Getting Started

[edit]

Hey guys, just wanted to make the first post and let everyone know that I'll be on here pretty often to check for updates from you. Our first task at hand is to come up with an idea that we can use for our project. I recommend checking into things that you may be interested personally, and also topics that we touched on in class. Let's try to do something a little more out-there than just editing a page about a book, etc. I hope we find an awesome topic that people will really enjoy reading!

Good luck all, just post your ideas as they roll out!

Idea: National Register of Historic Places

[edit]

Here is a link to Wikipedia's page on the National Register of Historic Places -> Delaware County, Indiana. Might be interesting to see if we can dig up some research on any of these sites that don't have a Wiki page yet?

Masonic Temple

[edit]

Hey guys, I have a lot of information about my topic and have input some good stuff into my user page for now. I have run into a couple of problems, and maybe you guys have some answers.

1. I got a message about my the pics I uploaded having no sources. So I had them cited in my references page, is that all I need to do to avoid a quick delete? I got a flag on my pictures that said they will be removed on April 12. I cited the pictures but there must be something else I need to do, however I am not sure. If I could get some advice that would be great, have a good weekend guys.Page graham (talk) 21:04, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hope everything is going good as far as editing for you guys. Sorry I took so long to post, there was just a lot of info. Page graham (talk) 02:29, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I should be posting a picture of the exterior today. Page graham (talk) 18:28, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that Kyle has posted his page to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masonic_Temple_%28Muncie,_Indiana%29#Historical_Significance. I made a few very minor changes, and formatted the quote as a blockquote, so it doesn't overlap the map now. Your article looks great.Lbowman1 (talk) 21:19, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help with formatting. I got my pictures to work right, but I definitely needed some help with my quote from the Ball brother.Page graham (talk) 15:47, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Topic

[edit]

Thanks for acting as our pathfinder! Your idea about National Historic Sites sounds interesting. Lbowman1 (talk) 19:18, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The National Historic Sites sound good too. Lmvesperry (talk) 19:44, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Have we decided when we are meeting to discuss the outline of our project? Sometime tonight would be fine, I have a break in between classes from 1230 to 2 and anytime after that is good. Let me know, I will be checking the talk page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Page graham (talkcontribs) 22:58, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ideas

[edit]

I like the idea of the National Historic Register in Delaware county...it could definitely provide us with many possibilities.

Wikipedia Ambassador Program

[edit]

Hi Jacob, I happened to drop on over and check out your user page. Were you aware that Wikipedia has an outreach program specifically designed to assist professors and students that wish to incorporate Wikipedia into their course curriculum? I serve the Wikipedia community as an Online Ambassador and would like to invite you to consider becoming involved in the Ambassador Program. If you are interested, sign up on the program page (instructions are provided) or contact the Campus Team Coordinator, Annie Lin, for more information: alin [at] wikimedia [dot] org. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Best regards, Cind.amuse 21:38, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Talk pages

[edit]

On another note, user talk pages are designed for editors to discuss the status and improvements or problems to an article or other Wikipedia page. Oftentimes, automatic messages may show up on this page unexpectedly, with conversations taking place between various editors. For that reason, I would like to recommend that you move your project communication page to a subpage of your user space. For example, you can click on this red link and paste the content in the new editing window that opens up. Then leave a link to the page on your user page. The Ambassador Program will also provide guidance in creating a course page, as well as work to provide a Campus Ambassador and Online Ambassador to assist you in working with Wikipedia. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Best regards, Cind.amuse 08:00, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Laura's page

Jacob and crew, I've created my stub. Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Lbowman1/West_Washington_Street_Bridge. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lbowman1 (talkcontribs) 17:17, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

One hour later...I just received a "barnstar" from Guerillero! First I received cookies from Jay, now a barnstar...I wonder what will arrive next? (see my usertalk page)Lbowman1 (talk) 17:42, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I also have a message from Guerillero saying we could be featured on the main page in the ...Did you know section. I'll work on that.Lbowman1 (talk) 17:42, 4 April 2011 (UTC) Lbowman1 (talk) 21:55, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Guerillero just nominated http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Washington_Street_Bridge_%28Muncie,_Indiana%29 to the DYK. The nomination is near the bottom of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template_talk:Did_you_know#West_Washington_Street_Bridge_.28Muncie.2C_Indiana page. Thanks Guerillero!Lbowman1 (talk) 00:20, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Emily's Page

[edit]

I've created my stub as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Emily.wood17/Beech_Grove_Cemetery . Feel free to make any changes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emily.wood17 (talkcontribs) 21:47, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Emily, I made a few mechanical changes to your page based on CMS/MLA style (mainly capitalization of titles without names). I also added line breaks in the Burial section for aesthetics. The hyphens used to specify ranges in dates should actually be en dashes, but I don't know how to insert an en dash in Wikipedia. Does anyone know how to do this? Let me know if you disagree with any of my changes.Lbowman1 (talk) 16:40, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I figured out how to insert an en dash. There's a toolbar at the bottom of the Edit page (below the Save Page button).Lbowman1 (talk) 17:57, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Lindsey's Page

[edit]

Hi everyone. Here's a link to my stub in case you didn't get it in the email. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Lmvesperry/Emily_Kimbrough_Historic_DistrictLmvesperry (talk) 17:55, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Lindsey, I think the red links at the bottom of your page indicate that there is no active link on Wikipedia. If you remove the double brackets, the text will change from red to black. (Of course, if it is okay to leave them red, please disregard. Jacob, do you know which is preferred?)Lbowman1 (talk) 16:02, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I just found out that the red links are okay to leave as-is. I had a Wikipedia editor add some info and links to my article. He added text with links that don't exist yet, so I guess that's okay. Thanks.Lbowman1 (talk) 19:59, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Next Step

[edit]

Hi Jacob. Now that Emily, Lindsey, and I have our pages complete, how do we proceed? Do we need to do anything else with our own pages before class on Tuesday, or will you be compiling them as one article? Please let us know what we can do to finalize this project.Lbowman1 (talk) 16:49, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, the Next step.

[edit]

Sorry guys, I have a 10 page paper due tomorrow also, so I'm having trouble getting all of this done. What you need to do is go here:

Laura: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Washington_Street_Bridge_%28Muncie,_IN%29

Lindsey: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emily_Kimbrough_Historic_District_%28Muncie,_IN%29

Emily: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beech_Grove_Cemetery_%28Muncie,_IN%29

Once you get there, click "Start the __article name__ article". From here, if there is absolutely nothing on the page already, I believe you can just go ahead and copy everything from your draft page's edit page and paste it into the new one. If there is already something on the page then you may want to consider keeping it on there. Once you get the new page up and running you may want to write on the "talk" page of the new article (not sure what to say... just something about adding information).

Also, post a link (the ones above) here in a new section after the article you are doing is up and running so that I can link them to the category page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:National_Register_of_Historic_Places_in_Muncie,_Indiana. Jfenleybsu (talk) 18:17, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Up-and-Running Articles

[edit]

I've copied my info from my stub page to the official page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Washington_Street_Bridge_%28Muncie,_IN%29 Lbowman1 (talk) 18:35, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Jacob, I was also going to go back to the National Register of Historic Places for Delaware County (the page you linked to when we began the project) and complete the link from there. However, that link goes to "West Washington Street Bridge (Muncie, Indiana)" and your link goes to "West Washington Street Bridge (Muncie, IN)." Is this duplication okay?Lbowman1 (talk) 18:41, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Actually, if we want to go onto the National Register page for Delaware county and edit the page to match yours then we should be okay to do that. I might try it really quick. Wait and see if it changes. Jfenleybsu (talk) 18:53, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Jacob, I just got a message from Nyttend (see my talk page). He "redirected" the "Muncie, IN" page to the "Muncie, Indiana" page, so we're all set. I checked the link on the National Register page, and it is now blue and takes you to the page I created. Thx.Lbowman1 (talk) 19:28, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that was very nice of him. I received another message from him. See my page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:West_Washington_Street_Bridge_%28Muncie,_Indiana%29. He is at IU Bloomington and is part of a group that works on historical information.Lbowman1 (talk) 19:58, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Two Stubs

[edit]

OK i made two:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:AnnaKalk/GraceKeiserMaringLibrary and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:AnnaKalk/CarnegieLibraryMuncie. I'm having trouble making my references look like references should, and I also don't know where to go from here...can anyone help? AnnaKalk (talk) 19:00, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

W. W. Shirk

[edit]

I went ahead and uploaded my finished article to wikipedia instead of my user page because i was afraid i wouldn't have time to edit and post later. You can edit anything you find wrong there: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._W._Shirk_Building_%28Muncie,_Indiana%29 Jfenleybsu (talk) 20:32, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Putting Up My Page

[edit]

I tried coping and pasting my edited page for the Beech Grove Cemetery to the new link you posted for us to post the links on and for some reason it is not letting me do this? If you could actually email or text me that would be a much faster way of communication before class tomorrow. My email is erwood@bsu.edu. Thanks! And thank you Laura for editing my page, it is greatly appreciated :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emily.wood17 (talkcontribs) 03:14, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the link to the page Jacob wanted our stuff copy and pasted to. I have been unable for some reason to get this where it should be. If anyone could put this where Jacob wants it I would GREATLY appreciate it. Thank You. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beech_Grove_Cemetery_%28Muncie,_IN%29 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emily.wood17 (talkcontribs) 03:18, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I tried putting it there multiple times, but I guess it worked and just didn't show up? Sorry I'm not in class today I had a Doctors appt. Anything else I need to do or anything important I missed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emily.wood17 (talkcontribs) 20:30, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

My page is officially up! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emily_Kimbrough_Historic_DistrictLmvesperry (talk) 00:29, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I also added a photo to the Emily Kimbrough Historic District Section of the National Historic Places Page in the little box next to the link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Delaware_County,_Indiana — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lmvesperry (talkcontribs) 00:39, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Final Cleanup of All Articles

[edit]

Jacob, I noticed that Lindsey's page is the only one without "(Muncie, Indiana)" as part of the article title. It looks like someone deleted that blank page that you created. Is there a way to get Lindsey's page to link from the National Register of Historic Pages (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Delaware_County,_Indiana)? The Beech Grove Cemetery link is still red on that page, too.

We've also had another editor join us now that Kyle's page is up. He/she added the map of Indiana to the Masonic Temple page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masonic_Temple_%28Muncie,_Indiana%29). It would be wonderful if the editors could do the same for the other articles from our group.

Your original idea of updating the National Register of Historic Places (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Delaware_County,_Indiana) has ended up with some great articles being produced. Kudos to you for that—and for acting as our pathfinder. Great job!Lbowman1 (talk) 21:59, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Laura, I also noticed that the link to my page doesn't include Muncie, Indiana. Not sure what I could do about that or how it would effect the project.Lmvesperry (talk) 23:47, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm going to work tonight on getting them up tonight and possibly trying to learn how to add the map to the pages myself. As long as the links are blue and go to the right page then they should be fine! Some of them don't say (Muncie, Indiana) but still work fine.Jfenleybsu (talk) 00:59, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
