Early life, Education & work

[edit]

Born in May 1966 in Yimbo, Siaya County, Kenya, Owuor is the second born in a family of nine.[6][7][8] He started schooling in Wambasa Primary school, Yimbo, among other schools since his father Hezekia Owour worked as a civil servant with the East African Community Prison Service, thus got transferred time by time within the East Africa region. Upon completion of his primary education in Uganda, Owuor joined Mbale Senior Secondary School, then St. Peters Collage for his 'O' and 'A' academic levels respectively. He later joined Makerere University but due to the country's unrest by then, he relocated to Nairobi, thereby enrolling for a bachelor's degree in Science at the University of Nairobi.[9] After his graduation in 1988, he earned German and Israeli scholarships for his Master's degree, choosing Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, where he changed his subject of study from Plant genetics to Molecular biology and graduated in 1994. He returned to Kenya shortly after then to Israel again for his doctorate in Biochemical genetics at Haifa University. After earning his doctorate degree, Edward Owuor proceeded to the United States and worked at the University of Chicago's Centre for Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and also as a lecturer of Pharmacy and Drug design. He later worked at the Rutgers University in the Pharmaceutical Faculty and then at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey until 2003.[10]
