- I added some images that I thought were as good or better than those currently posted and I'm at a loss for why they were removed. MANY, MANY astronomy topics have gallery images. What gives? Am I to assume that I shouldn't post any gallery images? I posted some a while back and had no problems. HayHouse (talk) 01:26, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- For example, here's one I posted a year or so ago. Do you need to remove this one too??

- Wikipedia is not a place for astrophotographers to simply post their images because Wikipedia is not an image host and Galleries are not an indiscriminate collection of images. Images have to have context i.e. something is described in the article and an image goes along with it to illustrate what that is. Articles should also not contain redundant images, if you think a poorer quality needs replacing then replace it. Fountains of Bryn Mawr (talk) 02:09, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- Based on your last comments and some looking at a number of sites is "Gallery" something that Wiki is phasing out? You seem to indicate that images should be referenced in and appear in the text, which seems distinct from the role of "Gallery" images. If you don't want people to post in galleries, maybe that option should go away? It was NEVER my intention to use Wiki as an image host. I have other sites for that. I didn't post "indiscriminately" and I thought I was adding to content on the few sites where I posted. Is it OK to post references to other images in "External Links?" Just trying to get a better understanding. Thanks. HayHouse (talk) 22:15, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- What goes in a gallery is covered by WP:IG and images in general at MOS:IMAGES.
- "indiscriminately" would be "well, its another image of the same thing and there is no text anywhere telling the reader why there is another image of the same thing". The purpose of an image is to increase readers' understanding of the article's subject matter. A duplicate image or a series of images in a gallery with no encyclopedic description doesn't do that. An example of turning an indiscriminate into a useful gallery labeled "Facilities" would be this. Fountains of Bryn Mawr (talk) 03:11, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
