Future Processing (FP) is a Polish IT company based in Gliwice that produces specialised software[1] for international commerce, industry and services and sells it to clients from across the world, mainly form Great Britain[2][3][4][5], Germany and Nordic countries.

Future Processing history[edit]

The company was established in 2000 by Jarosław Czaja[6]. As of 2021, Future Processing (FP) has almost 1000 employees and its main office is located in Gliwice[7][8]. FP's business success largely results from the company's philosophy[9], which is summarised in its motto: "Great software... because we put people first". FP has developed its own approach to cooperation with clients, called "The Future Processing Way"[10], based on five elements: technical expertise[11], predictable and high-quality delivery[12], trustworthy partnership[13], operational agility[14], and strong work ethic[15].

2000[edit]

Future Processing was founded in Bytom in 2000[16] by Anna Pater and Jarosław Czaja as Future Processing Anna Pater. Its first product was SkyNavigator – software that helps looking for non-stellar objects on sky images. In the same year, FP signed a contract for creating software to control the apparatus of the Silesian Planetarium in Chorzów. Before the renovation of the Planetarium, which started in 2018, all the shows presented there were automatically controlled by a computer using software developed by FP[17].

In 2008, FP signed another contract with a British company, this time in the insurance sector. In September, due to the growing number of employees, the company moved its main office to Nowe Gliwice, an education and business centre run by GAPR (Upper Silesian Agency for Entrepreneurship and Development)[18].

In 2009, Future Processing established cooperation with a publishing house from London and two other clients. In April, FP organised its first 24-hour programming competition, Deadline 24[19]. It was organised in collaboration with the Silesian University of Technology and it was the first competition of this type in Poland[19].

FP organised the first edition of the World Usability Day[20] (WUD Silesia) – a conference focused on the subject of usability and user experience[21]. In 2012, FP opened another building in the FPark, Future Two[22]. In the same year, the first editions of the Quality Excites[23] and Future Dev Day[24] conferences were held.

In 2016, FP entered into a partnership with Microsoft as part of the CityNext initiative[25][26].

In February, Future Processing changed from a limited liability company into a joint stock company. Tomasz Ciapała and Mikołaj Gwóźdź formed the Management Board, and Michał Sztanga became its President.

Future Processing competencies[edit]

In the 20+ years of its operation, the company has completed over 500 IT projects[27] in the following technologies:

The team has developed the following competencies (selection):

  • Machine Learning[41]
  • Back-end
  • Front-end
  • Mobile[42]
  • Analysis & Design[43]

Future Processing organisational culture[edit]

Future Processing puts emphasis on transparency[44], free information flow, and caring for the team members, following the teal management approach[45]. The company supports its employees by providing them with access to a day care centre, leisure facilities, a restaurant, and L&D resources[46]. The FPAcademy was created to ensure L&D opportunities to engineers and managers[47]. FP has an amply equipped library which offers over 2000 books and e-books (as of December 2020).

Startnearshoring.com[edit]

Start Nearshoring is an educational platform for managers who wish to start outsourcing software development. It features numerous articles, guidebooks, and analytical tools. The website is available in English and German[48].

One of the most popular guides explores how to write an RFP for software development. The article defines an RFP template[49], covers what needs to be included in the document for IT projects, and shares useful templates and good practices.

Cooperation with universities[edit]

Quality Assurance (QA) specialisation[edit]

In cooperation with the academic staff members of the University of Silesia, FP launched Poland’s first Quality Assurance specialisation as part of the IT programme at the Faculty of Science and Technology[50].

FP labs[edit]

In 2013, the company donated PLN 66,000 for a computer laboratory at the Faculty of Computer Science and Materials Science[51] at the University of Silesia in Sosnowiec[52].

In December 2013, another laboratory funded by FP was opened at the Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics and Computer Science[53] at the Silesian University of Technology[53]. The laboratory is equipped with 27 computer workstations with 21-inch monitors and two projectors. It is used for programming classes[54][55]. The total cost of the laboratory was PLN 100,000.

Best Practices in Software Development  [edit]

A series of free-of-charge lectures and workshops for young software developers organised by FP specialists, who share their knowledge with participants and present various aspects of the software design process. The classes take place at the Silesian University of Technology and the University of Silesia[56]. The first edition was held in 2014 at the Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics and Computer Science[53] of the Silesian University of Technology[57].

Student internships[edit]

For many years, starting from 2012, Future Processing offered summer student internship programmes. Its goal was to make students acquainted with the world of IT and software development. FP has been appreciated numerous times in the competition for the best companies offering internship programmes in the region of Silesia (Praktykodawca Roku Województwa Śląskiego), organised by the University of Silesia in Katowice: the team received the first prize in 2014 and 2016 and the honourable mention in 2015[58]. The subjects of the training period were adjusted to the needs of participants. For two months, the participants, supervised by two mentors and almost 20 coaches, learned modelling, analysis, design, selection of architecture, coding, testing, refactoring, test-driven development, and other best practices of software development. Apart from the technical skills, students also learned teamwork, communication, and creative thinking[59].

Offices[edit]

The company has four locations:

F4 building, part of FP campus.

Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, everyone at FP switched to the remote work mode within 24 hours[71]. Several internal actions were conducted, such as webinars on stress management, a photo competition with prizes, whose main theme was #stayathome, and the creation of colouring books for FP kids by the Design Department.

The following initiatives were introduced to support the employees:

  • producing company face masks to be used in public spaces for protection
