Jung Ho-seok (born February 19, 1994; Hangul: 정호석), better known as J-Hope, is a South Korean rapper, dancer, choreographer and singer-songwriter. He is the main dancer and lead rapper of the South Korean boy group BTS, managed under Big Hit Entertainment. In 2015, he released his first solo track on Soundcloud titled 1 Verse.[1]

Biography

[edit]

Jung Hoseok was born on February 18, 1994 in Gwangju, South Korea and he has one older sister.[2] Before his debut with BTS he was part of a street dance team "Neuron" where he specialized in popping especially in it's sub-genre boogaloo.[3] He chose his stage name because he wants to represent the "hopeful existence" of his group with the J representing his last name Jung.[1] J-Hope went to the same Gwangju based dance academy as Big Bang's Seungri, TVXQ's Yuhno and former 2ne1 member Minzy.[4] He has appeared on several music shows before his debut due to his feature in Animal, a song by 2AM's Jo Kwon.[5][6][7] He often participates in the group's choreography making as well as helping the other members with their dancing. He has received praises from their choreographer Song Seongdeuk.[3][8][9]

J-Hope cites Beenzino, A$AP Rocky, J.Cole and G-Dragon as his role models.[3][10]

Career

[edit]

J-Hope debuted alongside fellow Bangtan members on June 13, 2013 with their debut single "No More Dream" from their first album 2 Cool 4 Skool.[11]

He has produced and written lyrics for a variety of BTS songs.[12]
