Maratus pavonis i(the Common peacock spider)[2] s a species of jumping spider in the Salticidae family,[3] and is endemic to Australia, where it is found in Western Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania.[3] The species epithet, 'pavonis, derives from the Latin, pavo, pavonis, meaning "peacock".[4]
The male holotype is tiny, measuring just 4.34 millimetres (0.171 in)[1]. In courtship, males in the Maratus genus extend their elongated third legs,[5] and only the male is so brightly and beautifully coloured.[6]
For its likeness and differences from Maratus splendens, see Otto & Hill (2011).[7]
