Hana as a feminine multicultural given name with a variety of origins in different languages.

Origins

[edit]

Hana is primarily known to be associated as an alternative spelling to the Hebrew name Hannah meaning "favour, grace". Hana as an alternative spelling to Hannah is used in many languages such as Czech, Slovak and Croatian.[1]. The name can also be used by people of Palestinian and Bosnian heritage.

In Europe, Hana is also a feminine given name in Albanian, allegedly derived from Albanian "the moon" (hëna), or "Monday" (e Hane), referring to the first day of the week.

In the Middle East and South Asia, Hana as a feminine given name is used in Arabic, Kurdish and Persian and Urdu. Hana, written as هَنا or هناء in Arabic, or as حناع in Urdu, both mean "bliss, happiness". However, written as هانا in Kurdish, it means "hope", and written as حَنا in Persian, it means "flower".

In East Asia, Hana is a femine given name in Korean and Japanese. In Korean, Hana means the number "one" (하나); it is a native Korean name and does not have corresponding hanja. In Japanese, Hana typically means "flower" and can be written as , or はな, however different kanji can be used to create new meanings other than "flower".

In other languages, Hana means "work" or "craft" in Hawaiian, and "to shine, to glow, to give out heat" in Māori.
