The 2025 8 Hours of Sebring was an endurance sports car race held at Sebring International Raceway near Sebring, Florida on 12 April 2025. It as wthe first round of the 2025–26 FIA World Endurance Championship, and the first of three rounds of the American Endurance Cup.[1]

The FIA WEC announced their calendar for the re-instated super season during the 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans weekend, with the 8 Hours of Sebring being the opening round.[2] Returning for the first time since 2023, the race now ran over 8 hours, instead of the 1000 miles it ran previously. It was the fourth year the race is part of the FIA WEC. The 8 Hours of Sebring was the first of nine scheduled sports car endurance races by the FIA, and the first of three races on the American Endurance Cup (AEC).[2] The race took place at the 6.019 km (3.740 mi) Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida, on 12 April 2025.[2]

Success ballast

Since this was the first race of the season, success ballast was not used. All cars were be held at their base weight of 1065 kilograms. For the first time in WEC history, the FIA and ACO published lap time predictions for both classes: lap times for the Hypercar class were set for 1 minute, 50 seconds, and in LMGT3, they were set at around 2 minutes.[3]

Entry list

The entry list was published on 29 March 2025, and consisted of 40 entries: 22 in Hypercar and 18 in LMGT3. In Hypercar, Sébastien Bourdais replaced full-season entrant Álex Palou in the No. 2 Cadillac Racing entry, due to the latter having IndyCar obligations.[4] All other entries were the same as on the full-season entry list.[5]

Practice

Three practice sessions were held: two on Thursday and one on Friday. The sessions on Thursday afternoon and Thursday evening lasted 90 minutes. The session on Friday afternoon lasted 60 minutes.[9]

Practice 1

The first practice session took place at 13:00 EDT on Thursday and ended with Paul di Resta being fastest in the No. 94 Peugeot TotalEnergies Peugeot, with a lap time of 1:51.119. Second-quickest was James Calado in the No. 51 Ferrari AF Corse Ferrari, 0.337s slower than di Resta. In third was Callum Ilott in the No. 23 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin, 0.551s slower than di Resta.[10] In LMGT3, Kei Cozzolino was quickest in the No. 88 Proton Competition Ford, with a lap time of 2:02.157. He was 0.103s quicker than second-placed Grégoire Saucy in the No. 59 United Autosports McLaren, with Kimi Räikkönen in the No. 55 Vista AF Corse Ferrari in third.[10]

Practice 2

The second practice session took place at 19:00 EDT on Thursday. Ferdinand Habsburg was quickest in the No. 35 Alpine Endurance Team Alpine, with a lap time of 1:50.146. He was 0.722s quicker than Louis Delétraz in the No. 77 Acura TF Sport Acura, with Jean-Éric Vergne in the No. 93 Peugeot in third.[13] In LMGT3, André Lotterer was quickest in the No. 3 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin, with a lap time of 2:00.934. The pair of Manthey Racing Porsches finished in second and third, with Klaus Bachler in the No. 92 Porsche finishing ahead of Richard Lietz in the No. 91 Porsche.[13] The session saw one stoppage, when the No. 50 Ferrari of Nicklas Nielsen suddenly lost power.[14]

Final practice

The third and final practice session took place at 13:00 EDT on Friday. Kévin Estre was quickest in the No. 5 Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche, with a lap time of 1:50.823. He was 0.079s quicker than Ritomo Miyata in the No. 7 Toyota Gazoo Racing Toyota. Mike Rockenfeller finished third in the No. 66 Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Ford.[17] In LMGT3, Marco Wittmann was quickest in the No. 31 Team WRT BMW. He had a fastest lap of 2:01.158. Second-quickest was Michelle Gatting in the No. 85 Iron Dames Lamborghini, with Ben Barker in the No. 89 Ford in third.[17]

Qualifying

Qualifying started at 18:00 EDT. The first session was for LMGT3 cars, whilst the second session was for Hypercars. The top ten fastest qualifiers in round 1 advanced to the Hyperpole round. The first Hyperpole session was for LMGT3 cars. Arnold Robin took pole in the No. 78 Akkodis ASP Team Lexus, with a time of 1:58.765. Satoshi Hoshino was second-quickest in the No. 777 D'station Racing Aston Martin, 0.050s slower, whilst Sarah Bovy finished third in the No. 85 Lamborghini.[20] The second Hyperpole session was for Hypercars. Nicki Thiim took pole position in the Valkyrie's first race in the No. 23 Aston Martin, with a lap of 1:46.521. James Calado was second in the No. 51 Ferrari, 0.148s slower. Antonio Fuoco was third-quickest in the No. 50 Ferrari.[21]

Race

Start and early hours

The race commenced at 12:00 EDT on Saturday under clear skies, witnessing Nyck de Vries' No. 7 Toyota surging to the lead from sixth place, closely followed by Valentin Hasse-Clot in the No. 27 Aston Martin and Edoardo Mortara in the No. 63 Lamborghini Iron Lynx Lamborghini.[24] In LMGT3, Josh Caygill's No. 95 McLaren took an early lead but faced fierce competition from Ian James' No. 3 Aston Martin.[25] Jenson Button's No. 38 Hertz Team Jota Porsche briefly claimed the lead before the first pit-stop cycle allowed Robert Shwartzman to take the lead in the No. 83 AF Corse Ferrari, pursued by the No. 7 Toyota and the Alpines.[24]

Despite initial challenges from the No. 7 Toyota, the No. 83 Ferrari maintained its lead, evenutally asserting dominance with Robert Kubica taking over the wheel, securing a substantial advantage after after subsequential pit stops.[26][27] The pole-sitting No. 23 Aston Martin fell down to last place in the Hypercar class. In LMGT3, the No. 88 Ford of Cozzolino seized the lead ahead of the No. 82 Chevrolet of Kamui Kobayashi and the No. 55 Ferrari of Heriau.[27]

Afternoon to sunset

Following a gripping battle on-track battle, both Alpines managed to succesfully overtake the No. 93 Peugeot, relegating the Peugeot to fifth while the Alpines surged ahead. However, Nico Müller's Peugeot crew executed a perfect pit stop to leapfrog the No. 36 Alpine of Kelvin van der Linde, before being almost immediately overtaken again by Van der Linde.[28] In LMGT3, the No. 55 Ferrari of Räikkönen overtook the No. 82 Chevrolet of Kobayashi. The No. 777 Aston Martin of Romain Dumas, however, spun out, dropping the car to the bottom of the standings.[28]

After a new pit stop cycle, the No. 93 Peugeot managed to jump both Alpines this time, only to lose both positions again, thirty minutes later. The No. 12 Porsche of Ilott set a new fastest lap of the race as the track cooled down.[29] In LMGT3, Mikkel O. Pedersen in the No. 88 Ford established a commanding lead over his rivals, with the No. 82 Chevrolet overtaking the No. 55 Ferrari once more.[29]

Sunset to finish

The No. 83 Ferrari of Alessio Rovera kept a sizeable lead over the No. 7 Toyota of Mike Conway, whilst the No. 36 Alpine of Van der Linde jumped the No. 35 Alpine of Matthieu Vaxivière for third, with the No. 93 Peugeot still in fifth. With 22 minutes to go, Rovera had a lead of 17.6 seconds over Conway, and a 1 minute, 18.9-second lead over Van der Linde.[30]

After eight hours of racing, the No. 83 AF Corse Ferrari of Robert Kubica, Alessio Rovera, and Robert Shwartzman proved dominant, finishing 20.1 seconds ahead of the No. 7 Toyota Gazoo Racing Toyota of Mike Conway, Ritomo Miyata, and Nyck de Vries. The No. 36 Alpine Endurance Team Alpine of Kelvin van der Linde, André Negrão, and Mick Schumacher finished third, 1 minute and 21.7 seconds down. The No. 93 Peugeot and No. 35 Alpine completed the top five.[31] The No. 88 Proton Competition Ford of Kei Cozzolino, Mikkel O. Pedersen, and Giorgia Roda won the LMGT3 class, a full lap ahead of the No. 82 TF Sport – AO Chevrolet of Gunnar Jeannette, Kamui Kobayashi, and Hiroshi Koizumi. The No. 55 Vista AF Corse Ferrari of François Heriau, Simon Mann, and Kimi Räikkönen finished third in class, whilst the No. 92 Porsche and No. 46 BMW finished fourth and fifth.[31]

Post-race

Since it was the first race of the season, Kubica, Rovera, and Shwartzman led the Drivers' Hypercar World Championship with 38 points each, eleven ahead of Conway, Miyata, and De Vries in second place. Fifteen points behind are Van der Linde, Negrão, and Schumacher in third. In LMGT3, Cozzolino, Pedersen, and Roda claimed the lead of the Drivers' LMGT3 Trophy with 38 points each, eleven ahead of Jeannette, Kobayashi, and Koizumi in second. Four points behind them are Heriau, Mann, and Räikkönen in third.[32]

The Manufacturers' Hypercar World Championship is led by Toyota with 38 points, eleven ahead of Alpine in second place and fifteen ahead of Peugeot in third. The Hypercar World Cup is led by the No. 83 Ferrari with 38 points, eleven points ahead of the No. 12 Porsche and fifteen ahead of the No. 38 Porsche. The Manufacturers' LMGT3 Trophy is led by the No. 88 Ford with 38 points, with the No. 82 Chevrolet in second and the No. 55 Ferrari in third.[32]
