The Mediation Committee (or MedCom) is a panel of editors who resolve disputes about the content of Wikipedia articles by providing formal mediation. The MedCom was established with the Arbitration Committee in January 2004 by Jimmy Wales and is the last stage of content-dispute resolution on the English Wikipedia. Formal mediation and the Mediation Committee are governed by the mediation policy.

Prerequisites

[edit]
Please read before requesting formal mediation
Formal mediation is the last step in content dispute resolution on the English Wikipedia. For that reason, before filing a request, the following conditions should be met.
  1. The dispute concerns the content of a Wikipedia article, template page, or image;
  2. The dispute does not relate directly to the conduct of a Wikipedia contributor;
  3. There has been substantial previous discussion of the disputed content;
  4. Have a look at this page, which lists other dispute resolution forums available for the resolving of disputes. Ensure you've tried using them first without success before coming here, because except in extraordinary cases, a request will be declined if other methods have not been attempted first. ;
  5. The parties to the dispute are contesting the relevant content with genuine motives to better the involved articles;
  6. There is no pending request for arbitration which relates to the dispute;
  7. There is no open Arbitration case which relates to the dispute.
  8. Every party is approaching mediation open-mindedly, with a view to compromising (for no mediation can be successful without compromise by all sides).

Nominations

[edit]

Membership of the Mediation Commitee is determined by a formal nomination process, where existing members will ask questions and examine the background of the candidate before deciding. You can find details of this process at User:Steven Zhang/MedCom/Nominations.

Contact

[edit]
To contact the Committee privately see this page.

The Committee maintains a private mailing list, called mediation-en-l (abbreviated to medcom-l), for internal discussion between its members. Editors who wish to contact the committee in private should direct their messages to the mailing list through the form at User:Mediation Committee.
