Hello, I'm Jim1138. I noticed that you made a change to an article, Devendranath Sharma, but you didn't provide a source. I’ve removed it for now, but if you’d like to include a citation to a reliable source and re-add it, please do so! If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. Jim1138 (talk) 10:08, 19 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Devendranath Sharma

[edit]

Use of someone else for information such as what you said on my talk page (Dr. Vinaysheel Gautam. Dr. Vinayshil Gautam, M.A., Ph.D., FRAS). This is considered wp:original research and should not be used.

I undid your edit to Devendranath Sharma as it was unreferenced. Adding references is how we ensure that content is valid. Without references, a reader can not easily validate information and there is no presumption of accuracy. To add a reference, please read Help:Referencing for beginners and Help:footnotes. This is covered by the Wikipedia policy of wp:verifiability (WP:V). Please wp:cite your edits with wp:reliable sources (RS). Per WP:V unsourced content can be removed. Your edits are saved in the wp:page history. Please add references when you restore the content.

As this is an encyclopedia and the article is a biography and not a hagiography please use an encyclopedic wp:tone and avoid larding on the praise (wp:puffery). The article should not read like a resume. Avoid using phrases such as:

  • He elevated the craft of personal essays in Indian languages to a level which many have since tried to emulate.
  • Acharya Devendra Nath Sharma was endowed with multidimensional personality.
  • Acharya Devendra Nath Sharma was born in the family of renowned educationists and scholars.
  • He was a gifted teacher and orator, efficient administrator and innovative research supervisor.
  • He was a sensitive and loving human being whose principles and values were very important to him.
  • He never compromised on the basic beliefs.

Some may be OK if specifically stated in an RS. There are more sentences with issues.

  • What is this all about: Acharya Devendra Nath Sharma cleaning the walls of Patna University. It seems rather silly to me.

Again, all of this needs to be cited/referenced from RS. Don't restore it without a reliable source. Example. I have metre long fluorescent blue hair that sparkles. Dr. Vladimir Plutonium, B.S., Ph.D., CVSA, VPRd... and many other esteemed scholars agree this is correct! Rather difficult to verify? If it isn't verifiable, it shouldn't be trusted. Ever written a paper for an academic journal? Citations abound. Same should be true here. Any significant information needs a citation.
The English Wikipedia is more interested in accomplishments than letters after one's name. Example: Albert Einstein, Walter Reed, Please read Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biographies Thank you Jim1138 (talk) 18:06, 19 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

All of it. Tiderolls 10:13, 22 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Tide rolls: Can you please elaborate, as we have not copied the content and have written it based on the book and research paper we have given citation. BrianPaes (talk) 11:19, 22 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Tide rolls: Is there way we can get in touch with an Indian wikipedia office or representative as they would have better context to what we are trying to explain. BrianPaes (talk) 11:22, 22 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There are no Wikipedia "offices" that deal with content. You may try Wikipedia:WikiProject India for input but I think you'll receive very similar information. Who is "we"? Tiderolls 12:35, 22 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Tide rolls: Can you please elaborate, as we have not copied the content and have written it based on the book and research paper we have given citation BrianPaes (talk) 12:47, 22 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop asking the same question. I've answered you. If you wish another admin to examine the content then contact whomever you wish. You do understand that citing the source does not give license to quote exactly or even closely paraphrase, right? Tiderolls 13:21, 22 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jim

Regarding your comment on Devendranath Sharma edit. This is a summing up of major commentaries on writing of Acharya Devendra Nath Sharma available in the book: Acharya Devendra Nath Sharma: Ek Samashtimaya Vyaktitva - (translated into English the title would be :An Inclusive Personality) edited by Dr Vidya Niwas Mishra, who was the editor of Navbharat Times and a very respected commentator in Hindi. The book was published by Vaani Prakashan. The book was released in Rashtrapati Bhawan in 1993 and Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, the then President of India received the first copy. All comments made on Acharya Sharma are based on this book which is cited under reference.

@ What is this all about: Acharya Devendra Nath Sharma cleaning the walls of Patna University. It seems rather silly to me.

This is to show how he was for Swachhta, cleanliness decades before it became a movement in India. However if according to your policy it needs to be deleted, please delete it.

--BrianPaes (talk) 13:11, 20 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You can use help:footnotes and use wp:NAMEDREFs to cite the book in multiple locations. If you have ever read a research paper, you should see many citations. That is rather how a good Wikipedia article should look. Please avoid using a single source, if possible.
The article needs to be written for the average English speaker who would not know about swachhta or other Hindu / Indian matters. Swachhta does not even have an article about it, so it would need to be described what it is about. With citation(s)! Perhaps you should start an article? You could create it in your user area: User:BrianPaes/Swachhta would be a logical location. Or see wp:Article for Creation (wp:afc) Jim1138 (talk) 20:25, 20 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You need to use "Save changes" to save all - ping, message, and signature (~~~~) with one Save changes or it may not work. Jim1138 (talk) 21:09, 20 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Jim1138: Kindly review the write up and please help to sort this out at an early convenience. Several references have been quoted and article has been re-formatted. If you want the write up modified in any manner, please advise.

You must sign your talk with four tildes "~~~~" to make a ping work. Both the ping and signature must be saved with one "Save changes" or it will not work. You should always sign your talk anyways otherwise people will not know who wrote the message.
Do you understand why Wikipedia does not allow copying of information from a copyrighted source? A source need not specifically state "copyright" to be considered copyrighted. You need to "use your own words" wp:close paraphrasing is not acceptable either. See wp:biography and wp:Manual of Style for policy on what articles should look like.
A good place to start is: Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Adventure Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 19:45, 23 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
