Administrators' newsletter – February 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

Administrators' newsletter – March 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

Hi Salvio giuliano,

a 2011 block is being appealed. 🙂 Is it okay if I handle User_talk:Artversion#December_2011?

I wish you all the best.

Best regards,
~ ToBeFree (talk) 01:51, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

Hello there, @ToBeFree:. Sure. I appreciate you letting me know, but it really was not necessary. Best. Salvio 13:13, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

Arbitration

  • A motion was passed to enact a 500/30 restriction on articles related to the history of Jews and antisemitism in Poland during World War II (1933–45), including the Holocaust in Poland. Article talk pages where disruption occurs may also be managed with the stated restriction.

Aye, that was him indeed. Good to see you, Drmies! I'm still here and still fighting, so can't complain . Salvio 16:12, 22 July 2020 (UTC)

Unblocked Sock

(copied from Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/AlaskaLava/Archive)

Hey Salvio giuliano, I don't know what he told you privately, but he was using the two accounts for five years without disclosing it. "An editor using multiple accounts for valid reasons should, on each account's user page, list all the other accounts with an explanation of their purpose." He didn't create the second account for a legetimate use (per the valid reasons under WP:SOCKLEGIT). He's claiming that he's using (AlaskaLava) "for East African more precisely Horn of African related articles" while he uses Ozan33Ankara for Middle-East, North African related topics. But that's not the full picture, all of his edits are made to islamic history-related articles (the Yusuf ibn Tashfin article he edited using 'AlaskaLav' is not an "East African more precisely Horn of African related article"). There is no East African-MENA demarcation line between his accounts. Plus all of the destruptive edits, the deprecated sites, self-published books, misrepresentation of sources, edit warring and unexplained moves, etc. He's definitely not here to build an encyclopedia. Kind Regards -TheseusHeLl (talk) 06:29, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

Well, as far as I'm concerned, the sock issue has been resolved satisfactorily. If there are other issues, they can be assessed on their own and, if necessary, measures may be taken, but in order to do that a new discussion has to be started. Salvio 07:10, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

Pings in REFUND responses

There was recently agreement at WT:REFUND that when responding to a REFUND request it is a good practice, although not required, to ping the requesting editor. I see you have recently been responding, and I want to draw this to your attention, as it is a change. It is now in the instructions, but experienced editors may not re-read that looking for changes. Reasons and discussion may be found at WT:REFUND#Pinging requestors DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 14:20, 7 August 2020 (UTC)

Thanks, will do! Salvio 14:33, 7 August 2020 (UTC)

MfD nomination of Draft:Axcient

Draft:Axcient, a page which you created or substantially contributed to, has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; you may participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Draft:Axcient and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Draft:Axcient during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. Still edit warring despite block

Hello, despite giving him a 72 hour block for edit warring at the Norfolk Island page, user Couldn't think of a decent username went ahead and reverted again, without explanation, immediately upon being unblocked. On their talk page, they also removed the message you left regarding the block, and in its place left a strange attack against me. It is clear they aren't interested in discussion or constructive editing, only causing trouble. - HappyWaldo (talk) 01:01, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

Nobody likes a snitch Derek. CTDU (talk)
@HappyWaldo and Couldn't think of a decent username: first of all, calling another editor a snitch is a personal attack and may lead to blocks. Other than that, I have now fully protected the page for a week. Again, please, take the dispute to the talk page and follow WP:DR. Edit warring is no way to solve content disputes.
