Speech
[edit]"Address of President Manuel L. Quezon on Policies and Achievements of the Government and Regeneration of the Filipino"[2]
The speech was delivered on 19th of August, 1938 at José Rizal Memorial Field and the very message of Manuel Quezon's speech was to show us Filipino citizens how important the people are to their nation. He compared and contrasted the various traits of the Filipinos back then and the Filipinos right now and has learned that our values and morals we had in the past have been deteriorating in exchange for more selfish ideals. These ideals, according to him, will destroy the country and its identity if the nation lets it go on. That is why he wanted to "regenerate" our way of life and push to be a stronger and more selfless nation that can stand on its own.
The Traits of Filipinos
[edit]Positive Traits[3]
- HOSPITALITY
This is one of the most well-known Filipino traits. One of the most popular ability of the Filipinos is their ability to support others. Foreign tourists are always taken aback by the warm welcome they receive from the Filipinos. Filipinos always want to give the best effort to their visitors and make them feel at home. It is a certain kind of belief structure that's been used for a long time.
- RESPECTFULNESS
Respect is very visible in Filipinos, this is something that people of all ages notice, not just by the younger ones. Filipinos use "po" and "opo" when answering and talking with their elders in order to show respect. Mostly of the children shows respect by putting their elders' hands on their forehead as a sign of greetings, this is called "Mano".
- STRONG FAMILY TIES
Filipinos place such a high value on their families . They want to get intact with their families through the generations.
- BRAVERY
Filipinos are known for their courage and eagerness. They are not afraid to fight for what they believe in and for their rights. They have a huge eagerness to achieve and accomplish their goals and desires. GENEROSITY AND
- HELPFULNESS
Filipinos are very generous people. They rather give than to receive. Even if they only have a little amount, they don't hesitate to share it with those who are in need. "Bayanihan" is a Filipino culture that shows helping one another in order to lessen the workload and to make the job easier.
Negative Traits[4]
- MAÑANA HABIT
Mañana habit is synonymous to the Filipino expression "Mamaya na" which shows procastination. This is a Filipino custom of leaving for tomorrow the task that can be done today. It is a habit that shows tendency to put off decisions for later, resulting in less accomplishments.
- CRAB MENTALITY
This mindset is very common among Filipinos, especially when they are feeling insecure. In certain cases, the Crab Mentality encourages unhealthy rivalry. Filipinos spend too much of their time jn backbiting instead of doing things that will help them to become better. Crab Mentality is their way of diverting attention away from their own inadequacy by dwelling on other people's business.
Filipino Traits Then and Now There is a truth to Manuel L. Quezon's statement toward the Filipinos in the present. Even when he delivered his speech a long time ago, it still applies today. There have been many cases of corruption in our government and crimes in our society all because we have grown to be greedier and more self-serving. Power and money makes us take advantage of others for our own benefit. On the other hand, we have also grown to be much more sympathetic and understanding too. Social media has given us more chances to connect and understand others and because of that we have more opportunities to learn or grow. Filipinos haven't grown to be much worse or much better than our ancestors. Instead, our traits, both positive and negative, have been intensified and have been given more methods to show themselves.
