning (for different offences), and the level of warning (from 1 to 4, for increasing severity). Knowing which warning to issue and what level is very important. Further information can be found at WP:WARN and WP:UWUL.

Please answer the following questions
(1) Why do we warn users?
  • Answer: To ensure that an editor knows that a recent edit in their contributions is not necessarily helpful to Wikipedia, and so that they are aware of this and have an opportunity to improve their edits to stop them from making more disruptive edits. Warnings also include links to guidelines and policies where users can learn about editing and use these as a guide to help them as well. When I revert an edit by a user, I can see through warnings very quickly if other users have reverted edits by the editor, and use this to warn them with a different level. Karnataka talk 09:29, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
checkY. The purpose is to "educate" the editors on constructive editing, especially those who are new to Wikipedia and to "deter" them of such actions with stronger warnings leads up to a block. (Note: if unsure of the edit intention, always check the user contribution log and talk page to see if there is a pattern of vandalism edits to determine the editor's intention and edit behavior. Unsourced is not a vandalism edit but we can report ethe user if they repeatedly adding unsourced or disruptive edits after many warnings which would lead the user to be banned from editing.) Cassiopeia talk 23:51, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

(2) When would a 4im warning be appropriate?
  • Answer: For major, very quick vandalism edits or edits with issues where it would be impractical to give four chances to improve their editing. 4im is designed to state that the user should immediately stop what they are doing. Karnataka talk 09:36, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
checkY.A 4im warning is the most serious of all warnings and is appropriate in cases of gross, extreme, excessive or persistent vandalism from an editor. It is the first and the only warning the user will receive, ignoring which could lead to a block. It can also be used in cases of blatant vandalism, for instance when some offensive abuse is added to a BLP. Cassiopeia talk 23:51, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

(3) Should you substitute a template when you place it on a user talk page, and how do you do it?
  • Answer: Yes, by adding subst: after the first two curly brackets but before the first letter. In this {{()Template}}, I have marked where you would add subst: with two brackets. Karnataka talk 09:29, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
checkY. The reason to do so is the template is always substituted so that even if the template changes, the display of the page on which template was substituted will not change. Cassiopeia talk 23:51, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

(4) What should you do if a user who has received a level 4 or 4im warning vandalises again?
checkY. Cassiopeia talk 23:51, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

(5) Please give examples and please do the substitution (using {{subst|''name of template''}}) of three different warnings with three different levels (not different levels of the same warning and excluding the test edit warning levels referred to below), that you might need to use while recent changes patrolling and explain what they are used for.

Karnataka, see comments above. Pls note that I made a mistake on Q5. Instead of {{Tlsubst|''name of template''}}), it should be {{subst|''name of template''}}) - no "Tl" for such the template message can be read. I have added the correct templates on my review of your questions. You can add the article name by adding "|" after the "name of the template". See example below - article name is Ciryl Gane:
