JordanPetersonVideos is a YouTube educational channel, with over 3 million subscribers, developed by Dr. Jordan Peterson. Videos and playlists cover a variety of focussed topics, presented in several different formats. Topics are generally centered around philosophy, academia and clinical psychology: personal, social, employment psychology, mental and physical well-being.
The channel has experienced a number of transformations since inception. The early majority of content came from his university course lectures for "Maps of Meaning", later "Personality and its Transformations", the formats have expanded to live-stream Q&A, special lectures, media interviews and conversations, and other recordings including video essays. Additional content is aggregated via playlists, bringing together Peterson's appearances on TV broadcasts from other YouTube channels.
Translations have been achieved in a few different ways. YouTube's automatic generation of subtitles and translation exist for many videos. Beyond the system generation, many videos have been translated by collaborators and volunteers. A condensed made-for-TV broadcast of the Maps of Meaning course was translated into Farsi, with baked-in subtitle overlays. Beyond the language settings per-video, other official channels exist specific to focus on other individual languages.
History
[edit]2013 - Creation
[edit]In March 2013, Peterson registered the channel JordanPetersonVideos,[1] and immediately began uploading recordings of lectures and interviews. Earliest dated recordings are from Harvard lectures, 1996. By the end of 2013, content on the channel included the lectures from Harvard, some interviews, and additional special lectures on two defining topics: "Tragedy vs Evil" and "Psychology as a career".
2014 - Experiments (Q&A, essays)
[edit]From early 2014, uploads include recordings from two of his classes at University of Toronto ("Personality and Its Transformations" and "Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief"),[2] special lectures ("Potential" for TEDx, "Death of the Oceans"), interviews, two experiments in Q&A format, and video essays, on Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil, and a response to an article by Conrad Black published in National Post.
2016 - Improvements and Funding
[edit]In March 2016, after three years of basic uploading of course videos, Peterson announced an interest to clean existing content and improve future content,[3] including a new experiment in crowdfunding through Patreon[3].
2016 - Growth
[edit]Growth was gradual, following from new awareness from TV appearances and social media content sharing. Yet, two events triggered major growth of awareness and subscribers and viewership.
In late September and early October 2016, a small number of video essays were released. These presented an exposition on increase of political correctness, with a particular focus on the recently-tabled Canadian parliamentary bill C-16. The essays went into details on the Human Rights tribunals, drew associations between provincial and federal enforcement processes. Particularly focussing on the environment of the University of Toronto, as an institution that regularly receives funding through governments, Peterson expressed grave concern about the future of quality education as may be affected by obstacles of a one-sided political nature.
2017 - Expanding projects
[edit]From early 2017, the funding increased dramatically. Peterson hired a production team to film his 2017 psychology lectures at the University of Toronto. 2017 marked the final year of "Maps of Meaning" and "Personality and its Transformations" course lectures being recorded and uploaded. Donations through Patreon increased, from $200 per month in March 2016, to $1,000 per month in August 2016 to $14,000 by January 2017; more than $50,000 per month by July 2017; and over $80,000 by May 2018.[4][5]
With this funding, a number of projects and lecture series were proposed: more interviews, regular live Q&A sessions, public lecture series on the Bible (Genesis through Revelation), conversations with Muslims in Canada and US, and an online university.
From May 2017 through December that year, a lecture series on biblical stories was recorded and released on YouTube.
A series of live Q&A events, appearing approximately monthly, were released beginning April 2017, through January 2018. Further projects beginning in January 2018 shifted live Q&A to an irregular schedule through 2019.
2017 - Account attack
[edit]In mid 2017, a Google system fault was exploited in a take-down attempt. This lead to a brief suspension of Peterson's Google account services including email, calendar, YouTube. The services were quickly restored.
2018 - Growth
[edit]A second period of growth began in January 2018, following publication of the new book 12 Rules for Life. In a lead-up to a book tour, several interviews were scheduled. One such interview with Channel 4 in UK was released in full, a 30-minute video. The interview "went viral", and the international public and media response lead to extreme increase in awareness. In three years, from 2018 through 2021, the video has been viewed 26.9 million times. In contrast, Peterson has had very-highly celebrated appearances on Joe Rogan Experience five times, between summer 2017 - summer 2018. From then until early 2021, each conversation with Joe Rogan has been viewed 10-12 million times.
The book tour expanded on new material from 12 Rules for Life, covering hundreds of cities in North America, Europe, England, New Zealand and Australia.
The international nature of the book tour enabled more international talks and interviews in person. Talks with former Australian politician John Anderson, comedian Russell Brand, philosopher Roger_Scruton, and interviews in UK, in Netherlands, Iceland, Australia, have been in person. One notable talk was with Dr Iain McGilchrist on his book The Master and His Emissary. Following the next year, April 2019, Jordan Peterson and Norman Doidge (the author of Foreword in 12 Rules for Life) were invited to a panel for the international premiere of a documentary on McGilchrist's book and work, The Divided Brain.
2019 - Hiatus
[edit]Regular donations at established funding levels were interrupted, severely reduced, in January 2019. With three videos, December 2018 through January, Peterson in dialog with Dave Rubin outlined the situation. During a live stream in January, Peterson deleted his Patreon account in public protest to the platform's controversial banning of another prominent content creator. The platform's move to ban was in support of a harassment campaign against the targeted creator, under the veneer of removing "hate speech". Subsequent reports and contrasts to other acts of terms of service enforcement on creators and lack thereof, lead to a response by many thousands of donors across the platform canceling their donor accounts, thus affecting major collateral damage across the platform's creator population.[6][7] Peterson has noted to have lost over 5000 (half) of his monthly donor base on Patreon, and with the first December 2018 video announcement, had placed a donation widget on his public web site as a new alternative. Peterson and Dave Rubin announced the creation of a new, free speech-oriented social networking and crowdfunding platform.[8]
Due to emergency events, scheduling of the book tour and regular releases of new recordings were suspended in summer 2019. During this time, pre-recorded conversations, interviews were released infrequently, along with some announcement videos recorded by Mikhaila Peterson. Some high-interest excerpts from previous unreleased lecture recordings, in one case Who Dares Say He Believes In God? in which Peterson responds to a single most-frequently-asked question with a full lecture (recorded in Sydney, 26 Feb 2019, released 8 Jun 2019)
2020 - Return Home
[edit]In October 2020, a video was posted to the channel with the title "Return Home", signalling the end of the hiatus.
The video received nearly a million views within the first few hours, and was trending on YouTube for a day. The video has received over 95,000 comments as of February 2021, and has been seen over 4 million times. The description of the video explains:
I have returned home to Toronto after spending much of the last eighteen months in hospitals. I am hoping that my health has improved to the point where I can start producing original content again. Thank you to all who are watching for your support over the course of this trying time. I hope that you all are coping with the COVID crisis successfully.
This coincides with an active return to content driven by a clinical psychological interests in personal and professional development, well-being, education.
2021
[edit]On 13 January 2019, during a live-stream Q&A, Peterson announced a new project, a follow-up book to 12 Rules for Life, entitled "Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life". During the haitus, Dr. Peterson worked to complete this, and a release date of March 2, 2021 was scheduled. To promote the book, and to mitigate any persisting public questions on the nature of health for future interviews to focus exclusively on the book, the publishers and Dr. Peterson scheduled an interview with The Sunday Times, UK. In anticipation of any potential for new skewed journalism, Mikhaila Peterson recommended the dialog be recorded. This recording was published January 31. The act of recording was found to be prescient, with the content of the Sunday Times article exhibiting an intent to cause injury.
Further events, series, are proposed, including a return to the Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories, considering the books of Exodus, Proverbs.
Viewership
[edit]The channel gathered more than 1.8 million subscribers and his videos received more than 65 million views as of August 2018.[9] After the "Return Home" in October 2020, Spencer Neale wrote an article by MSN, mentioning the subscriber count was over 3 million.[10] By January 2021, subscribers on JordanPetersonVideos numbered at 3.4 million and total views reached over 200 million.[1]
Courses
[edit]Maps of Meaning
[edit]Maps of Meaning lectures at Harvard predate the official publication of the book by Routledge in 1999.

This translation was an early special upload of Maps of Meaning with baked-in text subtitles, separate to YouTube's auto-generating subtitles and auto-translation function. This was the first experiment to deliver Peterson's work to non-English speakers.

[edit]Podcast
[edit]In December 2016, Peterson started The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast.[11]
In 2017, first episodes of a podcast were published on SoundCloud, from audio extracted from lectures. Interviews and conversations recorded as video for YouTube release were also subsequently released as episodes in the audio podcast.
In March 2019, the podcast joined the Westwood One network with Peterson's daughter Mikhaila as a co-host on some episodes.[12] The release of audio from such recordings was maintained until 2020.
Beginning 2020, recorded video conversations with Mikhaila Peterson and Jordan Peterson with notable figures are recorded and released simultaneously to the YouTube channel and independently on podcast networks.
