TVP Wilno – Polish-language channel of Telewizja Polska addressed to Poles living in Lithuania and Lithuanians interested in Poland. The official launch of the channel took place on September 17, 2019. The station's programs can be viewed throughout the Republic of Lithuania and on the Internet.

The tasks of TVP Wilno include performing an information and educational function among Poles in Lithuania, strengthening friendly relations between the Republic of Poland and the Republic of Lithuania, cultivating the Polish language, promoting Polish culture, integrating and activating the local community, presenting the Polish point of view on events in Lithuania, Poland and world and documenting the history and life of contemporary Poles living in the Vilnius region. The station's information activities constitute a counterweight to the efforts of the Russian media, which have been trying to maintain their influence in the Baltic countries for years. The station's activities are financed by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The station also cooperates with other Polish local media: Radio "Znad Wilii", Wilnoteka and Kurier Wileński.

History[edit]

The idea of ​​creating a Polish channel in Lithuania, TVP Wilno, appeared already in 2010, but its implementation ended in failure. At the beginning of May 2016, after a five-year break, the permanent foreign correspondence office of TVP in Vilnius was reactivated. Work related to the launch of the channel resumed in July 2018, when Mirosław Ciunowicz, as the representative of the management board, started creating the editorial office of the TVP Wilno channel. The then head of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, Michał Dworczyk, announced in August 2018 that the channel would be broadcast in the fall of the same year. On January 11, 2019, member of the management board of TVP S.A. and one of the originators of the station, Maciej Stanecki, stated at the conference that under favorable conditions, TVP Wilno could launch at the turn of March and April 2019.

On March 21, 2019, the then president of Telewizja Polska, Jacek Kurski, and the secretary of state for the Polish diaspora, European policy and public diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk, signed an agreement on the creation, co-financing and distribution of the TVP Wilno channel, which, according to these plans, was to launch in May 2019. On July 1, 2019, Telewizja Polska announced the completion of the team and announced the start of tests in the same month. On September 4, 2019, during the XXIX Economic Forum in Krynica, a press conference of Telewizja Polska was held regarding the inauguration of TVP Wilno.

The channel started broadcasting on September 17, 2019 at 17:30 Polish time (18:30 Lithuanian time). The first program broadcast was the Info Wilno news service. On the same day, the inaugural gala of TVP Wilno took place at the Polish Cultural Center in Vilnius, attended by: Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki, then Minister of Communication of Lithuania Jarosław Narkiewicz, then head of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister Michał Dworczyk, Chancellor of the Government of Lithuania Algirdas Stončaitis, then Polish ambassador to the Republic of Poland. Litewska - Urszula Doroszewska, Secretary of State for the Polish diaspora, European policy and public diplomacy - Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk, then chairman of the National Broadcasting Council - Witold Kołodziejski, then president of TVP S.A. Jacek Kurski, then member of the management board of TVP S.A. Marzena Paczuska and invited guests.

Initially, the TVP Wilno program consisted of the TVP Polonia schedule and a specially prepared block of programs for the residents of Lithuania, broadcast during prime time from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Polish time (6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Lithuanian time). Currently, the station broadcasts an independent program every day 24 hours a day.

On May 2, 2021, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and the head of the Lithuanian government Ingrida Šimonytė signed the foundation act regarding the expansion of the Polish Cultural Center in Vilnius and the new headquarters of TVP Wilno, and in September of the same year, the cornerstone for the expansion was laid. On September 10, 2021, the program began broadcasting in HD quality. In March 2023, a new, refreshed version of the TVP Wilno online portal was made available - wilno.tvp.pl. Exactly two years after signing the foundation act - on May 2, 2023 - the new headquarters of the TVP Wilno editorial office was opened, which houses, among others, modern studio and newsroom facilities.

Availability[edit]

Digital terrestrial television in Lithuania[edit]

On September 17, 2019, the TVP Wilno program was made available in Lithuania in the local digital terrestrial television multiplex in the Švenčionys, Šalčininkai and Vilnius regions, while on September 10, 2021, the image quality there was increased to HD. On July 28, 2022, the program joined the Lithuanian national multiplex MUX-2 along with the channels TVP Info, TVP Historia 2, TVP Polonia, TVP World and Belsat TV.

Cable networks in Poland and Lithuania[edit]

The station has been broadcasting throughout Lithuania via selected cable networks since September 2020. From September 23, 2021, TVP Wilno is part of the offer of the largest Lithuanian cable television operator Telia Lietuva. At the beginning of February 2022, operators in Poland also started making this channel available, including: Telewizja Kablowa Chopin from Wejherowo and Pelmar from Pelplin.

Internet[edit]

Some of the materials can be watched free of charge live on the Internet on the HbbTV platform, the TVP Stream website and the TVP VOD application.

Outside Poland and Lithuania[edit]

From July 16, 2021, TVP Wilno is available to viewers in the United States on the Sling TV IPTV/OTT service.

In 2019, TVP announced its intention to expand the station's coverage to Latvia in the future. In March 2023, the Latvian National Council for Electronic Media (the equivalent of the Polish National Broadcasting Council) decided to include TVP Info, TVP World, TVP Wilno and Belsat TV in the list of audiovisual programs rebroadcast in Latvia, which will allow TVP to cooperate with Latvian cable networks.

Documentaries

On July 11, 2022, the premiere of the documentary film Ponary, produced by TVP Vilnius, took place at the MO Museum in Vilnius. Variety by Chance directed by Piotr Kuciński. The picture tells the story of the murders called "Vilnius Katyn" - executions carried out in the Ponary forests in 1941-1944. After the film screening, there was a debate with the participation of the Vice-President of the Institute of National Remembrance, Dr. M. Szpytma and the President of the Polish-Lithuanian Foundation. J. Giedroyc prof. A. Nikžentaitis. In addition, the station produced, among others, document of Blessed priest Michał Sopoćko - apostle of mercy.

Concert of the Holiday Tour of Two in Vilnius[edit]

On July 4, 2022, for the first time in history, Wakacyjna Trasa Dwójka's concert took place abroad, which was related to the presence of TVP Vilnius in Lithuania. The concert, which took place at the Cathedral Square in Vilnius, gathered an average of 1.85 million viewers in front of TV sets in Poland. Performers included: Kajra i Sławomir, Stachursky, Ricchi e Poveri, Daria, Kuba Szmajkowski, Komodo.

Poles from Lithuania in "The Voice of Poland"[edit]

In 2022, auditions for The Voice of Poland were also held in Lithuania for the first time. Six vocalists from the Vilnius region took part in the "blind auditions", of which four of them advanced to the next stages. The finalist of the 13th edition of the music show was Ewelina Gancewska, a Lithuanian citizen of Polish origin.
