Qualifying[edit]

It was clear that qualifying would only be a batlle of the teammates - Ferrari had dominated all the sessions with McLaren behind them but still comfortably ahead of Williams who received no threat from Jordan. The Ferrari battle for pole was won by Rubens Barrichello and so Michael Schumacher had to settle for second while David Coulthard won the McLaren battle ahead of Mika Häkkinen. Juan Pablo Montoya was able to edge Ralf Schumacher for fifth with Jarno Trulli surprisingly beating Heinz-Harald Frentzen to seventh.

Race[edit]

The race was a much closer affair in the wet as Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher took off at first and second but Mika Häkkinen beat teammate David Coulthard into the first corner with Heinz-Harald Frentzen doing the same to Jarno Trulli. Barrichello was leading from Schumacher, Häkkinen, Coulthard, Juan Pablo Montoya, Ralf Schumacher, Frentzen and Trulli. At the start of the second lap, Schumacher went to the gravel at the Senna S and dropped down to eighth. On lap 5, Häkkinen's engine blew and he spun off on his own oil into the middle of the track. Everyone avoided him, but the safety car was brought out. Once the saftey car left, there was no real action as gaps came up between two cars.

During the first round of pitstops, the main entertainment was provided by Schumacher, who got ahead of Trulli. He then began to close in on Frentzen but was unable to pass. On lap 42, a TV camera fell off Jean Alesi's lapped car and directly hit Trulli's suspension, wrecking it and sending Trulli out. During the second round of stops, Schumacher got ahead of Frentzen but there was more action as Coulthard pressed his speed limiter button after his car was in the pitlane and he was given a stop-go penalty. Barrichello dominated until a tyre burst on his car, and he was forced to retire. At the same time, Coulthard went in for his stop-go penalty, rejoining behind Montoya, Ralf and Schumacher. Schumacher would quickly pass Ralf and take second. Coulthard would also climb up on Ralf's tail but could not pass. Montoya took his first ever win ahead of Schumacher, Ralf, Coulthard, Giancarlo Fisichella, Jacques Villeneuve, Olivier Panis and Jenson Button.

Notes[edit]

  • Lap Leaders: Rubens Barrichello 53 (1-23, 25-49, 51-55), David Coulthard 3 (24, 50, 56), Juan Pablo Montoya 15 (57-71)
  • First Win: Juan Pablo Montoya
  • Mika Häkkinen suffered his worst start to a Formula One season, as this retirement meant that he had not seen the chequered flag in any of the first three races.
  • David Coulthard was supposed to take the lead when Rubens Barrichello's tyre burst but he was in the pits for a stop-go penalty as he was speeding in the pitlane during his second stop.
  • This race was run under heavy rain but amazing only one driver retired because he spun off into the gravel trap.
