The Military history WikiProject Newsletter Issue I - March 2006
Project news An independent military history peer review has been created for the benefit of the project. A number of articles have already been reviewed, receiving significantly more feedback within the project than they did on the generic peer review page. The project's Collaboration of the Fortnight got off to a great start with Ferdinand Foch and is now focusing on the military history of Spain. Two new task forces—dealing with warfare during classical antiquity and the Middle Ages—have been created. An effort to build a catalogue of high-quality maps for use in military history articles is now underway. The newly-formed translation department is looking for volunteers to help with translating featured articles from other-language Wikipedias.	From the Coordinators Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Military history WikiProject's newsletter! We hope that this new format will help members—especially those who may be unable to keep up with some of the rapid developments that tend to occur—find new groups and programs within the project that they may wish to participate in. Please consider this inital issue to be a prototype; as always, any comments and suggestions are quite welcome, and will help us improve the newsletter in the coming months. Current proposals Proposed guidelines for categories of military people are currently being discussed. A number of issues have already been resolved, but the proposed scheme is still in draft form and further input would be very welcome.

Byzantine Heraldry

Hi Dryzen,

As requested, here is the list of Byzantine Noble Families and the heraldic description of their Arms. It's very difficult to get a hold of any information regarding shield types (if, in fact they used shields to display them). I would say that the usual square flags/banners/labarums were used; and if any shields were used in armorial blazons, they may have been used after extensive contact with dynasties from the "west". Shield designs in the Byzantine Army were usually ancient Greco/Roman patterns and religious motifs/images (Cross, Virgin, Christ).

As far as format goes, digital vector graphics would be preferable. Though, just being able to have a look at what they were like would be great - so, I'm not too fussed. I can point you towards this good Roman Empire site. But that's it for internet sources. As for Books I wouldp oitn you towards sevral of Osprey's Books, namely, Rome at War AD 293–696. There are several other books that look into the subject whom I cannot remember the names of at this moment. I'll look into my library and post them later on. I hope this helps. Hello Dryzen. Concerning your last edit summary in Template:Byzantine Empire infobox (which u self-reverted). The medieval Greeks named their state 'Ρωμανία', whereas the official name was 'Βασιλεία Ρωμαίων' or 'Βασίλειον των Ρωμαίων' (=kingdon). It is more or less the same as the modern Americans or Spanish name theirs, a.k.a. 'America' instead of 'United States of America' and 'Spain' instead of 'Kingdom of Spain' (in spanish, of course). so, i do not think is any sort of a big deal:). Implemented in an article it can look like in Mongol bow (including some misunderstanding) or Indian Wars. While we (mostly me) think it is a great thing (contrary to the long frustrating negotiations for images that can not keep up with the rapid expansion of articles and new requests), it would require some people to use it and not overdo it. You just have to google missing images and insert the url with a short description. I would really appreciate it, especially for the feedback. Thank you a lot. I think about starting a map creation service with capable editors (as part of the requested images departement). While you have little time to do something (battle of Chalons) perhaps you could help a bit on technical issues.
