I believe that it is the versatility and flexibility of English that has given it its currently enjoyed status as the lingua franca of the current era. As such, local varieties of English, be it American, Australian, Denglisch or Singlish have their valid place in the world.
However, those local varieties can only be used as long as the opposite party understands the semantics of the entire communication. Therefore, while highlighting the importance of dialects and creoles, the command of proper English can never be discounted. This is especially true with written English, where one may not be able to predict the linguistic background of the entire audience. With the advent and widespread usage of text- and instant- messaging, however, the line between written, formal language and informal language has become so blurred that some are struggling to use forms of English that can be readily understood by most audiences, whether be it in the spoken or written medium. Sadly, this occurrence is not only limited to non-native speakers. In other words, Y U NO UNDERSTOOD ME??!
This user humbly recognises that even perfect English will not rescue anyone from the gates of hell as it is not known whether Satan speaks English.[citation needed]
