WikiProject Universities Newsletter: Issue VIII (April 2008)

The April 2008 issue of the WikiProject Universities newsletter has been published. You may read the newsletter, change the format in which future issues will be delivered to you, or unsubscribe from this notification by following the link. Thank you for uploading images/media to Wikipedia! There is, however, another Wikimedia Foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In future, please upload media there instead (see m:Help:Unified login). That way, all of the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons (you may view images you have previously uploaded by going to your user contributions on the left and choosing the 'image' namespace from the drop down box). Please note that non-free content, such as images claimed as fair use, cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. Help us spread the word about Commons by informing other users, and please continue uploading!--OsamaK 13:26, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Oxford College Infobox

I wouldn't personally object to adding visitors to the infoboxes. Though they're of little day-to-day relevance, and half the students probably couldn't tell you who their Visitor was, they're an important part of how a college is legally constituted and can probably still make a big difference in some sort of rare crisis! If you do go ahead with it, make sure the entry in the infobox is (i) hidden away in the middle somewhere unobtrusive (after the principal or equivalent?) (ii) optional, for those cases where no value is given (yet) and (iii) linked to the Visitor article for anyone who doesn't know what the term means.

Oh, and here's one for the collection: the Visitor of Jesus is the Earl of Pembroke. He's probably younger than the average, leading undergrads to speculate whose side he might take in any dispute they might have with the college.... —Casper Gutman (talkcontributions) 13:57, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

...though of course Visitors' powers to mediate in disputes between colleges and their students were removed the year after WH became Earl of Pembroke. It's a conspiracy I tell you! —Casper Gutman (talkcontributions) 10:38, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Thumbnail size

Greetings. A couple of minor points. I understand that it is Wiki policy to leave the picture size unspecified as this allows users to set the size they prefer in their user preferences. You do not need to put "right" as that is the default position.--Charles (talk) 19:34, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Just a friendly heads-up but that peerage titles are a complex area and you can't take paper reports at face value. Official sources are far more preferable. The title was correct as was and has been reverted. AllsoulsDay (talk) 17:40, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Merging

I left a note answering your question on the helpdesk. In short: merges are supposed to be completed with a Wikipedia:Redirect (see WP:MERGE too). If reading the help file doesn't help, feel free to ask me for more info. - Mgm|(talk) 12:14, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Pretty please!

You are an experienced editor and should know better -- please use edit summaries! – ukexpat (talk) 17:11, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

I would like to second the remark by Ukexpat. Edit summaries are a very important part of any edit. I had an editor once point it out to me and now I believe that every edit, regardless of how small, deserves an edit summary; if for no other reason than to make it easier for other editors to follow the sequence of edits and to minimize the need to review every edit. Thank you for your participation in Wikipedia Dbiel (Talk) 19:20, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Baronets

Hi ... per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (names and titles)#British peerage, item 4, articles about baronets go always either with the form Dick Tracy or Sir Dick Tracy, 99th Baronet, but in no case with Dick Tracy, 99th Baronet. Please take care of this in future. Regards

Rollback

I have Ferrari/Archive 1 granted rollback rights to your account; the reason for this is that after a review of some of your contributions, I believe I can trust you to use rollback correctly by using it for its intended usage of reverting vandalism, and that you will not abuse it by reverting good-faith edits or to revert-war. For information on rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback and Wikipedia:Rollback feature. If you do not want rollback, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Good luck and thanks. –Juliancolton | Talk 19:49, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Wikilinking

Hi, and thanks for your work on the English Wikipedia.

I noticed an article you worked on. Just a short note to point out that we don’t normally link:

  • dates
  • years
  • commonly known geographical terms (including well-known country-names), and
  • common terms you’d look up in a dictionary (unless significantly technical).

(This even applies for infoboxes.)

Thanks and my best wishes.

The Civility Barnstar
I have opposed almost all of your proposed AFDs on peers not in the House of Lords, a few baronets, and so forth, but it has struck me that you have been remarkably civil in dealing with keen disagreement! Moonraker (talk) 19:52, 9 March 2014 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:University of Kurdistan Hewler logo.jpg

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:University of Kurdistan Hewler logo.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 18:54, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

Notice

The article Princess Anna of Bavaria has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Deposed monarchy cruft.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
