I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions to List of Hindu temples in the United States have been undone because they appeared to be promotional. please explain how it is promotional, it is simply adding the missing hindu temples from the BAPS sect of Swaminarayan Bugtograph (talk) 16:10, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

MOS:HON

[edit]

Hey @Bugtograph - I reverted your last edit on the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Atlanta. Please refer to MOS:HON, which explains that honorific prefixes, like the ones you have added, should not be included in the text.

RealPharmer3 (talk) 00:01, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree, the stuff added were not honorific prefixes however titles. Exp: Pope Francis, you dont say "Francis" you say "Pope Francis", in the same way saying "Bhagwan" or "Shri" is equivilant to saying "Pope" in the hindu and swaminarayan faiths. Bugtograph (talk) 22:26, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey @Bugtograph -
I think you may be misunderstanding the policy. Please refer to WP:NCIN as well for clarification on naming convention.
This clearly outlines a list of honorifics that should be questioned (the list includes Shri and Bhagwan) and further states, "It is common in devotional texts to precede the name of deities (gods), and sometimes revered individuals with the English term 'lord', the Sanskrit 'sri' or other appellations. These should be omitted in Wikipedia articles and the simple name should be used; e.g. 'Krishna', not 'Sri Krishna', 'Lord Krishna' or other forms."
Additionally, I would like to add that Pope and the words you've inserted dont seem to equivalent. Terms like Bhagwan generally refer to a God and Shri is also an honorific used in Hinduism for deities. But, Wikipedia typically does not include honorifics in running text unless the subject is always referred to in that way in reliable English-language sources - like Pope perhaps, Mother Theresa, or Swami Vivekananda for example.
Hope that helps. RealPharmer3 (talk) 01:47, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Bugtograph I reverted couple of your edits, but seems others have also reverted your other edits. Hindu faiths may be using such prefixes for their supreme deities, monks etc, but it's not encyclopedic. As noted here, reading Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biography#Honorifics will help. Different traditions often uses different honorifics and it gets difficult/confusing to read. e.g. A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada is commonly referred as Srila Prabhupada and that is mostly accepted based on the details in that policy - "Where an honorific is so commonly attached to a name that the name is rarely found in English-language reliable sources without it, it should be included". Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.
