History

GoCardless was founded by Oxford graduates Hiroki Takeuchi, Tom Blomfield and Matt Robinson in 2011. It launched its product in February 2012 in the UK[8].

GoCardless has received funding from Y Combinator[6], [7], [8], Adams Street Partners, Accel, Balderton Capital, GV, Notion Capital, Passion Capital, Salesforce Ventures, and in February 2019 secured $75M to launch in America[9],[10],[11].

Blomfield left the business in 2013 and later founded Monzo. Robinson left in 2015 to set up Nested but remains on the board[12].

In September 2019, GoCardless was ranked 41st in the The Sunday Times Hiscox Tech Track 100 league table, which ranks Britain’s 100 private tech companies with the fastest-growing sales over their latest three years[13].

In October 2019, GoCardless was listed as one of the top 50 Y Combinator companies by valuation[14].

In November 2019, GoCardless and TransferWise announced a partnership to create a global network for businesses to collect recurring payments from customers located around the world[15]. GoCardless also reached a milestone of being used by 50,000 businesses globally[18], including Bulb, DocuSign and TripAdvisor[20][21].

International payments - Businesses can use GoCardless to collect payments from 30+ countries, with or without having local bank accounts in those countries. Foreign currency exchange, powered by TransferWise, is built into the product.
API - Developers can use GoCardless’ API to integrate bank debit payment processing into their website or app.
