A majority of action game finalists and winners have shooter games, mostly first-person shooters. Gears of War is the only third-person shooter that's ever won. Four finalists could be played in either first or third person: Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, The Suffering, Star Wars Battlefront (2015), and PlayerUnknown's Battleground, the latter two have won. In addition, PlayerUnknown's Battleground is also the only battle royale finalist and winner. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3 and Rainbow Six: Vegas are the only tactical shooters that have won. Other tactical shooter finalists include Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear, Ghost Recon, and Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30. Overwatch is the only hero shooter winner with Team Fortress 2 releasing as part of the The Orange Box. The only arena shooter finalists are Quake III Arena, Unreal Tournament, and Unreal Tournament 2004. Borderlands 2 is the only looter shooter finalist and winner. The only top-down shooter finalists have been Helldivers, the twin-stick shooter The Ascent, and the roguelike, bullet hell, Vampire Survivors, which won for 2022. Other shoot 'em up finalists have been the musical rail shooter Rez, Resogun, and the cartoonish, run and gun game Cuphead. The only beat 'em up finalists have been Viewtiful Joe, Sifu, and Hi-Fi Rush. God of War (2005) is the only hack and slash winner. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow is the only stealth game winner. Grounded is the only survival game finalist. Super Smash Bros. was finalist for Console Action in addition to Console Fighting

There have also been several action-adventure game finalists, even after separate awards for action and adventure games would be offered after 2007. Since 2008, action-adventure game winners included Dead Space (2008), Red Dead Redemption, Control and Marvel's Spider-Man 2. The original 1998 Resident Evil 2 was a finalist for both Console Action and Console Adventure awards. Banjo-Kazooie won the award for Console Action was also being named as a finalist Console Adventure. Platform games were frequently nominated for console awards before separate genre awards for console and computer were dropped after 2005. Since 2005 the only other platform game winner has been Celeste since. Shadow Complex and Metroid Dread are the only Metroidvania finalists. The only side-scrolling video game finalists have been Viewtiful Joe and Cuphead. Other platform finalists since 2005 include Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, Daxter, and Neon White. Jet Set Radio Future combined elements of a platform game and ane sports game. There were five graphic adventure games named as finalists for PC Action/Adventure between 2001 and 2005: Escape From Monkey Island, Myst III: Exile, Syberia, Uru: Ages Beyond Myst, Myst IV: Revelation. Pikmin 2, a real-time strategy puzzle video game was named for Console Action/Adventure in 2005. That same year, the real-time tactics, Full Spectrum Warrior was named as a finalist for both Console Action/Adventure and Computer Action/Adventure.

The only action role-playing game winners have been Deus Ex, Borderlands 2, Hades, and Vampire Survivors. Parasite Eve was a finalist for Console Role-Playing in addition to Console Action. Similarly, Deus Ex was a finalist for PC Role-Playing, in addition to winning PC Action. Deus Ex: Invisible War was a finalist for Console First-Person Action. Other Role-Playing shooter game finalists are Armada, The Ascent, and Returnal. Returnal and Vampire Survivors are the only roguelike finalists, the former which won. Hades is the only roguelite finalist and winner. Other action role-playing game finalists are Vagrant Story and Nioh 2, the former is the only Soulslike finalist.

A few vehicle simulation games were amongst the early finalists for action awards. Crazy Taxi is a racing game that won Console Action in 2000. There are three vehicular combat game finalists: Carmageddon Max Pack, CyberStrike 2, and Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon. Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge is the only combat flight simulation game winner, with other finalist including, Wing Commander: Prophecy, Air Warrior III, and Crimson Skies.
