The Barnstable High School Red Raider Marching Band is located at Barnstable High School, in Hyannis, Massachusetts. It is the proud has been the champion of Division 2 in MICCA for the past three years. Although it has suffered budget cutbacks in recent years which led to the reduction in students in the band, the band has rebounded to about 65 membersstudents, including those in the color guard and percussion sections. Down from a peak of over 100 band members in the mid 1990's and 16 auxiliary members in 2000, the size of the band has crept up to 65 people.

History

===Beginnings=== The Barnstable High School Marching Band was founded in 1930. It originally consisted of members who made up grades 7-12. This was due to the fact that the middle school was located next door to the high school. Between its founding and the 1950s, the band was small and played at the football games.

===Expansion and Peak=== With the building of the new high school in 1959, the band was able to expand along with the size of the school. In the 1970s, the band began to become competitive. They It eventually won the state championship in the late 1970s. From the 1980s to 2000, the band was at its peak, having over 100 members. In 2000, the band received a brand new music room as part of the renovations at the school. The room even came with an elevator to move people and equipment up the risers. That year, it was even voted one of the Best 100 Communities for Music Education in America.

===Decline=== In May, 2001, local voters rejected a $6.7 million school override to help pay for the school budget. The resulting cuts led to significant cuts to the band's the band to face a dire crisis. Budgetary problems led to the town cutting the band's staffing and budget, leaving nine teachers out of work. This subsequently led to the high school having the only remaining music program in town. It also led to the cutting of the marching band season.

Faced with such a dire crisis, supporters of the music program in town held emergency fundraising events to support the music program and band, generatingers. These included concerts, and other means for the town to be able to save the music program. The campaign was led by three parents and percussion director John Jamison. The fundraising was so successful that almost a quarter of a million dollars was raised. This led to the feeder programs in the Barnstable Middle Schools and Barnstable Horace Mann Charter School being reestablished. A $24,300 grant from KeySpan Energy even brought back the music program for the town. Fees of $125 were included with participation in the band. They could be waived if the person participating was considered to be in poverty. In 2005, the fees were eliminated. This led to the rise of the size of the band. ==Staff==

Throughout the fall and winter leading into the spring, the Barnstable High School Marching Band can be found frequently performs ing at many various venues, such as . These include, but are not limited to, football games, holidays, and even community events, as well as . At each event, the band plays tunes not only that match the situation, but also keep the listeners engaged. These games are usually filled with temperature extremes but the band is known to keep on playing no matter what the weather. Various trips are performed throughout the year, including a bi-yearly appearance at Fiestaval.

Competitions

The Red Raiders primarily march in the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association circuit, often referred to as MICCA. Other appearances occur at the NESBA and USSBA marching shows around the state. The purpose of the MICCA circuit is not to judge bands one against the other, but instead to promote the growth of each individual band. The Winter Percussion unit, an offshoot of the marching band season, competes in Winter Guard International championships on a bi-yearly basis. The winter percussion was the 2004 Class A NESBA Champions. The Winter Guard has won Class Championships in 2000, 2001 & 2004.

== The Band Boosters == The Barnstable Band Boosters supply the band members with funds to go on trips and other activities that they otherwise wouldn't be able to afford. Fundraisers include summer car washes, helping at the Hyannis Mets games, magazine sales, and helping out at various school events in order to earn points. The most important sale of the year though is the fruit sale. This occurs from October to November and is the biggest fundraiser of the year.
