Reza Servati (born January 2, 1984, in Tehran) is an Iranian playwright, director, theater actor, and dance choreographer. He was graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Dramatic Literature from the Islamic Azad University, Tonekabon branch, and a Master's degree in Directing from Tarbiat Modares University. He is known as one of the prominent theater directors in Iran.

Career

Reza Servati began his career by working on the arrangement and design of installations at the "Underground" exhibition by Siamak Filizadeh  in 2005.Then, from the year 2007, as a student activity, he became engaged in directing the following works:

He began his professional career as a dramaturge and director for "Macbeth " in 2007.In June and July 2012, he participated in the international section of the Fajr Theater Festival with the performance of "Macbeth " and also took part in academic research seminars and the performance of Macbeth in cities such as Amsterdam, Batumi, Tbilisi, Poti, Chiatura (Georgia), Turin, and Bologna.        

Awards

 He achieved two titles of Outstanding Student of the Year at the undergraduate level from Azad University, Tonekabon branch, and was honored with a certificate of appreciation and a commendation plaque as an outstanding student at the master's level from Tarbiat Modares University. He was also selected as the director for Macbeth at the 12th International University Theater Festival in Iran.

Additionally, he was selected as the writer and director in the 10th International University Theater Festival in Iran, as well as being chosen as the writer and director in the regional festival in Mashhad and the festival in Mazandaran Toranj festival for his work inexhausted. He won a special prize from the judging panel for his outstanding and impactful direction and design of the play Macbeth at the 28th Fajr International Theater Festival. His production was selected as the festival's top performance and won a special prize from the judging panel for his direction of the play woyzeck.

In 2016, Reza Servati decided to use the translation by Dariush Ashoori among the available translations in the market. He chose this translation, because Ashoori had effectively captured the rhythm, rhymes, and poetic aspects of Shakespeare's language.

This director did not use realism in his production, and everything that was supposed to be conveyed was through gestures, figures, and positions that the actors displayed on stage. Another part relied on the poetic and imagery aspect of language, which conveyed the meanings.

In this production, there is a completely masculine space, and instead of Lady Macbeth, a man plays her role, and the role of the witches is also played by men. Because, in his point of view, Lady Macbeth is far from the typical feminine emotions in the original version, she makes logical decisions, and her conscience does not torment her. She is resolute in the decisions she makes, even more than Macbeth.

One of the additions the director made to the production is the image of a fetus in the womb, which is a visual element that stands out in the scene a couple of times. This is so because both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth desire to secure the throne for their own dynasty and ensure its stability. The fetus symbolizes Lady Macbeth's yearning for motherhood, and she presents the absence of a child to Macbeth several times.It is as if the lack of offspring reflects on Macbeth's infertility.          

Reza Servati's performance of Macbeth is a performance that is based on the creation of images from the play and is satisfied with the minimal speech of the play. By removing many scenes from the play, wherever possible, he has filled the void by replacing some images. In this way, he has used a number of cinematographic techniques and by using the light and stage design of the play, he has put those techniques to use. In general, Servati’s skillful integration of diverse visuals not only prevents audience fatigue but also invites them to revel in the delight of encountering original, fully realized scenes, integral to the performance.
