National varieties of English

Information icon In a recent edit to the page Silver (color), you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.

For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to India, use Indian English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the original author used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. How do I answer this ?

You don’t need to answer it. The note above is only meant to be advice, about our policies and guidelines on language. In particular the one here: Wikipedia:Manual of Style#National varieties of English. That says that we do not prefer one or other variety of English. Because writers of Wikipedia come from all over the English speaking world, the varieties they use vary. And once an article is written with one variety of English, such as American English or British English, it should not be changed. The only exceptions are articles on topics associated with a country. British or American people, landmarks, or institutions. Such articles with strong ties to a country should be written in the variety of English associated with that country. Otherwise the variety of English should not be changed.   • 1. You need to respect the boundaries of other people's user pages. Stay off my talk page if you can't.
  • 2. Learn how to WP:PING if you want people to respond to your talk page.
  • 3. Posting bracketed in-line comments with question marks is inappropriate for an encyclopaedia. This is a rather basic concept you should be aware of if you wish to contribute. As you have already received level 1 and level 2 notifications, you were given a level 3. These notifications contain links to various policies that you should read and if you're receiving multiple warnings, then you should be taking the time to familiarize yourself with Wikipedia's guidelines before making any further changes to any more articles. If you're changes are disruptive, they only serve to create work for others who must clean up after you. - theWOLFchild 06:04, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • If the article uses "color", it is best not to change it to colour. If you want to, discuss it at talk.
  • If you are reverted, please do not revert again. Instead, talk about it at the article talk page.
  • The heading in sections you post can be about what your are posting, not actually the message itself repeated. See article talk posts.
  • Inspect other people's edits and view how talk pages go to see how to do it yourself.
  • If there is a content dispute, please discuss it at article talk rather than an editor's talk.
  • To notify someone of a discussion, please use a ping template like {{reply to|Anna Frodesiak}} or simply type their name somewhere in the talk page message like this: [[User:Anna Frodesiak]].

"revert" = what here ?

The messaging I think I now get, but if you employ such a bizarre system it really needs to be explained ( as simply as poss, as you did ) in a link or footer with messages from editors/moderators to people who have no idea how to respond. How about a right click option "reply" ?

How do you message people whose idea of professional is to use some kind of logo ? eg .--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds and theWOLFchild ( this is not how their "names" actually look )

When your editors/moderators message people if would be most intelligent to say exactly what the problem is rather than prattling on at length about "disruptive" edits without actually explaining, eg theWOLFchild and w/e I did to "The Flying Squad", Could you find out what it was for me please.

The notices you are receiving are pre-fabricated templates. Usually those on the receiving end go and look at the reverted edit they made on the page noted in the message and are able to figure out the problem on their own. But failing that, they can ask for an explanation, like you did, and they are usually provided with one, like I did - see above. Mmkay? - theWOLFchild 05:21, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]


Yes, the ping worked and it was good! :)
Reverting: WP:3RR and WP:BRD. The bottom line is, if there's a back and forth "undo" thing going on, it is best to stop and use article talk.
Messaging: It's a fairly simple system. You just have to click "edit" and stick your response below what that person wrote.
Usernames and their appearances, yes, I know how you feel. I like to see them match. Some people have one appearance and a totally different username. The two you cite seem okay.
As for the color/colour matter, please read WP:STYLEVAR. If others object to changes, it is always best to get consensus at article talk. If your case is strong, that should be easy.
Prattling on: Yes, those were boilerplate, standardized messages. Anyone can send them. You can too. As for finding out what it was and having it explained, please read it again. It is pretty clear.
