Question from SelfyouGainy (01:15, 23 February 2024)
Hello, you have been assigned as my Mentor. I want to create my first article. Which advise can you give me --SelfyouGainy (talk) 01:15, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, welcome to Wikipedia. There are lots of help pages - you could start with Help:Editing for basic editing information, and then Articles for Creation for a guide on how to create an article. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 08:16, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
Contentious topics alert - Armenia, Azerbaijan, or related conflicts
You have recently made edits related to Armenia, Azerbaijan, or related conflicts. This is a standard message to inform you that Armenia, Azerbaijan, or related conflicts is a designated contentious topic. This message does not imply that there are any issues with your editing. Contentious topics are the successor to the former discretionary sanctions system, which you may be aware of. For more information about the contentious topics system, please see Wikipedia:Contentious topics. For a summary of difference between the former and new system, see WP:CTVSDS. Question from Seckrates2024 (09:36, 24 February 2024)
Hi, I’m planning in creating a Page for a Business that I’m helping with. Can you guide me on how I should write it so that it’s still following the guidelines?
The Business name of it is “St. Louis Sod Install”. Yes, they are registered in St. Louis and are paying their Tax so that if we need to show those, I guess I can take it from the actual owner.
Let me know what’s needed to be done like the outline on how i should write it. Thank you --Seckrates2024 (talk) 09:36, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, welcome to Wikipedia. Unfortunately it is highly unlikely that a small business like this is a suitable subject for an article. You can read more about what counts as notable here: Wikipedia:Notability. The other relevant policy is Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 17:30, 24 February 2024 (UTC)

Question from Grizi fu (10:55, 11 March 2024)
Dear mentor I have a question. Recently I have been not edit waring but rather having an edit skirmish with a non registered user that doesn’t provide any sources to their statements and I would like to ask is it possible to have a page at least be temporarily be locked for non registered users? It’s also a page that has been reviewed as a good page and I would hate for this page, as it’s a topic I am really interested in to loose said status. Greetings Grizi fu. --Grizi fu (talk) 10:55, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- Such locking is possible, in cases of serious disruption. If you are talking about the edits to Cambodian–Vietnamese War, then it seems to have died down with the text that you want in place? However, I notice that at one point you added a source which is unlikely to be suitable to support a statement in the infobox (seems to be a primary source). Infoboxes are for at-a-glance summaries of uncontroversial information that doesn't need a great deal of nuance or context to understand.
- You might like to read Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle, which is a common method of resolving disputes. Since your change was reverted, rather than continue to un-revert (which, as you've observed, usually makes for an unproductive edit war), a sensible next step would be to open a discussion on the talk page and explain why the content should be added. You can give your reasoning, and any opposing editors can give theirs. Hopefully you would arrive at a consensus, but if not then there are further options for dispute resolution. Question from Hardshell Baptist (17:01, 9 April 2024)
Good to get some extra help & insight to what & how things work on Wikipedia--thank you! I have done ! edit. It is an add-on last paragraph to The Nest, under the Plot category. The Nest is a Jude Law movie. I had just seen the movie and felt that the ending while subject to different interpretations, deserved a little more input on the page. Would you go to that listing & look over my addition of what is now the last paragraph under Plot? If you have some suggestions for improvement, I'd be happy to get them. thanks again, Hardshell B. --Hardshell Baptist (talk) 17:01, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Hardshell Baptist, welcome to Wikipedia. It seems that your edit was reverted by another user, and I can see why - it reads less like a plot summary, and more like analysis. This is considered original research, and one of the principles of Wikipedia is that we don't publish original research. The policy can be read in full here: Wikipedia:No original research. If you feel that including some plot analysis would improve the article, you will need to find a source that provides this analysis so that you can summarise it in the article. It's important that the article only includes information that can be verified in a reliable source. You can read more about Wikipedia's core content policies here: Wikipedia:Core content policies. Question from Ambur418 on Category:Indian atheists (13:43, 13 May 2024)
Hello, I am a newbie here. I want to add a person’s name to a list of people in one of the wiki pages. How can I add it? I tried adding the name but it is sitting in a wrong place in the article. Thank you. --Ambur418 (talk) 13:43, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Ambur418. It looks like you tried to add the name to the category page. That's not how categories work on Wikipedia. Take a look at the help page here for an explanation: Help:Category. You would need to edit the article of the person in question, which is here: P. C. Sreeram. However, the article doesn't seem to mention atheism, so I think it is unlikely to be an appropriate category to put that article in. There is guidance on when not to use categories here: Wikipedia:Overcategorization. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 16:05, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

Question from Axcelculture on Wikipedia:Sandbox (20:36, 29 May 2024)
Hello Mentor! Thanks for your help! I am new to Wikipedia writing, just tried to write about Ascentta, a company description. But I am not sure if the references part is in a correct format. Please advise. --Axcelculture (talk) 20:36, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Axcelculture, welcome. There is a help page on citations here: Help:Referencing for beginners. However, when creating a new article it may be best to start at the following page: Wikipedia:Articles for creation. This will guide you through several key policies and guidelines, including on notability. Having done a brief search for sources on Ascentta, I think it is unlikely to be a notable company that needs its own article. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 21:45, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply. I will work on it. Axcelculture (talk) 19:42, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
June 2024
Hello! I see that, while I was away for a few days, you have been very busy removing a large amount of very rare, relevant and valuable images with an edit summary including "unverifiable caption". The person whose name (OK) and face (not always OK) that you wish to erase entirely from English Wikepdia (to begin with?) is clearly identifiable. So then, what's "unverifiable"? Of course, you are free to remove images you find inappropriate or unneccessarily promotional, etc. But the natural question on "unverifiable captions" would be: how many of Commons's images uploaded through an OTRS agreement, are you claiming have false descriptions? What you're doing, in other words, is a form of very serious personal attack, if you what you mean is that an uploader with OTRS has regularly been falsifying image info at Commons for over 15 years. Commons has had extremely few images uploaded of the type you have been removing, and many people appreciate generous donations of free images, to fill the void of entertainment images especially from the 1960s-1990s, and their inclusion in Wikipedia articles. Please explain! SergeWoodzing (talk) 18:58, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
- I removed images and captions for a variety of reasons. I kept some where, as you say, they seemed to fill a gap in the record. But there are some general issues:
- Wikimedia Commons has no verifiability policy. It's not a reliable source. We have only the word of the uploader that anything written there is accurate. That's not to say it's false; it's just unverifiable.
- The overall impression is that many of the images have been shoehorned into unrelated articles with the effect of making Lars Jacob more relevant or prominent than he actually is in relation to that subject. This makes inclusion WP:UNDUE.
- Many of the captions linked to Wild Side Story, which seems to have acquired a secondary purpose as a pseudo-bio in lieu of the now-deleted Jacob Truedson Demitz article. This linkage also feels undue.
- The photos seem to be from a personal family archive, and many seem to have been taken in a personal context. Honestly, it comes across as a little weird to be sharing these personal photos of celebrities, even if the licensing is kosher, e.g. this one which seems to be a random selfie on a subway. What's the encyclopedic purpose?
- Overall I am left with the impression that the purpose of all of these insertions is the personal aggrandisement of your friends/family. Maybe that wasn't your intention, but nevertheless that's the impression I get. That's why editing with a COI is so treacherous. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 10:38, 15 June 2024 (UTC)
- Your impression is quite wrong. The images, none of which are what you could ever succeed in ridiculing as family pictures, were all taken in public places, not in private. There are integrity, release and privacy issues involved in that, which you cannot teach me about. I am sorry that your opinion is so disparaging of one of the most generous donors of relevant images from their valuable archives and of their own creation of any organization that has ever contrubuted to that project. Hardly anyone ever does that. Most archives sit on their rare entertainment photos, hoping to make money on them "some day".
- I could see it if you had just deleted the name of someone who is acquainted with a user you obviously despise (for correctly criticizing one single item in your work), but in each and every case you removed images that are relevant to those articles. Two well-known Swedish actors who according to article text are close friends, for example, just because they are on the subway with someone you appparently suspect is not actually an old show director but some sort of PR-hungry scheister. OTRS people trust donors to provide correct info, and images found to have fake info will be deleted. There are rules at Commons. We've been doing this since 2008 and we know what we're doing. It's called generosity. What the OTRS people think counts at Commons. Your personal animosity and bias does not. I stand by my opinion that some of your embarrassingly less-that-knowledgeable wording amounts to personal attacks. Ease your grudge and pipe down! --SergeWoodzing (talk) 10:34, 16 June 2024 (UTC)

Improving a stub biography
Hi Barnards.tar.gz, I see that you are my Wikipedia-assigned "mentor", so I thought you might be a good person to ask: could you please review my recent edits to this biography of a computer scientist? I've done my best to consult Wikipedia guidelines about citing sources, style, etc. but I'm sure there are things I will have missed. Also, the article is marked as a stub, so what are the best ways to expand it?
(Possibly useful context: I am a grad student in computer science, so I can navigate some of the technical content about this person, if needed.) Shardul.chiplunkar (talk) 17:10, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Shardul.chiplunkar. Welcome to Wikipedia! The edits look great. You've probably read the advice at Wikipedia:Stub on what a stub is and how to improve stubs. As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing wrong with an article being a stub - it just means it's short and there could probably be more added. If reliable sources are available, the article should be expanded. If not, it's better to leave the article short. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 11:27, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- Alright, makes sense, thanks! Shardul.chiplunkar (talk) 10:39, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
Question from RhondAnn0603 (02:12, 15 July 2024)
My father should have been included in the section on Medal of Heroic Deeds by the Norwegian royalty. He received this medal (his is gold) in 1958. He rescued the tug boat Polar Bjorn off the coast of Greenland. The reigning monarch was Olav V.
This information is in the book, Flying into History-Volume 1 by Richard Pierson and Billie Parker. --RhondAnn0603 (talk) 02:12, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @RhondAnn0603, welcome to Wikipedia. We have a number of policies on when to include information - we don’t normally list information just because it’s true or verifiable. It has to be notable to get its own article, and significant to the subject if mentioned on another article. I haven’t got access to that book so I’m unsure what the proposed edit would look like. Question from Curiouscat17 (14:22, 18 July 2024)
I was banned from editing wikipedia, even though I only made edits that I backed up with citations and credible news articles. The community here did not consider my edits, before reporting me and reverting to a previous version. --Curiouscat17 (talk) 14:22, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
- Seems like you’ve had an answer from others. Your edits to that article do come across as promotional, which tends to set off people’s conflict of interest-detectors. Do you have any relationship or personal/professional connection with the subject? Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 11:52, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
Question from Dondelicedushime257 (09:47, 30 July 2024)
Hello ! My name is Don Delice Dushime and i just joined wikipedia and i want to write two articles, one about the fundraising platform that i launced and other about me.
Can you help me with guidance ? Thanks ! --Dondelicedushime257 (talk) 09:47, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Dondelicedushime257, welcome to Wikipedia. It is almost never a good idea to write articles about yourself or your projects. Please read our guidelines on conflicts of interest. You are very welcome to edit in unrelated areas. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 09:50, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
- What can i do then ? Can you look for other one to write it ? Dondelicedushime257 (talk) 09:52, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
- If you are interested in contributing to Wikipedia in general, you could take a look at the Wikipedia:Task Center.
- If you mean can a friend write an article about you instead of you, then that would almost certainly still be a conflict of interest. You should also read WP:Notability to see if you or your fundraising platform would qualify as notable subjects for articles. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 12:12, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
