From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

iFunny is a mobile application published by crazy-hot solutions, first released for Windows Phone 7 on January 2, 2012 and Windows Phone 8 on June 15, 2013. The application is distinctive in that it aggregates content from multiple funny sources across the internet, allowing access through a single interface.

History[edit]

iFunny was originally named iLOL’d[1] and was released on January 2, 2012 in the Windows Phone Store as an application for Windows Phone 7. The application was a free download, supported by advertising that was shown to users while viewing pictures. There was also a paid version of the application that would remove all ads from the application.

At the time of initial release, iFunny aggregated content from several of the popular internet meme sites of the time, including: "I Can Has Cheezburger?," "LOL Dogs," "NOT your best day," "Damn Funny Texts," "Damn You Autocorrect," "Parent Fails," "The Worst Stuff Ever," "Wrong Number Texts," "Why, Siri, Why?," "Awkward Names," "Epic WTFs," "Invisible Cats," "Work LOLs," and "Get Out of the Mirror." Users were able to browse these meme’s by theme, or via Popular, Featured, and Favorite categories. All memes could be shared via Facebook, Twitter, SMS, or email.

The application added an iFunny feed on May 1, 2013 and changed names in the Windows Phone Store shortly thereafter.

On June 15, 2013, the first Windows Phone 8 version was released[2], and shortly thereafter several new features were added to the application including achievements, Windows Phone 8 integration (live tiles, wide tiles), and integration with 3rd party apps such as Skinery Tiles.

Over time, as the feeds aggregated by iFunny became obsolete or new feeds became popular on the internet, the application added and removed feeds. In 2013, the "Why, Siri, Why?" and "Invisible Cats" feeds were removed. In 2014, the "9gag" and "memedroid" feeds were added.

Between November 2013 and March 2014, features that had been requested by iFunny users were released in the application: the ability to comment on memes, the ability to like/dislike a meme, and support for animated GIF memes, which were previously unsupported on the Windows Phone platform.

Monetization[edit]

iFunny is supported by in-app advertising that is shown on-screen while viewing funny pictures. Additionally, while all features in the app are free, the use of some features is limited until users perform an in-app purchase or use the application for a specified period of time.

Reception[edit]

Positive[edit]

iFunny has been well received by the Windows Phone community[3][4]. It has consistently been in the Top 10 Free apps of the Entertainment category,[5] and as of September 2015 has over 32,500 reviews with an average of 4.6/5.0 stars.[6]

Negative[edit]

The most common request for improvement from iFunny users is the ability to create memes within the application – a feature that has never existed in iFunny for Windows Phone, but does exist in similar applications for iOS and Android.

Application Icons[edit]

iFunny has used several application icons, and as of June 2014, users are able to pick an icon set to use for the application.
