WBFAN

[edit]

Hi - I noticed this edit to Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by featured article nominations. Like the comment says, the list is automatically generated from other source material and it shouldn't be manually edited. If you want to add Tim Vickers as a nominator for Immune system please edit the relevant entry at Wikipedia:Featured articles nominated in 2007 (according to my reading of the nomination log, he didn't actually nominate it although helping rewrite it could plausibly count). Similarly, if you want him listed as the nominator for Tuberculosis please edit Wikipedia:Featured articles nominated in 2003. This one is far enough back that it's not clear to me who should get "credit" for the nomination (it was added to what was wikipedia:Brilliant prose at the time by this edit from user:CYD).

Just FYI - the stars at WP:WBFAN do not reflect authorship, but the act of taking an article through the WP:FA process. In many cases, the same person who was the "primary" author nominates an article and takes it through the WP:FA process but this is far from always true. If you'd like to discuss this with a wider audience, I think Wikipedia talk:List of Wikipedians by featured article nominations is probably the right place. -- Rick Block (talk) 22:40, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's not really about credit. It's about encouraging folks to get more articles to featured status. Writing counts. Editing counts. But the only thing that really matters is getting more articles through the FA process. -- Rick Block (talk) 04:03, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
BTW - if you feel strongly about contributions to a particular article, please feel free to add "co-nominators" in the by-year lists. Several articles have been co-nominated. Like I say above, the nomination history of Immune system certainly shows involvement from Tim Vickers. I suspect without his help, the article would not have passed FA. I don't think any reasonable person would object to listing him as a co-nominator. There is certainly no intent to snub anyone. -- Rick Block (talk) 04:22, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Nice to see you

[edit]

It's great meeting someone who apparently (I'm judging by your edits and user name) loves LOTR as much as I do. I haven't edited many LOTR related articles in the past, but I'm hoping to change that eventually. Listen, if you ever need anything or have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page—I don't know everything about Wikipedia *sighs disappointedly,* but I can try to help.  :) Arwen Undomiel talk 06:15, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Grrr. It would appear as though you just stumbled upon one of my greatest sources of confusion on Wikipedia. Quite frankly, I know firsthand the confusion you're going through, and believe me when I say it's not just problematic for a new editor like you. I don't know how well I can answer this question, but I shall try. Ok, here goes, and I'm really hoping my explanation doesn't get too lengthy.
According to the Manual of Style, we know that biographies, etc. should be written in an out-of-universe perspective. A featured article about a character (see Padmé Amidala, Palpatine, or Jabba the Hutt) usually has a section(s) describing their appearances and role in the films, and their characterization. Usually, this section would be written in present tense, but per the discussion you showed me here, I might write this portion of a LOTR character's article in past tense. Featured articles about fictional characters also have a section(s) about concept and creation (how the director/actor decided to portray the character, costumes, make-up, etc.), and the character's role in popular culture and/or how well critics like their acting (occasionally—some articles don't have this section). Personally, I would write this portion as they did in Palpatine's article—generally past tense. Apart from this, I would generally follow the out-of-universe style given here. Of course, you could just throw all of this out the window and write it in present tense.  :)
Wow, that was a very vague and generally non-committal answer. In fact, there's a very good chance that my "answer" is entirely incorrect. Quite frankly, I really disagree with this portion of the MoS and find it confusing. Trust me, I'm attempting to rewrite a few Star Wars characters' articles, and I am finding it relatively challenging because of this. You would think, given that Star Wars took place "a long time ago," I would be allowed to write in past tense, but no, of course I'm not. Grrr. *glares intently at the computer while seething silently* Anyway, I know that wasn't much of an answer, and I really am sorry about that. Arwen Undomiel talk 16:48, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Galadrial edits

[edit]

Hello, Galadree-el. My apologies, I didn't mean to undo your reorganisation, just the tenses. By all means, restore the reorganisation. :) Psyche825 19:33, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Actually, after looking through a few things, I saw this: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Middle-earth/Standards#Character. Maybe you should re-reorganise the article to follow that. Psyche825 22:30, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Signature

[edit]

Welcome back! Sorry, I meant to reply sooner, but I didn't get your message until 2:00 am, and I good barely string three words together to form a coherent thought. I'd be happy to help you with you signature, though I have to give you the standard warning—results are not guaranteed. If you want, I could try to design it for you so all you have to do is save it under "my preferences". I have a list of things you need to choose if this is the case.

 • What do you actually want your signature to look like? Do you want it to look like mine where your entire name links to your (currently nonexistent) userpage and have a little superscript "talk" link to your talk page? Do you want "Galadree" to link to said userpage and "-el" link to your talk page? Do you want your entire signature to just link to your talk page?
 • Colors. You could have your entire signature be one color, you could have two colors like mine, or could come up with your own color scheme. If you want your signature to be colorful, first go to this page. Pick two (or however many) colors you like that go together and give me the hex triplet for said colors. It should be the number right next to the color sample and will look something like #6495ED or #0BDA51 (this number is unique for each color).
 • Fonts. You could have your signature stay in the default font, or you could pick your own as I did. The easiest way to do this might be be to open a Microsoft Word document and pick some fonts or you could probably find a list of fonts somewhere on the internet. Pick a couple and rate them in the order you like them (I say this because not every font works well on Wikipedia and I'd like to have a backup plan if your favorite doesn't work).

All right. Look through these things, and let me know what you decide. Arwen Undomiel talk 17:47, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

All right, I have the basic structure for your signature here. Galadree-el. I couldn't get any of the fonts save the last one to show up on Wikipedia, but I managed to get both colors in. If you like it, highlight and copy this bit of code
<font face="Lucida Handwriting"><b><font color="#CD853F">Galad</font><font color="#D2691E">ree-el</font></b></font>
Now, go to "my preferences" (should be up near the top of your screen) and paste the code into the box that says "signature:". Once you've done that, make sure you check the box underneath that says "raw signature", then go down to the bottom and click "save". If you want to edit anything about it (really, feel free to, I'm not sure you'll like it), I'm going to give you the basic instructions so you can go to the sandbox and play around with it.
 • If you want to change the fonts, type a new font in the bold area (remember, a lot of fonts don't work on Wikipedia, hence the reason I'm directing you to the sandbox)
<font face="Lucida Handwriting"><b><font color="#CD853F">Galad</font><font color="#D2691E">ree-el</font></b></font>
 • If you wanted to leave your signature in the default font, delete the bold areas
<font face="Lucida Handwriting"><b><font color="#CD853F">Galad</font><font color="#D2691E">ree-el</font></b></font>
 • Your signature is currently bolded. If you change fonts and it now doesn't look good bold, remove these bits
<font face="Lucida Handwriting"><b><font color="#CD853F">Galad</font><font color="#D2691E">ree-el</font></b>
 • If you change fonts, and your signature is now either too big or too small, you can add this (you need to put a number such as 2.5, 3, 4 etc. where I have an underscore __ )
<font face="Lucida Handwriting" size="__"><b><font color="#CD853F">Galad</font></b><b><font color="#D2691E">ree-el</font></b></font>
 • If you want to edit the colors, type a new hex triplet into the either of the bold areas
<font face="Lucida Handwriting"><b><font color="#CD853F">Galad</font><font color="#D2691E">ree-el</font></b></font>
 • If you decide to make a userpage and you wanted to link "Galad" to your userpage and link "ree-el" to your talk page, here's what the code would probably look like (provided you didn't change colors or anything)
<font face="Lucida Handwriting"><b><font color="#CD853F">Galad</font></b><b><font color="#D2691E">ree-el</font></b></font>
Sorry about all this confusion. Feel free to ask me about any questions. Arwen Undomiel talk 16:42, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I do like your new signature, especially the way the colors you chose fade into each other. Whatever font you chose doesn't show up on my computer, but then again, my laptop likes to do strange things. It's nice. Great job! Arwen Undomiel talk 21:31, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ooops, I'm sorry this is such a late reply. I've completely neglected Wikipedia for the last couple days. What I meant was that—to me, anyway—your font appears to be a slightly larger version of the normal, everyday, standard writing font on Wikipedia. There might be a some people who can see your font, though this is purely speculation. For example (and it's a rather poor one), some computers show Chinese characters, some don't. Mine doesn't. You might want to ask another user if their computer shows the Moonbeam font before you change it. It really might just be my problem. Arwen Undomiel talk 03:14, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Noldor House userboxes

[edit]

Thanks for using one of the LOTR Noldor House userboxes I came up with. I admit they're kind of amateur, but it got the ball rolling :) (Of course, I do serve the ruthlessly goal-oriented House Feanor and not the peacenik Finarfins: dude, we came to Middle-earth to *get the Silmarils*, not establish our own peaceful kingdoms and drop out of the fight! But I digress...) I'm not sure how better to advertise those things. It's just that I was talking with a friend, and trying to explain the difference between the Houses, and they said the Harry Potter houses were cool and I said that LOTR had trait-oriented Houses too sort of. That is, Fingolfin = Gryffindor (noble), Feanor = Slytherin (ruthless and cunning), Finarfin = Hufflepuff (peaceful), and the Ravenclaws....actually have no direct equivalent. I guess the Sindar get stuck with that. Well have fun. --Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici 20:56, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello :) I just thought I'd say thanks for creating the Tolkien Gateway infobox, it made my day. As much as I love TG I think at this point it is best to leave links to it as normal external links, I've gone ahead and modified the template for that. I also think I'm going to remove the template from a few articles where the TG article isn't a lot better than the Wikipedia article. I really appreciate your effort, thanks! --Hyarion 14:50, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. Tolkien Gateway is an excellent project. If only I had more free time to join you there. Galadree-el 05:30, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Lothlorien.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Lothlorien.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 20:53, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

These merges have been discussed and are the current consensus of WP:PCP. Please do not continue to revert the pages.—Loveはドコ? (talkcontribs) 05:26, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see no consensus in the discussion. Stop reverting and merging articles based on a disputed guideline until the general consensus from the centralized debate is attained. Galadree-el 05:29, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The discussion was WAY before the Television episodes RFC - it took place last year. Please look at WT:PCP's archives. -Jéské (Blah v^_^v) 05:37, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
