Happy editing! Deb (talk) 18:46, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Probably a good idea for you to read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest as well, just in case. Deb (talk) 18:52, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Deb,

Thank you for responding to what was doubtless a clumsy edit in such a friendly way. I have done what you suggested (ie worked through the tutorial and read the stuff on COI. If you have time, I'd be grateful if you could explain to me what made you post the template message about (paraphrasing) advertorial. Then I could request an edit, or whatever might be appropriate. CSpe4ke (talk) 15:57, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

One of the issues is the inclusion of external links in the text. There is rarely a good reason for this, but there will be times when no one will object. However, when it is a link to a page that invites the reader to buy a particular book or to a non-notable organisation like the Hall Writers' Forum, the creator's intentions are often questionable. Do you actually know Lucy Newlyn outside Wikipedia? It doesn't mean you cannot edit an article about her, but you need to be very very careful, particularly if you are colleagues. Deb (talk) 16:04, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Deb thanks so much for this. I can see exactly what you mean about that external link. I will have a look at the other similar links, if there are any. As I do know Lucy (we are friends) I will request edits, rather than making the edits myself. I of course imagine that I can be impartial, but if I do it that way, it will be safer.

Thanks again. CSpe4ke (talk) 16:11, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, just realised I can't request edits unless it's a different sort of page. Well, I will be very careful. Had some more good advice in the Tearoom x CSpe4ke (talk) 17:24, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

COI[edit]

Given you know Lucy personally, WP:COI applies. You should describe the nature of your connection on your User page. David notMD (talk) 20:03, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

OK I will do that now xCSpe4ke (talk) 21:01, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
