Pio Manzù (Bergamo, 2 March 1939 – Brandizzo, 26 May 1969) was an Italian designer known for his work in automobiles and furniture. His birth name was Pio Manzoni.

Biography[edit]

Manzù was the son of sculptor Giacomo Manzù, born Giacomo Manzoni, and adopted the same pseudonymous surname as his father. Manzù's mother was Giacomo's first wife, Antonia ("Tina"), née Oreni.[1] After completing his classical high school studies in 1959, he enrolled at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm the following year, where he specialized in industrial design under the direction of the Argentine designer and philosopher Tomás Maldonado. http://en.smarredamenti.it/footer/about-us/designers/pio-manzu

Following his graduation in 1964, he created a series of furniture design projects, and began contributing to various international publications, producing articles and drawings on the subject of automotive design. At the same time he continued at the Ulm school as an assistant.

In 1965, Manzù and fellow designer Michael Conrad, along with German journalist Fritz Bob Busch, established the Autonova design group, which focused strongly on the scientific knowledge of materials and industrial processes. The group was noticed by Dante Giacosa of FIAT, as well as by the managers of various other Italian and German automotive companies, such as NSU, Glas, Pirelli, Recaro, VDO and BASF.

Collaborations with these important companies, together with the support of the Turinese carrozzeria Sibona & Basano, led to the creation of the Autonova Fam prototypes, on Glas 1004 mechanics, and Autonova GT, based on the Prinz 1000 TT and Ro 80.

The cooperation with the Centro Stile Fiat, even if desired by Giacosa, was initially opposed by the Turin manufacturer's mistrustful attitude towards external consultants, who feared insufficient knowledge of the product industrialization processes. The first experience, however, led to the execution of a concept car intended for the use of taxis, built in 1968 on 850 mechanics and with avant-garde technical and stylistic solutions, which merged Autonova's experiments; the City Taxi, a sort of multi-space utility vehicle ante litteram, did not go into production but provided the basis on which, a few years later, the A-segment heir to the historic Fiat 500, the Fiat 126, was developed.

"In 1967 designer Pio Manzù showed his mid-engined Prototipo 111 based on the transverse powertrain from the Autobianchi A111 sedan, and one year later displayed his Autobianchi Coupé at the Turin Auto Show. A similar design that used the powertrain from the Autobianchi Primula was done by Dante Giacosa at Società industriale ricerche automobilistiche (SIRA - Automotive Industry Research Company), with initial fabrication done by OSI, and a full prototype called the G31 built later by Centro Stylo Fiat in 1969.[2]

Fiat 127

The debut test convinced Giacosa to entrust him, in the same year, with the stylistic study of the Fiat 127, a new car destined to revolutionize the concept of "popular car" and become the reference model for world production in the 1970s.[3]

In 1969 Manzù was the only non-French juror included by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in the commission for the choice of the cars planned for the "Bolide Design" exhibition at the Louvre, but he did not live to see the display.

Death[edit]

Manzù died on May 26, 1969, while on his way to present the final maquette of his design for the Fiat 127 to Fiat's management in Turin. Driving his wife's Fiat 500, he was the sole victim of an auto accident on the "Autostrada Torino-Milano", near the Brandizzo toll booth. Manzù's car left the road, possibly due to his having fallen asleep. Manzù was alive but in serious condition when removed from the wreckage, but died in the ambulance en route to hospital.[3]

Manzù was survived by wife Eleonore Liebl Manzù, and three children: Giacomo, Francesca and Libero.[6]
