In 1959, the government of the Republic of Vietnam issued a decree dividing the districts of Saigon City into many wards. Of which, District 1 has 4 wards: Bến Nghé, Hòa Bình, Tự Đức and Trần Quang Khải. The current Bến Nghé ward corresponds to the two wards of Bến Nghé and Hòa Bình[a] at that time, the boundary of the two wards is Lê Thánh Tôn street.

After 1975, Hòa Bình ward was merged into Bến Nghé ward. However, in 1976, Bến Nghé ward was dissolved and divided into 3 wards: Ward 8, Ward 9 and Ward 10.[1]

On August 26, 1982, the Council of Ministers issued Decision 147-HĐBT (Quyết định 147-HĐBT)[2]. Accordingly, Ward 9 is dissolved to merge into Wards 8, 10, 18 and 19 (which is now part of Nguyen Thai Binh ward).

On December 28, 1988, Issued by the Council of Ministers Quyết định (Decision) 184-HĐBT[1]. Accordingly, the entire area and population of Ward 8 and Ward 10 were merged to re-establish Ben Nghe ward.
