Hi Sirdog.

The current statement is in fact a misinterpretation of the information in the source article.

Shortly, the article is decrying the fact that the soldiers in the movie are wearing Loricae Segmentatae (with the addendum that they are made out of leather, which they NEVER where), which, at the time that the movie is set, would have been replaced by Hamatae og Squamatae.

So the statement "... no longer wore leather armor..." is in fact wrong, as they never would have.
