Shantou Yuhuai Senior High School(汕头市聿怀中学 Pinyin:Yuhuai Zhongxue) was founded in 1877, and it moved to the site(Waima Road of Shantou, No.291). It has more than 130 years of history so far, which is one of the oldest school in Shantou. The school once named as No.3 Senior High School and Dongfanghong Senior High School.^[1]

Basic Introduction

Shantou Yuhuai Senior High School is one of the national demonstration senior high schools in Guangdong, and it is also one of the Provincial level key secondary schools. The school has two campuses, 60 teaching classes, more than 210 teachers and more than 3600 students.^[2]

The History

Before the Founding of the PRC

In 1877, British missionary John Campbell built a school building, which could accommodate dozens of students. This was the predecessor of Yu Huai middle school.

In 1913, they chose another place in Shantou to build a new school building, the building could accommodate about sixty students.

In 1925, Yuhuai Senior High School was closed for some reasons.

In 1929, Yuhuai Senior High School opened, and appointed Chen Zelin as president.

In 1947, Chen Zelin went to America, and Zhuo Xiaoliang was the acting president. After a summer of hard work, the number of students was one thousand and one hundred, and the number of teachers was about sixty.^[2]

After the Founding of the PRC

In 1953, Yuhuai Senior High School was changed its name to Shantou No.3 Senior High School.

In 1985, the school held an important meeting, and the people all agreed to resume the name” Yuhuai Senior High School”. From then on, Yuhuai Senior High School opened a new page of its history.^[2]

The Scale of School

The school’s layout is reasonable, and the facility is complete. It has a large digital library with more than one hundred thousand books. It also has a 200-meter ring plastic runway, an indoor sports room, a swimming pool, and a stastandardized counseling room. All classrooms are equipped with multimedia computer network platform, which is composed of multimedia computer, network access equipment, LCD projector, physical projection, etc.^[2]

The International Department of School

The International Department of Shantou Yuhuai Senior High School was founded in 2013, and it is located in Dayang Campus of Shantou Yuhuai Senior High School. It is the first senior high school International Department in the eastern of Guangdong.^[3]

The Outstanding Alumni

Shantou Yuhuai Senior High School enjoys “one school, five academicians” in the eastern of Guangdong.^[4]

Huang Xuhua（黄旭华）

Huang Xuhua, borned in March 1926, Jieyang, Guangdong. He is a famous expert of ship, the father of Chinese nuclear submarine. Huang Xuhua graduated in Shantou Yuhuai Senior High School in 1945, and graduated in Shipbuilding Department of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He was selected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering in 1994. In 2013, he was one of the "2013 moved Chinese characters".

Rao Fangquan（饶芳权）

Rao Fangquan, borned in September 1934, Dabu County, Guangdong. He is an academician in Chinese Academy of engineering, electrical engineering experts, and a power generation equipment manufacturing expert. Rao Fangquan graduated in Shantou Yuhuai Senior High School in 1948, and graduated in Harbin Institute of Technology in 1958. In 1995, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering.

Zhou Fulin（周福霖）

Zhou Fulin, borned in 1939, Chaoyang, Guangdong. He is one of the pioneers of China's structural damping and vibration control field. He graduated in Shantou Yuhuai Senior High School in 1958. In 2003, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering.

Zheng Du（郑度）

Zheng Du, borned in 1936, Jiexi County, Guangdong. He is one of the academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He graduated in Shantou Yuhuai Senior High School in 1954. Zhengdu was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of sciences.

Guo Yuyuan（郭予元）

Guo Yuyuan, borned in 1933, Shanghai. He is a researcher, a doctoral tutor, a Chinese Academy of engineering, and a famous pest control expert.
