Description

Historical information

The sculpture was given to the Institute by the artist in appreciation for the work of Albert Einstein, who served on the Institute's Faculty from 1933 until his death in 1955. It was formally unveiled in its site next to the Institute pond at an event on November 14, 1981, at which art historian Dore Ashton gave a lecture titled "Sculpture on the Edge of Dreams." (The title comes from a quote by Smith included in the lecture.) The lecture was published by the Institute in 1982 in a pamphlet of the same name that included photographs of the piece by Clem Fiori and introductory remarks by then-Institute Director Harry Woolf.
