It looks to me as the Category:Novels has been "sorted" / "depopulated" of actual novel articles. Category:Mystery novels is now nearly done, a re-run of that would be nice to check we have everything. SO, this leaves this with option of adding other "genres" or scanning other categories such as "yyyy novels". Could you try adding Category:Satirical novels, Category:Romance novels, Category:Political novels, Category:Western novels, Category:War novels or any others that appear worth doing. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 08:23, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Forgot where we got to with this one, Might be good to re-run this as in the newer style and existing criteria and see what it produces. If there are any obvious "categories" we can mine then we can doo that later perhaps. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 08:23, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

I can see this is being used to trial a few things, but how far away is the version that actually "does what it says on the tin". Also are you near a stage when we can publish our plans on the newsletter. Sorry to press but it would be really good to get this moving again. Thanks for your efforts. Please say if I am expecting too much. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 08:23, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Book stubs to Novel stubs - New format (section) - think this section is fine - also think the threshold should go up to 500 words. Other than that let's go with this pretty much how it is. Thanks :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 10:33, 4 July 2006 (UTC)-
Responded with: yes I will put the infobox complete today. Will move the book to novel to the proper page, And sorry for the delay, I was waiting on you to respond. Eagle talk 15:53, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for that I will probably publish the newsletter tomorrow morning (based in UK). I fyou want to adjust the message on the auto lists or other thing do so by then!. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 16:02, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
On the input front, I must admit I would have more to imput if I had more idea what your selection criteria are currently, and what problems you have grappled with. This would give me (and anyone else) somemeat to chew on - as it were. You could record your current criteria somewhere that we (ie. anyone really interested) could see them. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 16:02, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Help

[edit]

You responded to an editor requesting help. However, he was informing you of facts that are not correct. Now he removes my comment on this.[1] Evidently this is unusual behaviour.Nomen NescioGnothi seauton 10:43, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Sorry I thought the link was sufficient, but this it what I refer to User_talk:Zer0faults#WP:POINT.Nomen NescioGnothi seauton 03:19, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
Not that I know of, but there is one against him. Untill now I did not comment on it in an attempt to prevent more anymosity, however his recent behaviour towards me (see the helme note) makes me think outside intervention may be the only answer. My comment here was only to inform you that his note was not entirely neutral and lacked important facets of our confrontations. This misrepresenting the facts is the principal problem I have with this user.Nomen NescioGnothi seauton 03:38, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
Don't let it get to you. If I were you, I would make a small comment about the removal of the comment and provide the diff. Do so in a nuetral and polite manner (as you have been doing) and you will be fine. If you need helf with this, feel free to ask me. Eagle talk 03:47, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Might I ask you to take a look at this and ask you to help out? Perhaps you could find a solution. However, should you decline that is OK.Nomen NescioGnothi seauton 20:24, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

Incomplete List

[edit]

Thanks for doing all the work for this, in answer to you ISBN question:

United Kingdom in 1966 by the booksellers and stationers W H Smith and originally called Standard Book Numbering or SBN (still used in 1974). It was adopted as international standard ISO 2108 in 1970. This is from the ISBN article. Should I use 1966 or 1970?

I would go with 1966 and be more inclusive in the list. A note at the head of the list in explanation / guidance might help. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 07:45, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Regional Municipality of Peel, Ontario mediation

[edit]

We're not getting very many signups for the mediation case. Should I/we post messages to the users requesting their attention to the matter? --AbsolutDan (talk) 04:42, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Don't worry about it, by the looks of the drastitic improvement since I step in... this case may be closed soon. Eagle talk 07:43, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
Yes I have been working to cite the content in the article, however I'm still chasing an edit war -- the section about the conflict is simply, in effect, a revert to a previous version. One editor removed WikiDoo's insertion completely, adding a shorter version of it to a different article (see the "oops" section), and another editor re-incorporated the 2 paragraphs that WikiDoo did not like. Since the current version does present both viewpoints I went ahead and cited both sides last night, but I fear that once WD sees this he will revert again. Time will tell though, I suppose... --AbsolutDan (talk) 14:13, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
P.S. I know setting the archive bot to a shorter timeframe would shorten the page length... I'm thinking about dropping it down some. Probably not as low as you have it, as sometimes I have discussions that span weeks and I like to keep them together... thanks for the suggestion though --AbsolutDan (talk) 14:21, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Template thing

[edit]

The template FrankB is bemoaning is {{Category redirect|Books available as e-books}}; I don't know if anything can be done about it, and fortunately there are fewer than 100 items in it. I can do that standing on my head. <g> The novels list is truly awesome. In light of the hard work y'all are putting in, I will promise to try and create a complete infobox for the articles I split off in the films-based-on-books project. Back to my (real) job for a bit...! Cheers, Her Pegship 16:38, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

VandalProof problem

Hi Eagle,

around the end of may you invited me to use VandalProof, and I did for a time without problems. However, having come back to the project after a short break (for exams) I now find myself unable to login to Vandalproof. can you shed any light on the subject?

  • Thanks on the 'nice catch', but it wasn't... I'm really the only one adding content in that series. I was just twitting you since you twigged on my template somehow.
See my last answer to Pegship interleaved on my talk. You guys got to figure out which cats book templates should go into, and it looks like the one you left beats the one she left hands down... so now we re-edit. (Same ole wiki-day!). // FrankB 22:55, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
Yah - I get how cite book is meant to be used, but do you get that since it's about books, that someone may expect to find it in one of the categories about books? Better yet, all the main cats about same. I haven't done a lot of footnoting as I'm more into fillng in (sometimes astonishing) gaps of younger editors san my years, so I took a while to realize the actual usage of the template. One of my pet peeves... poor documentation on purposes and usages in a lot of places. Starting with most categories pages (e.g. category:Shared universe— the person who created it hasn't been active in a long while, so I sent them an email last night since it showed up on something I do edit... 1632 series.), and most templates (That at least has historical system software as a causal factor! It wasn't possible until roughly a year ago. SO ... I document for the next editor e.g.Category:Middle Ages and children) To do otherwise, is to steal time from our co-editors, IMHO!

btw- I reactivated the Wikiproject:Book Series per Peg's suggestion. Can use someone to look over things and add 'standards' from the parent projects - Books and Novels. Get your two cents worth in on the Books notability guideline proposal. Best! // FrankB 00:25, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

I'm talking cat... as in show up in a cat where another editor can see the tool... you're talking to usage... which is (almost) irrelavant until and unless you have a need. But if you don't know about it, how can you use it. That's all I'm saying. // FrankB 01:11, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
See example: {{commonscat4}} etc. You can put a ton of cats inside noinclude blocks, just as you can add such usage notes. OTOH, {{commonscat2}} and '4' do add an overt category when used. But, {{commonscat1Ra}} does not... yet all are in the same 'template list' categorys. Q.E.D. It's a matter of visibility. Hmmmm, I better get that usage template finished! ttfn // FrankB 02:53, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Films that are also novels issue

[edit]

Hi Eagle, and thanks! I am checking the list now for false hits and find that several items are showing up which showed up in previous searches. I know why, too: They're not based on books, so I didn't add the "split comment" to the article. Yet the program finds them again because of the "trip words" in the text, which I assume are words like "book", "novel", "based on" etc. My suggestion: Can the program exclude articles with the word "novelization" or "novelisation" in the text? That might eliminate some of the repeated false hits. Either that, or come up with an alternative "split comment" phrase, such as <!--No book split necessary - Please do not remove this comment-->, which I can apply to those articles. Any thoughts? (P.S. I'm out of town sans Internet as well, until July 19, so no rush on this one. Have a good break.) Her Pegship 00:21, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Wikiproject Novels

[edit]

I got your message greeting me to Wikiproject novels; next time, could you sign your messages? Thank you for the pointer to your novels without infoboxes page, but the strategy I've been using (and will continue to use) is surf the novel categories and click on any random novel. 95% of the time, there is no infobox, but all necessary data is in either the article or Amazon.com usually. Nice to see you are hame and back at work. I think the criteria for isStub isNotStub are fine, we might adjust the word cound aspect later but it looks good for now. All the best. I trust the voluntary work was successful and fulfilling! :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 18:00, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Leave all at 450 for now - we can mark up the critera vergage at the head of each list with details of this watershed sometime. On the YYY novels issue put it in where you best think for now (amy even be best as a seperate list - not sure) and we can adjust how it appears later. Always difficult to design in a vacumn. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 18:17, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
On the subject of creating others lists (particularly for other Novels users), yeh go ahead if they appear reasonable just do it. Although I do a lot I don't have a monopoly on these things. What I would say is if we create a list let a few know, the requester, myself and maybe one or two other regulars; we can iron out any problems (if any) and only then (maybe) add it to the official set of lists. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 07:28, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Cat:year novels

[edit]

I was wondering if it is possible to make a list of those novels that have {{Infobox Book}}, but aren't listed in the various year novel categories? I keep running across a novel every so often that doesn't have one.Grey Shadow 07:27, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Reply to User talk:Grey Shadow #Cat:_year_novels
I'm not sure how to go about finding them. (Which is why I asked.<g>) I'd probably do a search with paramaters to include of {{infobox book}} and a Category that included a four digit number. I didn't even think of working with the "what links here" link. While I was at it, I'd also do a search that includes "page titles that included (book)" so we have a list we can work on to change to "page title (novel)". Does that make any sense? Grey Shadow 15:27, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
The list looks great! Just what I was looking for! Thanks. Will starting working on them now. Grey Shadow 00:50, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

name(book) to name(novel)

[edit]

In regards to second idea, "page titles that include (book)". I did a quick look at the Category:Science fiction novels and found Colony (book) and Cradle (book). As they are novels, we should get around to moving them to Colony (novel) and Cradle (novel). I've noticed that Kevin has moved a couple, but if we had a list it would be easier to work with. There may be some non-novels in the bunch which we could recat rather than miss-rename. Does that make sense? Grey Shadow 01:19, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

I'd look for novels, so anything that has a {Cat:YYYY novels} cat that has in it's title the word "(book)". Once we get everything in a YYYY novel cat, we should be able to find them all. Grey Shadow 01:18, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
You could also include in the search that if the result has {Cat:YYYY books} to disregard. Grey Shadow 01:25, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Big categories

[edit]

Category:Broadcasting stubs, Australian broadcasting stubs, Music stubs. Enjoy :) --JD[don't talk|email] 01:45, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

I noticed your comments about the cleanup and stub tags. I couldn't find a good stub either. The Yorkshire stubs are split up into {{NorthYorkshire-geo-stub}}, {{SouthYorkshire-geo-stub}}, and {{WestYorkshire-geo-stub}}, and none of those fit, so I ended up putting {{England-geo-stub}}.

Also, there are more specific cleanup messages, such as {{wikify-date}}, {{inappropriate tone}}, {{confusing}}, {{intro length}}, etc. These are more specific as to what needs to be done to the article, instead of just "it needs to be cleaned up". You can see a full list at Wikipedia:Template messages/Cleanup. Have a great day and happy editing! ~ Amalas rawr =^_^= 18:07, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Ah, sorry for assuming you didn't know about WP:TC. I figure, better to be helpful and provide information just in case they don't know instead of being critical and assuming they're dumb.
Good luck with the cleanup, even if it is a year late... =P ~ Amalas rawr =^_^= 18:13, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

stubs for zoos

[edit]

Hi. you aked about "what stub is used for zoos and parks?" these use the geography stub relating to where the zoos and parks are (in the case of Navajo Nation Zoo and Botanical Park it was {{arizona-geo-stub}}). and ive restubbed Deifr (in the message before this one) to {{EastRiding-geo-stub}} and {{UK-hist-stub}}, since its as much a history thing as an east yorkshire thing. Follow on from Cat:year novels

[edit]

From previous discusion at User talk:Eagle 101#Cat:year novels

24: One Shot is on the list you made up. This one is already listed in the {cat:YYYY books} and {cat:graphic novels} cats. I'll keep looking. Grey Shadow 03:33, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Interesting question. As graphic novels are not part of the WikiProject Novels, I left those that I found in the {cat:YYYY books} and didn't change them to {cat:YYYY novels}. Thinking about it more, while they may not come under the Project, I really should have moved them as they are novels. Grey Shadow 03:50, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
But are they, just because the title they use is "Graphic novel" does that make them a novel. In the same way, Some refer to "comic" in magazine form as "comic books" (a Coloquilism as far as I am aware) does not make them true books. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 10:26, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
I see your point. Not all fiction works are novels, but all novels are fiction. In library terms, a comic book is not a book, but a periodical. OK, I revise my opinion & concur that they should go under {cat:YYYY books} for now. Her Pegship 17:40, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
Ok, so I should make sure that graphic novels are not hit in the future? (p.s. can we move this conversation to a project page, this is a wiki after all!) —— Eagle (ask me for help) 17:53, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Research Survey Request

[edit]

Hello, I am a member of a research group at Palo Alto Research Center (formerly known as Xerox PARC) studying how conflicts occur and resolve on Wikipedia. Due to your experience in conflict resolution on Wikipedia (e.g., as a member of the Mediation Cabal) we’re extremely interested in your insights on this topic. We have a survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=400792384029 which we are inviting a few selected Wikipedians to participate in, and we would be extremely appreciative if you would take the time to complete it. As a token of our gratitude, we would like to present you with a PARC research star upon completion. Thank you for your time.
