FORM Athletica Inc.[2] (known as FORM) is a Canadian technology company headquartered in Vancouver, Canada. On July 9, 2019, the company announced the FORM Swim Goggles, a pair of swimming goggles with integrated activity tracking capabilities and a see-through heads-up display that shows performance metrics to the wearer.[1] The goggles became available for $199 from the company's website on August 7, 2019.[3]

FORM was founded in 2016 by Dan Eisenhardt, a technology entrepreneur and former competitive swimmer.[1] Eisenhardt was previously the co-founder and CEO of Recon Instruments, a Canadian technology company that released one of the first consumer heads-up displays in 2010,[4] more than a year before the introduction of Google Glass, and was acquired by Intel in 2015.[5] Intel closed Recon Instruments in 2017,[6] and some former employees were subsequently re-hired by Eisenhardt at FORM.[7]

Products[edit]

As of September 2019, FORM's products include the FORM Swim Goggles and the FORM Swim App, a companion mobile app for smartphones. Both products cater to swimmers.

The FORM Swim Goggles have a design reminiscent of conventional swimming goggles, but they integrate a see-through heads-up display powered by a wearable computer that sits along the edge of one of the eye cups.[8] The wearable computer was trained using machine learning to detect strokes and other movements in the pool based on data from internal sensors.[9] Data from the computer is fed to the display, allowing the wearer to see metrics like split times, stroke rate, distance, and calories while they swim.[10] The design is also reversible so that the display and computer can be worn on either side.[9]

On September 3, 2019, FORM announced that it was working with Polar Electro to add support for some of Polar's heart rate monitors to the goggles.[11]

The FORM Swim App is a free mobile app for iOS and Android that allows users to review activity data tracked by the goggles and to configure the metrics displayed in the goggles. This app includes some social media features, such as allowing users to follow each other.[12] It also connects to other activity tracking platforms, including Strava, TrainingPeaks, and Garmin Connect.

Reception[edit]

Press reviews of the FORM Swim Goggles have been generally positive.[13][9][14][10][3] Compared to smartwatches from companies like Apple Inc. or Garmin, the goggles are said to deliver more accurate metrics and, because the display is always visible, more immediate feedback to the user.[15][12][14] The physical fit of the goggles has also been praised.[14][13] Opinions on the goggles' $199 price are mixed: some reviewers believe the price is competitive,[9] while others think it should be lower.[12] Multiple reviews say the goggles are better suited to serious swimmers than to more casual swimmers.[16][10][15]
