AdoroCinema is a Brazilian entertainment website.[1][2] The content includes releases, reviews, news about awards and stars of the screen.[3] It has the market's largest database in Portuguese, with more than 40 000 movie, series and personality files.[4] The site has been online since April 1st, 2000 and belongs to Webedia.[5][6]
Historical
[edit]The website was launched on April 1, 2000, and consisted of a database with information about movies and movie stars.[7] Later, news about the world of entertainment was added.[8] In 2003, AdoroCinema was in the final of the IBest Award and was voted one of the three best movie websites, according to the official jury. In 2005, it was again in the top three according to the popular jury.[8]
In August 2011, French mediatech Webedia became the owner of AdoroCinema.[9] The following year, the site underwent two layout redesigns: in February and November, new features and services were added, giving users the opportunity to interact with the platform, such as infographics on personalities' pages and the “Express Notes” section, in which readers could rate the films registered on AdoroCinema.
In 2015, the site entered into a partnership with the Terra news portal to distribute its content on the portal. In the same year, AdoroCinema created a function that allowed users to connect via their Facebook account. This way, they could also bookmark movie pages and personalities.
In November 2016, the portal adopted the slogan “Let's watch together”, with the intention of getting even closer to its movie-loving audience.[10] Along with the slogan came a new brand positioning following the sponsorship of Expocine 2016. The portal also adopted the slogan “Let's watch together”, with the intention of getting even closer to its cinephile audience.[11]
In February 2018, the portal held the AdoroCinema Awards, the biggest digital audiovisual awards on the Brazilian internet. The award received 162,000 votes from internet users. In April, in partnership with Warner and IGN Brasil, AdoroCinema promoted the film Ready Player One with a gameplay in the Webedia Arena and 16 invited micro-influencers .[12][13][14] In June, when the vertical's Instagram reached the 1 million followers mark, AdoroCinema was the first portal to produce exclusive content for the platform, with the daily program “Take do Dia”, for the - until then - new IGTV tool.[15] The content was published on the portal's website.[15]
In March 2019, AdoroCinema, in partnership with Universal Pictures for the release of the film Happy Death Day 2U, announced the AdoroCinema Impact product, an advertising model that aims to reach users as they browse the site through native content such as the trailer, the main element of the format, news and the film's technical sheet.[16] In April, the portal announced its rebranding, still under the motto “Let's watch together”, and restructured its editorial model and YouTube video grid with the launch of new original programs.[17] The “Take of the Day” program, launched the previous year, also reached 25 million views in the IGTV format. In September, AdoroCinema welcomed Rebecca Barbosa as its new commercial director.[18] That same year, the portal reached 2 million followers on Instagram, created its TikTok account, and was present with in-person coverage of the biggest film and pop culture festivals and events in the world.[17]
With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 and the paralysis of movie premieres, AdoroCinema is turning its editorial line to television programming and streaming for the public to watch at home.[19] In addition, all the production and recording of the video grid is adapted remotely. In May, AdoroCinema took part in SuperLiveNerd, produced by Omelete to raise donations for Gerando Falcões, an NGO that offers sport, culture and professional training to people from the favelas and outskirts of the city.[20]
In April 2021, still in a pandemic scenario, AdoroCinema produced its first major live remote covering the Oscar awards.[21] The same year also saw the implementation of native integration buttons on movie and series listings, a service with redirects to the main streaming platforms available in Brazil, a feature for the user in addition to the service of the nearest movie theater sessions.
In 2022, the portal once again produced its Oscar live stream with 4 hours of transmission and coverage of the awards from the red carpet.[22] Also during 2022, AdoroCinema ran a campaign with Perdigão to promote the film Minions: The Rise of Gru, and was present at the 24th edition of the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival, covering the entire film showcase.[23][24] This was also the year that the portal included soap operas in its portfolio of works in partnership with the Globoplay streaming service.[25] AdoroCinema also won the Jury Academy Award at iBest 2022 in the “Cinema, TV and Streaming” category.[26] Closing out the year, the site produced its first retrospective for TikTok, in partnership with the network, pointing out all the highlights in the audiovisual world.[27]
