Tiran & Sanafir Egyptian

The Egyptian islands of Tiran and Sanafir are located in the Straits of Tiran at the mouth of the Gulf of Aqaba. They were historically considered by Egypt to be part of its Sinai territory, and the Egyptian government maintained a regular presence there for centuries. They were first definitively mentioned in documents from the late 17th century and have changed hands several times over the course of their history.

The islands have been part of the Ottoman Empire, the British Empire and the Sinai Peninsula. The islands were returned to Egypt in 1982 when Prime Minister Menachem Begin and President Anwar Sadat signed a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. Under the terms of the treaty, Egypt and Israel agreed to demilitarize the two islands and granted each country free navigation in the Gulf of Aqaba. Egypt has rejected calls to hand over the Red Sea islands of Tiran and Sanafir to Saudi Arabia. The islands, which are located near the entrance of the Gulf of Aqaba, have been held by Egypt since since the 17th century, and it has long been understood that the islands are part of Egypt’s territory.
