Berlin Documentary Forum[edit]

Auditorium "Documentary Moments: Memory of The Future", 04.06.2010

The Berlin Documentary Forum (BDF) is a biannual festival conceived to engage with the 'documentary' across a variety of disciplines. In its inaugural edition in 2010, the festival featured five days of thematic programmes, including exhibitions, screenings, performances, readings and discussions developed and realised by a group of international artists and theoreticians. The next festival will take place from 31 May to 04 June 2012 at Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin.

As the distinctions between reality and fiction, artifact and document are challenged today more than ever, the festival engages with the documentary not as a mere picturing of reality but as a strategic way to come to terms with reality by means of working with and through images and narrative. The festival thus seeks to explore new modes of reflection and media education in a world where images play a crucial role in the construction of histories, identities and truth.

Held at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, particular attention is given to the architecture and spatial design of the festival to generate specific settings for different artistic formats and audiences. As an addition to its on-site events, the festival offers an online television programme which captures selected shows and discussions as well as in-depth interviews and reports on the role of the documentary today and its online representation.
