Speedy deletion nomination of User:Haim Dotan
[edit]A tag has been placed on User:Haim Dotan requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section U5 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to consist of writings, information, discussions, and/or activities not closely related to Wikipedia's goals. Please note that Wikipedia is not a free Web hosting service. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Contested deletion
[edit]This page should not be speedily deleted because... (your reason here) --Haim Dotan (talk) 13:50, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
I am editing the page for the first time.
Wikipedia is not for writing about yourself
[edit]Welcome to Wikipedia, but it is not a place like Facebook or LinkedIn for people to write about themselves or post their CVs. It is a quite different sort of site, a project to build an encyclopedia, so it is selective about subjects for articles, and writing about oneself is strongly discouraged, for reasons explained at Wikipedia is not about YOU and Wikipedia:Autobiography.
Wikipedia user pages are not like those at social-networking sites. Their use is explained at WP:NOTWEBHOST:
"Wikipedians have their own user pages, but they should be used primarily to present information relevant to working on the encyclopedia. Limited biographical information is allowed, but user pages should not function as personal webpages or be repositories for large amounts of material that is irrelevant to collaborating on Wikipedia. If you are looking to make a personal webpage or blog or to post your résumé, please make use of one of the many free providers on the Internet or any hosting included with your Internet account."
The links in the Welcome message at the top of this page will tell you more about Wikipedia. JohnCD (talk) 14:21, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

[edit]First, as you are not Haim Dotan, you should not have an account in his name. Before you do anything else, please go to Wikipedia:Changing username and request a new username. It may be based on your real name, or not, as you choose (see WP:REALNAME for some considerations), but it should not be the name of any other living person or of any group or organization. Wikipedia accounts are for individuals only, who are personally responsible for them.
Yes, you may submit an article for Haim Dotan, but a userpage is not the place to do it. Since you work for him, you have a Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, and should read that page and the Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide. You will see that you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's Terms of Use ("Paid contributions without disclosure" under section 4) to disclose your interest in any edits for which you expect remuneration, either directly or as part of your employment. You can do that by a statement on your user page, on the lines of "I am employed by Haim Dotan Architects and I am editing Wikipedia on their behalf".
You will also see that you should not edit directly about him, but may submit a draft via WP:Articles for creation for review by an uninvolved user. Read WP:Your first article and WP:Verifiability for advice, and make sure to write in a neutral tone and to cite reliable sources for what the article says.
Although this is not Mr Haim directly writing about himself, since you are writing on his behalf it is, in a sense, Wikipedia:Autobiography, and you should read that page. In particular, understand that a Wikipedia article is not "owned" by anyone, not its first author and least of all its subject. Others can and will edit the article, and you will not be able to insist on your preferred version.
Understand also that Wikipedia is not a social-networking site like LinkedIn or Facebook, and an encyclopedia article is not a place for its subject to tell the world about himself. What you wrote read like a "manifesto", the sort of thing that might go on Mr Haim's website or his LinkedIn page, listing all of his achievements, every lecture he has given, every conference he has attended... That is more detail than the general encyclopedia reader wants - the article can link to Mr Haim's website for those who want more. There is good advice for people in your situation at User:Uncle G/On notability#Writing about subjects close to you:
"When writing about subjects that are close to you, don't use your own personal knowledge of the subject, and don't cite yourself, your web site, or the subject's web site. Instead, use what is written about the subject by other people, independently, as your sources. Cite those sources in your very first edit. If you don't have such sources, don't write."
Take care to write in a neutral tone, avoiding "peacock terms" like "distinguished", "innovative" and "cutting-edge", and to cite sources for all important claims. Don't copy from existing sites like his website - we cannot accept copied text without a formal copyright release from the actual copyright holder (see WP:Donating copyrighted materials). Assertion of permission is not enough, and in any case material written for other purposes is likely to have a promotional tone unsuitable for an encyclopedia.
If you want a copy of what you wrote, I will be happy to email it to you on request. JohnCD (talk) 15:34, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
- I have now looked (with the aid of Google Translate) at the Hebrew Wikipedia article he:חיים_דותן and I think that would be a good starting point for your draft. If you translate from that, you need to put the template {{Translated page}} on the talk page of you draft, in order to give attribution to the contributors to the Hebrew article. [edit]If you are the person represented by this username, please note that the practice of blocking such usernames is to protect you from being impersonated, not to discourage you from editing Wikipedia. You may choose to edit under a new username (see information below), but keep in mind that you are welcome to continue to edit under this username. If you choose to do so, we ask the following:
- Please be willing and able to prove your identity to Wikipedia.
- Please send an e-mail to info-enwikimedia.org. Be aware that the volunteer response team that handles e-mail is indeed operated entirely by volunteers, and the reply may not be immediate.
If you are not the person represented by this username, you are welcome to choose a new username (see below).
A username should not be promotional, related to a "real-world" group or organization, misleading, offensive, or disruptive. Also, usernames may not end in the word "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account.
You are encouraged to choose a new account name that meets our policy guidelines and create the account yourself. Alternatively, if you have already made edits and you wish to keep your existing contributions under a new name, then you may request a change in username by:
- Adding
{{unblock-un|your new username here}}
on your user talk page. You should be able to do this even though you are blocked, as you can usually still edit your own talk page. If not, you may wish to contact the blocking administrator by clicking on "E-mail this user" on their talk page. - At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
- Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names. The account is created upon acceptance, thus do not try to create the new account before making the request for a name change. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.
- Adding
{{unblock|Your reason here}}
, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. -- samtar talk or stalk 15:18, 7 December 2016 (UTC)
