Nie Yinniang (Chinese: 聶隱娘) is set in 9th century China during the Tang Dynasty and the whole article is in Feixingchuanqi (Chinese: 裴鉶传奇).[1] Nie Yinniang, a female killer, is appointed to slay corrupt government officials by her master, Jiaxin, a nun who raised her from the age of ten. When Yinniang displayed mercy by failing to kill the offical, Jiaxin punisheed her with a ruthless assignment that designed to test Yinniang’s resolve. She was sent to the distant province in northern China to kill its military governor Tian Ji'an.[2]

Plot

Nie Yinniang, an ancient Chinese legendary short story, chuanqi, applies for the written character in a novel published in Tang Dynasty.[3] She was the daughter of Nie Feng, a general under control of Tang Dynasty celebrity Tian Ji'an. At the age of 10, Nie Yinniang was kidnapped by a woman's spell. The nun taught Nie fencing and other kinds of mysterious kungfu, that can stab people in the day and no man can detect from it. Five years later, Nie was sent to home. Because of Yinniang's special kungfu, her father, Nie Feng, was scared. In a long time, Nie always went out during the nighttime and came back in the morning and her father was too frightened to ask her situations. With special skills, Nie Yinniang chose a man who working on polishing the mirror as her husband. After the death of Nie's father, Tian Ji'an happened to realize Nie Yinniang's special skills and hired her as an assistant. During the reign of TangXianZong, Tian Ji'an had an adversarial relationship with Liu Changyi, another famous general at that time. At this time, Liu went in for divination, and forecast things exactly. Therefore, Nie Yinniang was surprised and admired Liu, and she turned to work for Liu. Tian Ji'an was angry about this situation and appointed Jingjinger to slay Nie Yinniang and Liu Changyi, but she killed him instead. Therefore, Tian sent Kongkonger to assassinate Liu, but Nie used spells to defeat it. Finally, Liu Changyi was safe and treated Nie better than ever. A few years later, after Liu came to the capital to work for the emperor, Nie farewell. After the death of Liu, Nie Yinniang went to the Liu's coffin to bow and cry.

Influence

This short story is the first one to modify the real life situation and firstly used a woman as its protagonist. During the Tang Dynasty, in Chuanqi, only Nie yinniang and Red String are two pieces of writing whose protagonist is a woman, which is the opening of women fictions.

The Assassin (Chinese: 刺客聶隱娘) is a 2015 martial arts film directed by Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien. [4] At Cannes, Hou won the award for Best Director for this film. It was released in China on 27 August 2015. It was selected as the Taiwanese entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards.[4]
