As I have stated in the edit summary, Wikipedia will still use Turkey for the time being, as it is the WP:COMMONNAME - the most recognisable name for the country. -ASHEIOU (THEY/THEM • TALK) 16:54, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Turkey" vs. "Türkiye"[edit]

Hi! I saw you used the name "Türkiye" as the name of the country generally known in English as "Turkey" in your recent edit.

Q: Why don't you use the name Türkiye, the correct name for this country?

A: Because the English-language Wikipedia has a WP:COMMONNAME policy. We use names for countries and places that are the names commonly used for them in English, regardless of what official organizations use. Technically, this kind of name is known as an exonym. For example, we use the name Germany, instead of the native endonym Deutschland.

If or when that general English-language usage changes (as has happened in the past with place names such as Mumbai and Beijing), the same WP:COMMONNAME policy implies that the English-language Wikipedia will necessarily also follow suit. So far, that hasn't happened.

This has been discussed many times, with the same result every time because of the common name policy. If you'd like to discuss this further, please take it up at Talk:Turkey. However, for the reasons given above, there is currently a moratorium on further requests for name changes to the Turkey article until 1 December 2023. — The Anome (talk) 11:00, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The Turkish government has changed the spelling in English to Türkiye instead of its old English spelling, Turkey. I do understand, but this is not only the native spelling, but as of late 2022 it has been the English spelling as well. Dumplings are yummy (talk) 12:11, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia does not go on official names. You'll notice the Wikipedia page for Turkey is still Turkey, and the one for the Ivory Coast is still Ivory Coast. This is because Wikipedia goes off of WP:COMMONNAMEs, the name most people will know a concept by, and that they will use in their day to day conversations. The fact remains that Türkiye is not the common name for Turkey, and until that changes in the reliable sources Wikipedia relies on, we will be sticking with the English name. -Asheiou (they/them • talk) 22:36, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
