WP:CITEKILL actually hurts more than helps, for two reasons. First, it makes it more difficult for reviewers to wade through all the crap citations and find any good ones; and second, it makes it look like the person really isn't notable, and the editor is throwing everything up against the wall to try to make them appear so. The vast majority of the citations used are non-independent (meaning the reference has some connection to the subject of the article). The overwhelming majority of the rest appear to be either simple or trivial mentions, or what are known as WP:ROUTINE.
