iPartment (Chinese: 爱情公寓; pinyin: Aìqíng Gōngyù), is a sitcom from Mainland China. It was produced by Shanghai Film Group Corporation and Shanghai Film Studio, aired by Jiangxi TV in August 2009, with 20 45-minute episodes. There are four episodes in total.[1][2]。
Investors and Producers[edit]
Ipartment is owned by a social network company, the four founders are Taiwanese, it is funded by JAIC and CyberAgent from Japan. [3] [4] "Ipartment" was a tool for promoting the social network website "Ipartment" at first[5][6][7][8][9]
Plot Introduction[edit]
Season 1[edit]
Zhanbo Lu,a graduated student from abroad, met Wanyu Lin, a ambitious rich girl who tried to escape from her family for freedom on the bus. They decided to go to the "Ipartment" to attend a wedding that is hosted by Lu's sister, Yifei Hu, and the Xiaoxian Zeng. Meijia Chen met Ziqiao Lu, her ex-boyfriend, at the wedding by accident. Shenqi Guangu wanted to find the Aisen Apartment, but he was tricked to decide to live at Ipartment by Meijia Chen and Ziqiao Lu who wanted someone to share the rent with them.[10]
Season 1.5[edit]
Season 1.5 was funded by Intel[11]Season 1.5 was only shown online and it's 5 episodes, 80 mins in total. It first released on June 7th, 2010 on [youku.com]、[iqiyi.com]、[sina.com]Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).
Season 2[edit]
When the season one released to public, the crew had already planned to start the season two[12] It started on Feburary 2010, due to the documents, actors and script.[13] It finished shooting on May.[14]. In order to collect ideas and stories from people, the crew organized a Internet activity for people voting and writing the plot of the eposide.[15][16]
Season 3[edit]
Ipartment 3 started on July 13th,2011. The 8 most popular actors and actresses was back in Season 3.[17]
Season 4[edit]
After Ipartment 3, the plot of Season 4 became the hot topic. After the crank up of Season 4, Michael Chen posted a photo of Demolition of the site, and the other actors and actresses left some sad comments, which made people feel that season 4 was the end of Ipartment.[18] However, director Yuan Wang said season 4 was not the end, they were preparing a film.[19]
Comments and controversy[edit]
The plot, story and cast of Ipartment are similar to AmericanComedy “Friends” and “How I met Your Mother’’, therefore, people called it “Chinese Friends”.[20] [21] There were compliments and criticism at the same time.[22] Also, Ipartment was considered to be a well-translated eposide.[23] Moreover, it was criticized for Plagiarism by several international media. [24][25]
Criticism[edit]
“Ipartment” is the same style as American eposides. For example, it was considered that the acting, narration, style is similar to “Friends”. There were also example shown that “Ipartment” season 1.5 was plagiarized from “The Big Bang Theory”. [26][27]. Season 3 was still considered to be plagiarism.[28][29] Director admitted that “Ipartment” was influenced by the American style, there were many elements that were taken from American eposide, but he didn’t agree that the story was the same as the “Friends”. However, he said he did learn from the plot of the “Friends”, and he believed that “once there is imitation, there will be progress.[30] Due to the plagiarism of the book “Diary of Bao Lai” on August 4th,2012, “Ipartment 3” apologized to the writer Bao Lai, and paid for the fine.[31]
