List of SpongeBob SquarePants shorts[edit]
The following is a list of shorts from the series SpongeBob SquarePants, an American animated television series created by marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg that premiered on Nickelodeon on May 1, 1999.[1] The series is set in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom, and centers on the adventures and endeavors of SpongeBob SquarePants, an over-optimistic sea sponge. Many of the ideas for the show originated in an unpublished, educational comic book titled The Intertidal Zone, which Hillenburg created in the mid-1980s. He began developing SpongeBob SquarePants into a television series in 1996 after the cancellation of Rocko's Modern Life, another Nickelodeon television series that Hillenburg previously directed.[2][3]
Along with the over 250 half-hours that have premiered over the 2 decades, as well as three feature-length films, various shorts have been featured alongside the series as early as 2000. Certain shorts have only aired exclusively on television, while others have been released on online or on DVD. Nickelodeon themselves have redistributed many of them on their official YouTube channels.
Shorts[edit]
Season 1 (2000)[edit]
Despite the series premiering in 1999, the first proper short-form content wouldn't be officially released until early 2000, with a Kids' Choice Awards short making its' debut on April 15 of that year — being used to present the award in the "Favorite Cartoon" category. The brief film is composed of reused animation from the second half of the ninth episode of the first season, "Opposite Day," with new lines being recorded by Tom Kenny and Bill Faggerbakke, voicing SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star respectively. Along with the rest of the ceremony, the short obtained 3.7 million viewers upon its premiere.[4]
The second series of shorts, titled Astrology with Squidward, made their debut on Nickelodeon during the summer of 2000 acting as interstitials during commercial breaks, and were repurposed and reran throughout the summer of 2001. In these shorts, Squidward Tentacles acts as an astrologist exploring various different zodiac signs, not only using different characters and incidentals to represent each signal, but also noting the pros and cons of each sign. On February 2, 2020, the official SpongeBob YouTube channel released all 6 shorts on the website, with various clips of other episodes intertwined into Squidward's commentary.[5]

Season 2 (2000—01)[edit]
A mere three shorts were released during this season's run, the least of any season in the series. All of them were commercial shorts, advertising certain promotions and products.
The first of the three, titled "Nick or Treat Sweepstakes," helped promote Nickelodeon's long-running "Nick or Treat" campaign, an annual event in which participants could win prizes if they entered.[7][8] According to the short, during the 2000 edition of the event, one could win a party featuring various Nabisco products and Nickelodeon characters.[9]
Following the previous about a few months later, "Chocolate Milk" was released on February 24, 2001, not only advertising the chocolate milk sector of the "Got Milk?" line of beverages,[10][11][12] but serving as a tie-in to promote the series' upcoming special, Shanghaied.[a] The short mainly follows SpongeBob being unable to endure a milk mustache due to his inherent absorbency, while Patrick is continuously able to keep his. In March 2001, a simplified print-ad edition of the commercial debuted in various children's magazines, such as Sports Illustrated for Kids, Disney Adventures, and Nickelodeon Magazine.[12]
2 decades after its release, "Chocolate Milk" later became a popular subject of lost media, as besides a single photo and the print-ad inspired by the brief film, no footage of the short had surfaced. It was eventually found and released to the internet on October 15, 2022.[14]
The final short released was "New Home," which advertised the Target chain of stores as the new home of the series. It premiered on October 5, 2001, and was directed by former Walt Disney Animation Studios and Warner Bros. Animation animator, Darrell Van Citters.[15][16]
