Shakespeare/37[edit]

Shakespeare/37 is a Hungarian project launched in 2021 by theatre director László Magács and produced by the online theatre company WebSzínház. The company hired Hungarian writers to reinterpret all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays and using those scripts, created 20 minute videos of each play available for viewing on WebSzínház’s website. The project is currently unfinished, with 22 episodes aired in two seasons and 15 more planned.

About Shakespeare/37[edit]

The project’s aim is to re-imagine all 37 Shakespearean plays in a contemporary 21st century setting, with the help of Hungarian writers. The episodes only take inspiration from Shakespeare plays as each retelling centres on a certain character or question. Some of the actors and actresses of the project appear in multiple episodes and play different roles: for example, Kristóf Fröhlich plays as both Borachio and Hamlet[1].

The project’s media partner is Litera, a Hungarian literary website. Each aired episode’s transcript can be found on said website.

The project's episodes can be viewed with English subtitles[2].

Theatre, Film and Shakespeare/37[edit]

Shakespeare/37 belongs to a genre between theatre and film: Litera calls it “Film/Theatre”[2]. In the project, film is used to emulate theatrical scenes. Each script is made into a 20 minute short film, inspired by Dogma-films. The project took an unconventional approach to film-making. Director László Magács had specific requests towards the writers: besides giving a 20-30 minute length restriction to the works, he asked the writers to include only one plot line, time and place[3]. In addition, all videos were filmed in one take[2]. One take allows actors to present their acting in a more organic manner, similar to a live theatre performance. According to Natália Pikli, “it can work great, if the writers respect the boundaries set”[3].

Why Shakespeare?[edit]

Shakespeare’s works were chosen as a WebSzínház project because they wished to attract the attention of both Hungarian and international viewership[4]. The project is unique since Shakespeare is often presented in a different context, but rarely rewritten[3].

Shakespeare/37’s Debut[edit]

The Shakespeare/37 project was first presented to audiences during Budapest Tavaszi Fesztivál in 14 April 2021[2]. Throughout the duration of the festival, those interested could attend the screening of the aired episodes.

2021[edit]

In 1 July 2021 at Gyulai Várszínház, three of the videos’ scripts were read out by the actors in them. The three scripts were Athéni Timon, Szeget szeggel and III. Richárd. The authors (László Márton, István Tasnádi and István Vörös) were also present[5].

2022[edit]

From 29 June to 2 July 2022, all 22 episodes were screened at Kolorádó Fesztivál[6]. The 22 episodes were available for viewing at Bánkitó Fesztivál from 13 to 16 July 2022[7]. Then the project held a three-day screening from 3 to 6 August during Ördögkatlan Fesztivál[8]. During these three festivals, the episodes were played in order of airtime, for 11 hours a day. If one wished, they could watch all episodes in one sitting.

Shakespeare/37’s Awards[edit]

In May 2022, Shakespeare/37’s first episode Montague és Capulet (directed by László Magács, produced by Tamás Csutak, Dániel Herner, László Magács) was nominated for a Magyar Mozgókép award in the category of Best television series[4]. Magyar Filmakadémia decided on the winners by voting anonymously. Shakespeare/37 ultimately won the award. The award ceremony took place at Petőfi Theatre in Veszprém on 12 June 2022[9].

Shooting Locations[edit]

Shakespeare/37 has no traditional theatrical setting, instead they utilise various places around Budapest such as Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, Kiscell Museum, Danubius Hotel and so on[2].

The Origins of WebSzínház[edit]

TRIP founded the first Hungarian quarantine theatre in 2020 which screened concerts, dance- and theatre performances online. The Hungarian quarantine theatre became the predecessor for WebSzínház. After the success of the quarantine theatre, TRIP rebranded and thus WebSzínház was launched. The company continues to work on other projects besides Shakespeare/37, however it remains their main focus[2].

WebSzínház introduces their mission on their Facebook website with the following: “WebSzínház’s goal is to reinterpret and expand the traditional framework of theatre by incorporating stylistic elements of cinema, music, literature, and digital culture, and to provide a complex, unique theatrical experience by introducing new, crossover genres, thus responding to the challenges of the changed world.”[10] Their slogan is: “No limits!”[10]

The very first episode of the Shakespeare/37 project aired on 12 April 2021.

Synopsis[edit]

The episode’s setting resembles a crypt with graffiti-decorated walls. Romeo and Juliette’s sheet covered bodies lay next to each other. Their parents circle the bodies, canting parental cliches such as ‘Grow up already!’, ‘Are you out of your mind?’ and so on. The episode raises questions about parent-child relationships, death and their combination. Quoting Natália Pikli, the Montague-Capulet parents are “stuck in their cliches and the blank space that is loss of communication between parent and child”[3].

Szeget szeggel by István Tasnádi - based on Measure for Measure

The second episode was made available for viewing on 12 April 2021.

Synopsis[edit]

The story of Measure for Measure is rewritten by Tasnádi to have a 21st century office setting. The episode takes place in a luxury apartment overlooking the Danube. Izabella and Claudio discuss whether familial love or virginity is more important while their employer Angelo is working at his desk less than two metres away.

The acting in this episode is rather peculiar: “The actors are a bit puppet-like. At times they have difficulty with complex words. And at times with easier ones too”[5]. Another unique aspect of the episode is the 4th wall breaking: at instances, the camera and even the director appears[3].

A plüss by Viktor Kovács and Dominik Kovács - based on King Lear

The third episode aired on 12 April 2021. The episode was shot in Danubius Hotel Helia.

Synopsis[edit]

The episode focuses on the relationship between Regan and her husband. They are in a kitchen, waiting for Gloster’s arrest. They kill time by dissecting the Plushie. The entire scene is grotesque, amplified by the sterile environment of the kitchen equipment. At the end comes a twist: after Regan and Cornwall leave, a girl emerges from the carcass of the Plushie and looks around in panic. Natália Pikli highlights “Regan’s sociopathy, Cornwall’s overthinking, the miscommunication between the couple and the puzzling identity of the girl as the episodes takeaways”[3].

The fourth episode aired on 21 April 2021.

Synopsis[edit]

Tetszik ahogy discusses the chaotic nature of being young and in love. While doing yoga in her home, Cili lectures her friend Rozina on not falling for sweet talking men. Olivér arrives at Cili’s house and at the sight of him Cili swoons. After that, Cili and Olivér flirt with each other. Overall, the episode reflects on difficulties youth face living together and the irony between theory and practice when someone rejects love[11].

Synopsis[edit]

Boracchio assaults Margaret sexually and even records it. Corrado is all but a ghostly presence in the episode who rarely talks. As Natália Pikli mentions, Boracchio’s distasteful monologues about women and Margaret’s body language as the victim “evokes a strong emotional effect”[12].

The episode aired on 05 May 2021. It was shot in Danubius Hotel Helia.

Synopsis[edit]

In a modern hotel room setting, the episode centres around Helena and unjust love. In her, the play's characters' desire and anxiety are encompassed. Simultaneously, Helena's character is duplicated into a person who performs a monologue and a silent pantomime, played by two separate actresses. Sound effects and camera changes lead the viewer through Helena's life without an actual change of setting taking place[12].

The episode aired on 12 May 2021. The episode's music is composed by Crocus.

Synopsis[edit]

Set in a party boat in front of the Hungarian Parliament, the seventh episode echoes the experience of youth in the 21st century. Hamlet struggles with his family relations and self. In the episode, Hamlet delivers his monologue while looking straight at the camera. He is repulsed by his mother and dissatisfied with his friends and Ophelia. In the bathroom, he encounters his father's ghost. By the end of the episode, Hamlet is seen alone. Just as Natália Pikli observes, the waves rocking the boat and the constant hum of sounds ranging in volume mirror the deep and unsettling dilemmas of Hamlet[1].

Synopsis[edit]

Titus, the director and the scriptwriter, Áron argue tirelessly about violence in art and how it can be presented. The feud is further complicated by their lover, Lavínia. Their hostility ends in death, along with the other characters who appear in the episode. Natália Pikli finds the episode fails to reinterpret the play properly: "While this version might have wanted to show total chaos, we drifted far from both a well-focused adaptation and Shakespeare"[1].

Synopsis[edit]

In the ninth episode, the ignorance of the elite and the desire for love are emphasised. The episode opens with a ten-minute sequence of the characters getting dressed in a fashionable boutique. Love and desire is shown to have no bounds: "it highlights genderfluid modernity", as Natália Pikli puts it[1].

Synopsis[edit]

Set in Danubius Hotel Gellért. The episode's characters' thirst for power is in the foreground. István Vörös alters the original roles of the Shakespeare-play and makes Anna the villain. The episode opens with László's monologue (which is Richard's in the original) and closes with Anna's. The power dynamics between men and women are also displayed: László seems to be the one holding all the power, but it is Anna who becomes the most powerful in the end[13].

Szellemidézés; avagy a Shylock effektus hatástalanítása by Gábor Lackó - based on The Merchant of Venice

The episode aired on 30 June 2021.

Synopsis[edit]

The episode is set in the synagogue on Rumbach Sebestyén street. The sole character in the episode is Shylock, a Jewish man who delivers a long monologue, accusing Shakespeare's conjured spirit of antisemitism and asking for better Jewish representation.

Natália Pikli also notes the episode's references to Shakespeare, specifically that the visuals of the synagogue resemble Shakespeare's Globe and that Shylock has a Royal Shakespeare Company paper bag[13].

The episode aired on 14 July 2021.

Synopsis[edit]

II. Richárd - átirat places the politics of the play into a village-like setting. Clad in a tracksuit, Richard goes to Marshall and his Lady for advice on a duel soon taking place. He is concerned because one of the participants is his cousin, Bolingbroke, who is a threat to Richard's throne. The episode represents lordship as ironic and devoid of prestige[13].

The episode aired on 01 December 2021.

Synopsis[edit]

The sixteen-minute episode set on a boat shows Desdemona and Emilia's conversation companied by Jago. Through the tense, at times flirtatious banter, Desdemona's dark past is revealed: she married Othello to escape from domestic violence.

Besides the topic of domestic violence, Natália Pikli observes the moment where Emilia comments on Jago's jokes not working in English reflects on the hardship of translating Shakespeare's works[14].

Synopsis[edit]

Miklós György Száraz incorporated Don Quijote and Pirandello's Henry IV into his King John rewriting. From butcher to King, King John is shown as a delusional character. His daughter and wife make ambiguous and ironic statements throughout the episode. Family relations, the duality of King John's delusional nature and politics ruining private businesses are all questioned in the episode[14].

Synopsis[edit]

The life of the outlaws is presented in this episode, with Budapest's street-view and the inside of a pub as its settings. There is a reason why András Forgách focuses on the outlaws, according to Natália Pikli: love can blossom anywhere if the suitable recipients are present[14].

Synopsis[edit]

In Legbölcsebb az idő, three men come to visit Paula's exhibition. Leon feels guilt and wishes for forgiveness from his wife, who is not seen through the episode. The episode also introduces a character, Gormley, who does not exist in the Shakespearean play. Similarly to Natália Pikli's thoughts, the episode requires great effort to unveil the meaning behind[15].

Synopsis[edit]

During the change of power, Falstaff becomes homeless. A prostitute named Tik-tok asks for Falstaff's hand in marriage but he refuses. During Falstaff and Harry's conversations, comments about politics and corruption surface. Falstaff passes away at the end of the episode. Natália Pikli highlights the heightened emotional connection between Falstaff and Harry constitute to the episode's greatness[15].

Synopsis[edit]

The episode is centered on a contract written by Biron, Longaville, Dumaine and Ferdinand. The episode opens with three men waiting for the fourth at the Fisherman's bastion. The story quickly turns from comic to dark: the men force feed Biron greaves (in Hungarian: töpörtyű) because he did not wish to sign the contract. Natália Pikli summarises the takeaway from the episode: "Those who ask questions are down on their luck in Navarra"[16].

Synopsis[edit]

Zoltán Egressy based his rewriting on a particular scene in The Tempest where Stephano and Trinculo encounter Caliban. The characters from Tom Stoppard's play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead appear as well. Natália Pikli finds the episode fails to locate a deeper meaning to the scene[16].

Synopsis[edit]

Timon lives in a theatre storage room. Halál Mama, who follows Timon throughout the episode, introduces the characters that interact with Timon.

László Márton bases the episode on other sources rather than the ones used by Shakespeare[17]. Márton's version highlights the parasitic nature of people[17].

Synopsis[edit]

Alexovic's script is written as an extention of the play. The episode takes place 10 years after the play's timeline, where Helena and Bertram have a child named Willy. The episode questions unhappy marriage dynamics.

According to Natália Pikli, the episode's execution is rather unsatisfactory: Alexovic's narration is full of clichés and too obvious[17].
