"Summer is Over" is a song written and recorded by American singer-songwriter Jon McLaughlin for his self-released third studio album, Forever If Ever (2011). It served as the first promotional single from the album.[1] The song was re-recorded to feature vocals by fellow American singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles for the album's major label reissue, titled Promising Promises (2012). The version with Bareilles was released through Razor & Tie as the album's lead single on January 10, 2012.[2]
Background and composition[edit]
"Summer is Over" is a piano-based pop rock ballad about the inevitably of certain things in life coming to an end. The song was written by McLaughlin for a friend who had recently experienced a heartbreaking break up and uses changing of seasons as a metaphor for a once-promising relationship fading.[3] It was initially recorded as a solo for Forever If Ever and was re-recorded as a duet with Sara Bareilles for the Promising Promises reissue.
