Standard discretionary alerts for recent American politics and gender
This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.
You have shown interest in post-1992 politics of the United States and closely related people. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

You must follow these page-specific restrictions until you have 500 edits and have been here 30 days
For the purposes of editing restrictions in the ARBPIA topic area, the "area of conflict" shall be defined as encompassing
- the entire set of articles whose topic relates to the Arab-Israeli conflict, broadly interpreted ("primary articles"), and
- edits relating to the Arab-Israeli conflict, to pages and discussions in all namespaces with the exception of userspace ("related content")
Also,
500/30 Rule: All IP editors, users with fewer than 500 edits, and users with less than 30 days' tenure are prohibited from editing content within the area of conflict. On primary articles, this prohibition is preferably to be enforced by use of extended confirmed protection (ECP) but this is not mandatory. On pages with related content, or on primary articles where ECP is not feasible, the 500/30 Rule may be enforced by other methods, including page protection, reverts, blocks, the use of pending changes, and appropriate edit filters. Reverts made solely to enforce the 500/30 Rule are not considered edit warring.
The sole exceptions to this prohibition are:
1. Editors who are not eligible to be extended-confirmed may use the Talk: namespace to post constructive comments and make edit requests related to articles within the topic area, provided they are not disruptive. Talk pages where disruption occurs may be managed by any of the methods noted in paragraph b). This exception does not apply to other internal project discussions such as AfDs, WikiProjects, RfCs, noticeboard discussions, etc.
2. Editors who are not eligible to be extended-confirmed may not create new articles, but administrators may exercise discretion when deciding how to enforce this remedy on article creations. Deletion of new articles created by editors who do not meet the criteria is permitted but not required.
3. One Revert Restriction (1RR): Each editor is limited to one revert per page per 24 hours on any edits made to content within the area of conflict. Reverts made to enforce the 500/30 Rule are exempt from the provisions of this motion. Also, the normal exemptions apply. Editors who violate this restriction may be blocked by any uninvolved administrator.
Note that this means your edits on such pages (which you aren't yet eligible to make) may be reverted by anyone at any time. These restrictions are stricter than those in most other areas because of the problems that we've had in this area. Doug Weller talk 12:24, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
Some falafel for you!
Thank-you for your essay, it made me very happy on a wet Saturday afternoon in Melbourne, Australia. I needed it to balance out all the WMF stuff,
So, as it is Saturday, and felafel day for me, I share some with you virtually -it is very well made and has lots of Sriracha sauce (Huy Fong Foods)! BTW is the Barnard a reference ot Barnard's Star which I just found out is quite close :-) Wakelamp d[@-@]b (talk) 05:14, 17 September 2022 (UTC) |

Community toilet scheme moved to draftspace
An article you recently created, Community toilet scheme, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. HI. I am new and have been working on a page for an artist. I have a draft and all the coding seems accurate with no errors. I just don't quite know how to publish it and from where. I think I was in the sandbox practicing? I have more questions, but I haven't used this Ask Your Mentor feature before so I'll just start with one. THANKS!!!! --Metallica Band (talk) 19:33, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Metallica Band, welcome. I can’t see which page you’ve been editing from your contribution history. Are you sure it has been saved? Could you provide a link? Feel free to drop any further questions here. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 21:04, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, I'm not sure how to start writing a wiki and save it without publishing it. I've just been accessing a sandbox and copy/pasting the code in a word doc to save my work that way. How exactly do I start writing a wiki and save it without publishing it? I'm pretty much done with it for now, but have plans on future additions especially when more interviews have been done do I can cite from those as well. Metallica Band (talk) 08:35, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
- I think the best starting point for you would be this page: Wikipedia:Articles_for_creation, which guides you through the process of creating a new article (including assessing whether the article should be created). Have you seen Help:Contents? That's a portal to all kinds of help and guidance for new editors. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 10:23, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

Redirects
Hi Barnards.tar.gz, When you create a redirect, please ensure that the term is actually used on the target page. If it is not, please add it, complete with appropriate reference, so that the reader understands why the redirect exists, Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 10:28, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Pbsouthwood. Is usage of a redirected term always an improvement? I'm not sure... this is an uncommon synonym which I could find used in only one academic source [1], but a synonym nonetheless. I felt this qualified for a redirect but not for any usage in the article itself. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 11:03, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
- In that case you could say something like "also occasionally term B[1]", so that a person redirected to that page knows it is legitimate, otherwise they have to check for themselves. Mainly, it protects the redirect from being proposed for deletion. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 11:18, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

Hello. You removed the category of uxoricide from Death on the Nile (2022) as not defining - but the entire movie is about solving the mystery of a woman's murder by her husband. That's the very definition of "defining". Deiadameian (talk) 09:30, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Deiadameian, the definition of defining I'm going by is the one on WP:DEFINING:
A defining characteristic is one that reliable sources commonly and consistently refer to in describing the topic
. Featuring uxoricide isn't enough. Sources don't call it "a uxoricide film" or "a film about a man who kills his wife". Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 12:19, 12 May 2023 (UTC)- This is because such thing would be a spoiler, and the majority of sources you'll look for will avoid spoilers. It is thus skipped not due to its insignificance but rather as a service to the audience and the filmmakers. Spoiler articles on the other hand (which won't be as many, and they won't be the prioritized ones due to their nature) would mention it. The article for the book does contain the category (and it was not me who added it) and the same thing applies to the book as well. I believe the category should be restored for the the reasons I gave above: it is the most defining element (it is in fact the subject of the very title), the book's article has it, and its omission in spoiler-free sources is not due to non-notability but rather marketing.
- Edit: Besides, the film itself counts as a source on itself, and it definitely mentions the uxoricide. Deiadameian (talk) 13:16, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
- Do you have any examples of non-spoiler-free sources describing the film in this way? Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 13:30, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
- Like this? Deiadameian (talk) 13:46, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
- No, mentioning that plot element isn’t the same as it being a defining characteristic of the film. Some other examples: “Terminator is a sci-fi film about a robot that travels back in time” (defining categories would be sci-fi movies, time-travel movies, robot movies); “Clue is a murder mystery film based on a board game” (defining categories would be murder mystery movies, movies based on board games). These are defining characteristics that are commonly and consistently used to describe the subject. Inappropriate categories would be “movies featuring sharp metal objects” and “movies with characters dressed as French maids” respectively. Both would be true and verifiable, but not defining.
- I don’t believe sources would ever say “Death on the Nile is a film about a man who murders his wife”, even if they paid no heed to spoilers. They would say something like “Death on the Nile is a Poirot film about a murder on a cruise ship in the 1930s”. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 14:28, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
- Listen, I am talking about facts, not hypothetical scenarios. I gave you an example and you dismissed it without reason and then ignored my other points because you stick too much to one rule's specific wording, saying that the sources (the ones that you are willing to accept, because you dismiss the ones that don't fit) do not contain spoilers. I am not going to argue any further because there is no merit. But if you think that the very central theme of a work is not a defining characteristic because spoiler-avoiding brief descriptions would not mention it, then I just disagree. Will you also remove the part from the summary where it says Simon killed his wife because most articles won't mention it? Deiadameian (talk) 18:48, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
- No, because the policy on overcategorization applies to categories not to the main body of the article. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 19:12, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

Question from VariaSuitGirl (14:00, 3 June 2023)
Greetings user,
I was assigned to you under your mentorship, and I wanted to introduce myself, and ask if there were any easily digestible resources you could point me at to fully understand the pitfalls and endeavors of early Wikipedia editing. At the moment, I'm scouring Youtube for any information that may be useful to know, but if there are any specifics you could suggest, I would be much appreciative. --VariaSuitGirl (talk) 14:00, 3 June 2023 (UTC)

Question from Metallica Band (11:48, 4 June 2023)
Hi again. I forgot you were here to help me if I had a question. So I tried to submit an article and it was deemed too promotional. I need different wording. Seems like something I can fix easily enough. Seems like if I reword it then it would pass. Could you give me an example of what kind of wording I would need to use? --Metallica Band (talk) 11:48, 4 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hi. I looked at your article Draft:Lo La. Artists and their friends, family and agents will sometimes come to Wikipedia and create an article whose main purpose is to aggrandize, promote or sell their subject. Wikipedia editors are quite sensitive to this, especially for minor, lesser-known and upcoming artists, even if self-promotion was not the intention of the article's contributors.
- For the avoidance of doubt, could you confirm whether you are affiliated with the subject? Even if you are, that doesn't mean you can't write this article, it just means you would need to disclose a conflict of interest, then go above and beyond to make your article fastidiously neutral.
- If we take a look at the Lo La article as it currently stands:
known for her unique blend
. I couldn't see this phrase supported by a source, so it comes across as promotional. Known by who?passion for music was evident from a young age
. The source doesn't say this explicitly, so it comes across as your opinion rather than factual.topped the charts in Indonesia
. Charts plural? The source only mentions one chart (singular), and it's not the Billboard Indonesia Top 100, so this comes across as misleading. She has been an advocate for mental health awareness
. I couldn't find anything in this paragraph's source to support this. Even if it's true, it still has to be significant (being an advocate could mean almost anything).known for her creative and artistic persona
. This is not evident from the source and comes across as your opinion. See also MOS:PUFFERY and "weasel words".
- In general, the sources seem borderline in terms of their reliability (many are blogs), and it's unclear to me whether the subject is notable. Have a look at WP:ARTIST and see if any of the notability criteria apply. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 14:06, 4 June 2023 (UTC)
+rollback
Hi Barnards.tar.gz,
After reviewing your request, I have added your account to the rollback group. Keep in mind these things when using rollback:
- Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
- Users should be informed (or warned) after their edits have been reverted. If warnings repeatedly don't help, WP:ANI is the default place to go. In cases of very clear ongoing intentional damage to the encyclopedia, WP:AIV can be used.
- Reverting someone's edits may confuse or upset them. Whenever other users message you on your talk page, please take the time to respond to their concerns; accountability is important. For most users who message you, the tone and quality of your answer will permanently influence their opinion about Wikipedia in general.
- Because the plain default rollback link does not provide any explanatory edit summary, it must not be used to revert good faith contributions, even if these contributions are disruptive. Take the time to write a proper summary whenever you're dealing with a lack of neutrality or verifiability; a short explanation like "
[[WP:NPOV|not neutral]]
" or "[[WP:INTREF|Please provide a citation]]
" is helpful. - Rollback may never be used to edit war, which you'll notice to be surprisingly tempting in genuine content disputes. Please especially keep the three-revert rule in mind. If you see others edit warring, please file a report at WP:ANEW. The most helpful essay I've ever seen is WP:DISCFAIL; it is especially important for those who review content regularly.
- If you encounter private information or threats of physical harm during your patrols, please quickly use Special:EmailUser/Oversight or Special:EmailUser/Emergency; ideally bookmark these pages now. See WP:OS and WP:EMERGENCY for details. If you're regularly patrolling recent changes, you will need both contacts sooner or later, and you'll be happy about the bookmarks.
- Use common sense.
To try rollback for the first time, you may like to make an edit to WP:Sandbox, and another one, and another one, and then revert the row with one click. I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into trouble or have any questions about rollback. Thank you for your time and work in cleaning up Wikipedia. Happy editing!
Best regards,
~ ToBeFree (talk) 18:18, 10 June 2023 (UTC)

- Hi Oneequalsequalsone, apologies for the very late response - had a lot going on off-wiki.
- Wikipedia:Contributing to Wikipedia is probably a good starting place. I personally think that the primary guideline is to act in good faith. If you make mistakes in good faith, someone will tell you and it will be a learning experience. Every editor takes a different journey. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 14:10, 4 August 2023 (UTC)

Question from Universe5656 (00:29, 1 October 2023)
Hi! How do I create a page for an Australian artist? No page exists for him. Thanks. --Universe5656 (talk) 00:29, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
Question from Universe5656 (01:04, 1 October 2023)
Hi again, I want to add Sam Sameja as an Australian artist and create a wikipedia page too.
The content that I have is below:
Sam Sameja also known as Fazlul Karim Sameja (born 15 June 1939) is a Tanzanian born Australian artist.
Sameja was born on the small island of Pemba, Tanganyika (now Tanzania). His grandparents had migrated from India to Africa in the 1890s. Sameja spent his childhood growing up in British ruled Zanzibar, the larger more well-known island of the region often referred to as the “Spice Islands”.
After secondary school, he secured a scholarship to study Fine Arts at the Institute of Surikov in Moscow in 1959. He spent at least 6 years in the USSR including living in Georgia for a period of time learning the language.
After Sameja left the USSR, he travelled across Europe in search for another art scholarship although his attempts were unsuccessful. He then briefly headed back to East Africa where there was much conflict. It was not safe for him to stay so he made his way to London and eventually was granted the status of a political refugee.
It was in London where he met his Australian (British born) wife and in the 1970s they immigrated to Western Australia.
This is where most of Sameja's paintings were created with various mediums including oil and acrylic on canvas and board.
His works can be categorized into surrealism and abstract. In his earlier years, his paintings featured prominent public figures or an event. In his later years, he concentrated on colour and design with his ideas often coming directly his dreamworld.
He moved to Melbourne in 2009 and now is living in aged care with dementia. --Universe5656 (talk) 01:04, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Universe5656. Can all of this be verified in reliable sources? Do you have any conflict of interest? Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 07:19, 1 October 2023 (UTC)

Question from Peter Hannon (13:35, 17 October 2023)
Hi, I uploaded a picture file yesterday. Stupidly I gave it the wrong name: "Sir Edmund Vivan Bleackley". It was intended for the page on Edmund Vivian Gabriel and is indeed a picture of him. I would like to either change the name or replace the file with a correctly named one, but can't figure out how to do that. --Peter Hannon (talk) 13:35, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Peter. There are instructions on how to request a file renaming here. However, it looks like there could be a broader issue: if this person is a family member, you will need to consider the conflict of interest guidelines. Additionally, all information must be verifiable. Can you provide a source for the anecdote you added? Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 19:18, 18 October 2023 (UTC)

PD-USonly question
Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals) (revision 1184438552)
Copyright is complicated. Every work has a copyright in various countries and is subject to different terms. For example, the copyright of the original diary of Anne Frank expired in The Netherlands. But in the US it's still copyrighted and should expire in 2043.
As the WMF is based in the US only the copyright status in the US legally matters. English Wikipedia adopted this and accepts files that are PD-USonly. Commons has a different policy: on paper works have to be public domain in both the US and the country of origin. In practice, the requirement to be PD in the US is forgotten/ignored on a regular basis. This occasionally results in a DMCA takedown request. There are also files on Commons that are public domain in the country of origin and under copyright in the US, but WMF legal ignores them as they may be covered by fair use law. Cool, eh?
It's unrealistic to determine for any work whether it's public domain worldwide. At some point I figured out that even cave paintings could theoretically be protected by copyright in some places under specific circumstances. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 12:58, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- And completely forgot to answer your other questions. Wikimedia Commons is better if the work is also PD in the country of origin, otherwise it'll violate their policy. Wikisource is a free library, I don't think they do video, but English Wikisource does allow PD-USonly: s:en:File:Prague Triumphant.jpg. Archive.org does indeed host various PD feature films but we can't embed those, we can't edit file descriptions etc (archive.org is not a wiki) and whether streaming video works better on Wikimedia or archive.org probably depends on your device. Also, archive.org allows files in formats that are patent-encumbered, we don't, so we have a different scope. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 13:15, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for the detailed response. Are PD-USonly files considered non-free? Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 13:26, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- For the purpose of enwiki policy they are considered free. See Wikipedia:Image use policy#Public domain. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 14:00, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Svgmnd (23:44, 9 December 2023)
Hi there,
I have been editing a page in the sandbox mode but after I finished I accidentally clicked publish instead of preview. How can I revert this? The page was not ready and I am still in the process of oncluding references and so on. On a related note, I cannot find how to put the title to the page in the sandbox mode. Is there way to include the main title or is it going to show up when the article is published and reviewed?
Many thanks --Svgmnd (talk) 23:44, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Svgmnd. Sorry for the long delay in responding. Did you figure it out? Don't worry about draft edits made to your sandbox - that's what it's for. Feel free to build the article in your sandbox space incrementally. Have you read the Wikipedia policy on Wikipedia:Notability? Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 12:02, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, Thank you for the reply. I checked the notability and referencing instructions and adjusted my article accordingly. I have some other questions though.
- 1. How do I change/add the title
- 2. How can I put upload an image with facts listed? Like a short biography window on the left hand side.
- 3. How can I add the article in other relevant languages? It currently says no language is available.
- Many thanks. Svgmnd (talk) 19:50, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
- 1. You'll find guidance on the process of publishing an article here: Wikipedia:Articles for creation. You should be able to copy and paste the text you have already written into the new article. When you submit the draft for review, you'll get feedback. One thing that stood out to me when I looked at the draft briefly is that you're using the Azerbaijani Wikipedia as a source. We have an essay about this: Wikipedia:Wikipedia is not a reliable source. More generally, there is guidance on what counts as a reliable source: Wikipedia:Reliable sources. It is common for first drafts of new articles to be rejected for notability or sourcing reasons.
- 2. Help:Pictures explains how images can be added, but I'm not quite sure if an image is what you want - are you perhaps thinking of an infobox? Help:Infobox
- 3. This is the English Wikipedia. Each language has its own Wikipedia, with its own community and guidelines. If you wanted to create an article about this person on, say, the Azerbaijani Wikipedia, you'd need to create an account on [2] and go from there. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 20:50, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
- I was not sure about the wikipedia references as well so I removed them after your comment. And yes, what I meant was a picture for the infobox. I drafted an infobox content for now and I plan to add an image later. I suppose I can use my own photo by uploading it to wikimedia commons.
- There will be articles in three other relevant languages, each in their own wikipedia communities, so this my work within the English one. I am fairly new to wikipedia so I learn as I go by and I don't mind feedback for improvements. Once again, thank you for your help. I really appreciate it. Svgmnd (talk) 16:50, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, can you please check my article? I would like to submit it for review but before that I wanted to have some feedback. Svgmnd (talk) 19:43, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
- The key requirement from Wikipedia:Notability is this:
A topic is presumed to be suitable for a stand-alone article or list when it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject.
I looked at the first two sources that you have given, and I couldn't find Arif Ajaloghlu mentioned. However, I had to use Google Translate to interpret the documents, so my searching may be less than ideal. Can you pinpoint where specifically sources provide significant coverage of Arif Ajaloghlu? Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 15:57, 7 January 2024 (UTC)- The first two sources cover information about his direct ancestor to support the statement about his ancestry. The next two are about the person himself and, as the first one of those is in English, you can read and understand without translating.
- Following your confusion I made an adjustment in the title. Try searching for "Arif Acaloğlu" and it will return more than significat media coverage which is why this article is prepared in the first place. Svgmnd (talk) 16:34, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- OK. Another bit of feedback is that all the information should be Wikipedia:Verifiable. For example, where are the exact birth and death dates sourced from? Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 16:55, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- I cited a reliable media source for nearly every statement in the article. The birth year and the full date of death is accessible in the sources I provided, though it is not cited immediately after the dates. Would you recommend directly referencing it in the text? I haven't seen an article citing such information so I am not sure. Svgmnd (talk) 17:40, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- Wikipedia:Inline citations do make it easier to verify that the sources support the article content. When you say “the birth year” is accessible in the sources, do you mean the exact date is not - if so, where did it come from? Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 18:05, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- Several biographic articles and summaries mention the birth year, however the full birth date is collected from the person's CV. I don't think that would be a reliable source. Svgmnd (talk) 18:23, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- Do you have a Wikipedia:Conflict of interest here? Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 18:45, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- No, I don't have a conflict of interest. Is there any other feedback you can provide for improvement? Svgmnd (talk) 19:16, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- OK, the reason I ask is that having the person’s CV would usually indicate a close personal or professional relationship, which per WP:COI would create difficulties. I think you can go ahead and submit the draft and see what others think. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 21:26, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- The person's CV is available on the websites of the institutions of which he was part. I submitted the article for the review, thank you for your help. Svgmnd (talk) 23:08, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi, I would like to create a page for the actor Peter Vollebregt. How do I do that please? --Voicechoice2024 (talk) 22:24, 29 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Voicechoice2024. First thing to do is read Wikipedia:Notability, then determine if there are sufficient reliable sources on which to base the article. I did a quick search and didn’t find much. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 22:33, 29 December 2023 (UTC)
- There are over 60 credits for Peter Vollebregt on IMDB. I personally do determine that there are sufficient reliable sources on which to base an article. How do I proceed from here? Voicechoice2024 (talk) 22:43, 29 December 2023 (UTC)
- You can follow the process here: Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Be aware that IMDB is not itself considered a reliable source (WP:IMDB), and that there are many actors with numerous credits who still don’t have a Wikipedia article because they haven’t had enough coverage in independent sources. If you let me know what you think are the 2/3 best sources, I can help advise on whether those are suitable sources. I wouldn’t want you to waste your time writing an article that is destined for rejection. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 23:58, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

What do you think? Anything more you think needs added? --DanielHicksAss (talk) 01:38, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- The main piece of feedback you have received is that the article reads like an advertisement. And that's probably because it is, right? Its overall tone is self-promotional. Things like:
- Including the agent in the infobox.
- "Later to win multiple more awards" - which ones?
- The review from ukfilmreview.co.uk, which appears to be a pay-for-publicity site.
- His books published through Blurb - another self-publishing outlet.
- The lead which mentions Game of Thrones prominently, but for some reason he was uncredited?
- Have you read the two previous deletion nominations? Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Gary_Wales_(actor) and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gary Wales (actor) (2nd nomination). Unfortunately I don't think much has changed since the feedback given there. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 10:55, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

hey man, nice to meet you. I love writing and editing. I got on Wikipedia so I could publish some facts about my creative media company Syccyde Creationz in order to establish my first foray into having a global online presence. What would be the best and most compelling fact-based stuff to include in my first attempt at publishing an article? --TheNotoriousDR.O (talk) 05:17, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @TheNotoriousDR.O, welcome to Wikipedia. Due to the guideline on conflicts of interest and self-promotion (Wikipedia:Conflict of interest) it is strongly recommended not to write about yourself or your own businesses. Once you've made it big and reliable sources start publishing material about your company, it will be easy for someone else to write the article. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 11:03, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

If the information you want to add is not from a reliable source, you can’t add it. If you think some existing information is incorrect, you could open a new discussion on the talk page of the article and explain why you think so. You can read more about how to use talk pages here: Help:Talk pages. Question from CreativeSweet (17:58, 10 February 2024)
Hello Mentor. Designer Janene Higgins' page had a maintenance template on it from a previous editor. The ad-like copy has been redacted, I added requested further references/citations, and I have no COI. The page is basic and pretty straight-forward. So, I removed maintenance template. Put this information in my edit summary. I hope this is within Wikipedia regulations and the edits can stay - please advise, thank you. --CreativeSweet (talk) 17:58, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @CreativeSweet, welcome to Wikipedia. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to remove the advert tag, because a previous user already removed most of the advert-like content. It looks like the COI tag on that page relates to edits by a previous user who made a lot of edits in a pattern that makes it look like they may have had a conflict of interest. I’m not sure that issue is wholly resolved, because the sourcing is still extremely thin. I’m not sure this would pass our notability guidelines, particularly the guidelines for when an artist is notable. Are you aware of any further significant coverage in independent, reliable sources that provide information about the subject? As it stands, the article is at risk of deletion. Question from Burnst Jamp (01:32, 17 February 2024)
Hi there! I'm not new to Wiki editing but I am new to editing on Wikipedia itself, with its higher overall standards. I currently have an article submitted as an AfC draft: Draft:Karl Koch (Weezer assistant). I'm worried that parts of the draft may fall under WP:BOMBARDMENT (although of course not intentionally)—certain sentences have 2–3 attached citations (sometimes to reinforce information, sometimes to cover more than one claim). As an experienced editor, is your first impression of this page that it misuses citations? What do you think is the likely reaction a reviewer would have to it? Do you have any advice on how the draft may be made as encyclopedic and guideline-adhering as possible? Thank you! --Burnst Jamp (talk) 01:32, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Burnst Jamp, welcome to Wikipedia. On first inspection, it looks like you’ve done a great job. I don’t think overcitation is an issue. For a new article, the first and most important thing to check is the notability guidelines: Wikipedia:Notability. I think this subject would also fall under the notability guidance for artists: WP:NARTIST. I haven’t done an in-depth analysis, but my first impression was that many of the sources are passing references to Koch rather than in-depth coverage. Which would you say are the 2-3 best sources that provide the most significant coverage of Koch himself? These are the ones that would prove notability. Also, some sources may not be independent (e.g. anything published on an official Weezer site may count as a self-published source - WP:SPS). But overall, this is a really good start and I suspect it may already be ready to go into mainspace. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 08:02, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for the in-depth response!
- Proving notability has been one of my main focuses over the course of creating the page. I do believe that the individual is, at best, on the fringes of what Wikipedia deems notable. He is factually important to the development and popularity of the band and he is often mentioned or contacted to provide information in reliable articles/books on the band, however significant coverage is more difficult to find. Nonetheless, I have submitted the draft because I feel as though I have been able to build a case for notability with a handful of solid sources. Upon submitting it, I wrote a brief entry on the draft's talk page explaining my rationale and providing some context. A condensed list of important sources is available there.
- Re: WP:SPS, there are numerous citations on the page which I would agree are self-published or otherwise primary sources—including interviews with Koch and links to his personal website. These sources are used mostly to confirm biographical claims about Koch, indicate the existence of his own musical releases, or to provide sources for quotes from Weezer band members. In some cases though, arguable self-published sourced are the sole evidence for certain factual claims (e.g., "In 2014, the official Weezer Fan Club was revived by Koch and a fan named Lisa..."). I worked under the impression that, given notability has been proven by a sufficient number of solid sources, certain relevant claims could be included and proven using sources that wouldn't be deemed reliable/independent. However I may be wrong in this assumption! Please advise.
- Re: Conflict of Interest, the Weezerpedia wiki is official in that it has been included on the official band website as a social media link and it is paid for/hosted by Koch (since 2014). However, admins and editors are not paid, personally selected, vetted, nor affiliated with Koch or the band. And, although I do occasionally communicate with Koch, neither he nor the band have suggested or requested the creation of the article. I became interested in authoring the page because I am a fan of Koch's work and I feel as though he is sufficiently notable for Wikipedia. I hope this clears it up!
- Apologies for the length of this response and for any typographical errors (I am writing from a phone). And, again, thank you for the helpful response and kind words! I hope to contribute to this site as constructively as possible and it is helpful to get the opinions of an existing editor while I'm learning the ropes. - Limited use of self-published sources can be OK within the rules on WP:ABOUTSELF. Personally, I'm convinced by the sources you've highlighted on the talk page that notability is achieved. The Chicago Tribune article from 2001 is probably the best. I asked for the text of the deleted version of this article to be recovered, and have placed it here: User:Barnards.tar.gz/Karl Koch (musician). I was curious to see whether it had any usable material for the new article. I'm not sure it does. I also wondered whether it included that Chicago Tribune article. It didn't, and it's unfortunate that nobody identified this source during the AfD discussion. The new article is much better. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 21:26, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
- I forgot to ask, since you are an admin on Weezerpedia, and it’s an “official” wiki, do you have any connection to the band yourself? Our relevant policy would be: Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. Barnards.tar.gz (talk) 08:07, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
