NJ Legislative maps

Hey Chris, I see you're on a break, but I was wondering if you could do new maps for the NJ Legislative districts like the ones you did for 2001? The new maps from the state for numbering have been released here. I have no graphic talents, so if you can't I will look for someone else. Thanks. Hey Jim, I used the shape files here [1] to generate the previous map. There was no graphic talent involved. :) If/when those files are updated, I can try to generate a new SVG. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 21:08, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

I find it more illustrative of the palisades itself, the item of discussion. It better displays the cliffs in thumbnail form, IMO. Yes, this is opinion. If there is a disagreement, we can talk to build consensus on the talk page. As for flowing better, I was referring to the landscape aspect ratio and size of the image in relation to the other surrounding images. I'd also like to bring up another point - I notice that another editor had recently posted an image of Koreatown in Palisades Park, and you nixed it calling it an empty street. I had posted the same thing perhaps a year ago, and you did the same thing, stating the same reason. First of all, that is simply not true about being an empty street - click the picture just once, and you can immediately count about seven or eight Korean businesses. Second of all, the caption I believe was referenced. Third, it may not be as dense as the Manhattan Chinatown, or maybe the picture was taken at mid-morning beween rush hour and lunch hour on a weekday when fewer people are out, or maybe the picture was just captured at the unfortunate second when people and cars were out of view - but none of these things matter, nor do they belie the legitimacy of the Koreatown's existence. I also believe that the image should go up, and to be honest, I find your viewpoint offensive on this particular point.

The primary subject of the photo appears to be the street and sky. It is not for lack of cars that I object, it is the lack of the ability to tell that it is Korean businesses when in thumbnail form (even at 300 or 350px). Even when looking at the image page, it is hard to tell since all of the signs are at oblique angles. I would welcome a better image clearly showing that the signs are using hangul. Compare for example File:Day124ckoreatown.JPG and File:Koreatown manhattan 2009.JPG. Please assume good faith and do not ascribe objectionable reasons for the image's removal without talking to me first. The removal of the image does not indicate that the existence of Koreatown is somehow illegitimate, merely that it is not illustrative. As for the references, two of the three are in the article already. If the "serious eats" reference is important, it should be added to the main text. VTA Map

I noticed you did some modification to the map of the VTA light rail used in several articles. Are you able to edit the names on the map? the Snell and Cottle stations are labeled backwards to their relative positions. BT14 (talk) 00:18, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

Sure, happy to take a look. It is a good start, but some sections are entirely unreferenced. If references were added for each section, that would go a long way toward making it into C-class. Census 2010 template and test

Take a look at Template:USCensusDemographics and User:Alansohn/Absecon, New Jersey. There's some debugging stuff in there now to help me pick up the fields by number, but I think I'm pretty darn close. Looks good, nice work! I verified the fields used matched up with the spreadsheet. I made one tweak in the units labeling for housing unit density. I will play with it. Check out Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey and Haworth, New Jersey where the template has been used as is. The template can use refinement, but the fields seem to match up and are formatted correctly. Thanks for all of your work to get the data downloaded and formatted into a template. Looks good. Thanks for your work in building the template. I was updating River Vale, and noticed that there was also the paragraph in the Geography section which is based on census data. For River Vale, the area as published changed between 2000 and 2010. Rather than manually create/update this as well, I created {{USCensusGeography}}, with the same parameters. Really nice update to Wikipedia:WikiProject New Jersey/Census 2010/Demographics to make it easier to grab data. I messed up the geography template trying to insert a "subst:" parameter but it just drilled down to the details of the decimal template. I also have a separate link for CensusArea to the link at here with the details on area that aren't in the Census2010 links. I've used the templates at North Arlington, New Jersey and Margate City, New Jersey and so far they look great. Again, kudos on getting this done, and getting it done so quickly. Now if we could just populate all of New Jersey we would only have 49 states left to complete. Thanks again! Alansohn (talk) 20:17, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

One problem: I thought I could cheat by calculating number of families based on multiplying the percentage of families by the number of households. It's very close in most cases, but the larger the number the greater the discrepancy. I can't figure out why number of families is in the detailed table for each municipality but we can't find it in any of the state detail lists. Take a look at the DP1 source table for Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey. The census table has 3,186 families, while the template we've created calculates 3,187 families using the percentage of families as the basis. Your reformatting of the 2010 Census location changes at Wikipedia:WikiProject New Jersey/Census 2010 makes the data all the more readable and the new table answers maty of the mysteries raised in your original listing. I still am baffled as to the whole issue of how townships are handled, but we can finesse that for now. As for area, I pulled all the New Jersey places from this file, which has all 2010 places listed (with Townships, but without CDPs, again with no idea why) with revised location data and area for land and water down to the square meter and thousandths of a square mile (three decimal places). I built a spreadsheet that trims all the numbers to three decimal places with a column that I'm playing with to build the geography data. We still have some missing and inconsistent pieces, but most of the puzzle is forming. Thanks again for all of your help. Alansohn (talk) 19:53, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

Regarding townships in census data, I think due to many states calling unincorporated territory "townships", the census treats them different than populated places. To somewhat rectify this, there were co-terminus CDPs for each NJ township in 2000, but they removed the CDPs in 2010. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 17:21, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

		I wanted to thank you for your ingenuity and creativity in discovering the intricacies of the rather inscrutable Census 2000 Factfinder interface, identifying the relevant tables that contain the Census 2010 data needed to match the Census 2000 data loaded in existing place articles, downloading the data and combining it all into a single spreadsheet and building the data that could be used by the USCensusDemographics and USCensusGeography templates to rapidly add the data to articles. Without that chain of steps and efforts this never would have occurred and it is this Brilliant Idea that made this all happen that I hope to recognize and further encourage. I know that real life intrudes into the regularity of your Wikipedia efforts, but your approach here will help make all editors adding data to the New Jersey place articles so much more productive. National Archives ExtravaSCANza
